Join us as we devour Hungarian food at our favorite restaurant (Kék Rózsa Étterem - The Blue Rose Restaurant) in Budapest, Hungary sampling Goulash and some of our other favorite dishes including appetizers, mains, wine and dessert. Typical Hungarian cuisine is often hearty meals and this meal in particular really fit the stereotype as it was heavy in carbs and potatoes featuring rich meats, local wines and decadent dessert. All in all this is what we had for our lunch in Budapest, Hungary:
1) Goulash - Gulyás (Hungarian traditional soup)
2) Villány Kuvi (local dry red wine - also try Egri Bikaver)
3) Local bread basket
4) Lángos (Potato scone pancake)
5) Pörkölt (Hungarian beef stew with potatoes)
6) Somlo - Somlói Galuska (sponge cake with ice cream)

Hungarian Food - Eating Goulash and our favorite Hungarian cuisine in Budapest, Hungary Travel Food Video Transcript:
Well hello from Budapest and welcome to yet another delicious food video. Today we're going to be trying Hungarian food and if there is one dish you can't miss it is Goulash (gulyás). So we have ordered one goulash (gulyás) but we've also ordered a beef stew to go along with that because apparently the goulash is more soupy. So we're going to be comparing those two dishes, the red wine is already here. So cheers. And let's wait for the food to arrive.
Okay, so we're starting off with a dry red. This is called a Villány Kuvi and apologies in advance for butchering Hungarian names.
So apparently the word Goulash it used to mean herdsmen so this is a dish that used to be prepared by the herdsmen and now it is kind of like the national dish. You find goulash (gulyás) at almost every single restaurant. Yeah. So let's dig right in.
And this looks amazing.
Okay,, so we ordered a little appetizer. I believe this is called Lángos. And it is basically a potato scone with garlic. So I'm just going to bite right in.
Hungarian potato scone pancakes (Lángos). Mmmm.
So this is basically more like a beef stew (Pörkölt). This has like a looks like to have a thick hearty type of sauce gravy on top of it and then over here this appears to be potatoes with parsley and other ingredients.
So we have having something I believe it is called Somlo (Somlói Galuska) it could be pronounced differently that is how it is written. But it is basically a sponge cake with whipped cream and ice cream (Somlói Galuska) and it has chocolate drizzled over top and rum. And walnuts. Oh wow.
So it is time for price point. It is a little bit sad because that meal was just so good. One of those things where you don't ever want it to end. We'll be coming back. We absolutely will be coming back. I actually think we'll be do another food video here. The food was that good.
I think we'll come back again. But anyways in terms of price point it was 6020 Forent which is 20 Euros and that was excellent value because this is what we got. We had two soda waters, two glasses of wine, two mains, an appetizer to share and a dessert to share. So for 10 Euros per person we can't go wrong and what I really liked about this restaurant was that the focus was on the food not on the decour. It kind of had that like bodegon type of feel that you find in Argentina where it is kind of rustic inside, very traditional. Traditional kind of like family restaurant.
It locally is called uh Kék Rózsa Étterem but in English you call it The Blue Rose Restaurant. And man that this was a find. We will definitely be back and uh yeah if you are in Budapest, Hungary and you're looking for a good place to have traditional Hungarian food highly recommend this spot. This was wonderful.
This is part of our Travel in Hungary video series showcasing Hungarian food, Hungarian culture and Hungarian cuisine.

The only thing we booked in advance was our accommodations and we used airbnb which we'd definitely recommend. You can find some nice apartments in the heart of the old city. You could also consider hotels with booking dot com maybe. I would start looking soon as you'll have max availability at this point.

Am in Budapest at the moment 23rd of June 2019, and we just got back from lunch at this restaurant and thank you so much for the recommendation, the goulash with parsley potato in the video was amazing and the potato fritters from it also amazing, we had the rum and walnut chocolate pancake for desert and a rum and walnut sponge cake all the food was to die for! We had 2 soft drinks (Pepsi) to mains and a starter and 2 deserts for £24 English money. So cheap and amazing flavour, I am a former chef and it amazed me.

Thanks for posting your Hungarian experience. If you don't want to butcher the Hungarian language, learn the pronounciation of each letter in the alphabet -- including letters with the accents and double letters. Hungarian is a phonetic language. Once you learn the alphabet you can pronounce all words correctly. e.g. the town of Eger -- both "e"s are pronounced exactly the same, like "ehgehr". BTW, traditional Hungarian gulyásleves is always a soup. I'm a Hungarian (Magyar) refugee living in California.

Love to see you guys are having such a good time in Europe! - And recently watching your vlog felt like a déja vu for me as you've been in my home town (Nuremberg) and visited two of my favourite city trip destinations (Prague and Budapest) AND obviously your next destination is going to be Krakow (if I remember correctly), another of my favourites! If you ever come back here, I would recommend a roundrip Nuremberg - Vienna - Budapest, it's so convenient to do by train!

About the soup vs stew thing: What happened was that for some reason, outside of Hungary, what's known as a pörkölt ended up getting mixed up with the name goulash (from the word gulyás). So it's not that people just make weird stewey goulash outside of Hungary and get it wrong - it's just that what we know as goulash is actually called pörkölt in Hungary, the names just got messed up. This could have happened back in the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, because they've been serving pörkölt and calling it goulash in Vienna for ages.
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 7 жыл бұрын
That is fascinating to hear. Thanks for explaining that. Honestly, I believe most goulash served outside of Hungary (at least what we've tried) more resembles Pörkölt.
@tbirdparis
@tbirdparis 7 жыл бұрын
It sure does more resemble pörkölt, because people are literally making that but just calling it goulash cos that's what we think the name is. Great videos btw. You guys always make me hungry. Stop it! :)

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos The story is more simple than you think: Both Goulash Soup and Marha/Borjú (beef/calf) Pörkölt starts with fat/oil, onion/garlic, ground paprika, beef/calf. From that point the simmering stuff divides. If you cook with little water, some red wine, pepper and other specific spices for long time - you get the thick juicy stew. If you water it down and put in potatoe, carrot, somesul optional veggies, spices and broth it as a soup - you get Goulash Soup. As for herdsman in the wild cooking in a cauldron/pot the soup gives more warmth e.g. in winter. While the stew is more like a festive choice for the herdsman. For the stew version you need garnish, bread or potatoe baked, tossed in the ambers of the fire, when cooked peeled the burnt coating and eat the potatoe in one. Mind that both paprika and potatoe came from the New World, therefore this food in this today's form started quite after the 1600's. Just like the tomatoe for Italians, the tomatoe sauce for pasta wasn't invented before the 16th century...

The topic with the goulash might be a bit confusing: What we in Austria call "Gulasch" is our version of what the Hungarians call "Pörkölt" - and it is a stew. The Hungarian "Gulyas" however is what in Austria is called "Gulaschsuppe" - and it is a soup.

Yeah, almost everyone is surprised that originally goulash is not a stew, but rather it is a hearty soup. In return, those Hungarians who never been abroad are equally surprised, when they order goulash during their first foreign travel, that they will get a less than perfectly flavoured beef stew instead. The translation of the meal is 'cattleherder's soup', which the cattleherders prepared for themselves in the evening, over open fire at the overnight camp in the Hungarian Plain. It is an all-in-one, one dish meal for men, who had done cowboy's job from sunrise to sunset. In Hungary they respect this tradition, and don't usually order a heavy main course dish after the goulash soup, but rather some light dish. A classic combination for example a goulash soup followed by 'somlói galuska'. (This would've been a less expensive option as well). The 'marhapörkölt', which literally means beef stew, is a heavy main course dish, which would've been better served with either a light soup, or other appetizers. My favorite combination for example, is sourcherry cream soup, (cseresznye leves), followed by this spicy, Hungarian beef stew. IMO The waiter should've informed you about these things.

Thank you! Really appreciate the background information. That is really fascinating about goulash outside of Hungary. I wonder why that happened where it is often prepared as a stew. We'll have to try the sourcherry cream soup. That sounds delicious.

To be truthful, I don't know for sure. It's possible, that foreigners got tired of the explanation, the sundry conditions and restrictions attached to it, such as that 'it has to be a soup, but make sure it is a rich, hearty soup, which shall satiate the consumer by itself'. The chefs may have thought: ' Hell with that. Where is the profit in that? The guests shall be filled by the soup, and they hardly order anything after this soup. We make a conventional beef stew instead, and call it 'goulash'. These things happen all the time. Something is lost during translation. Here is a reverse one: There was an Austrian, who brought this to my attention. He resented, that many Hungarians make a mockery of Wiener schnitzels, who serve breaded pork cutlets and call it 'bécsi szelet', when it's specifically calls for veal, to be worthy of its lofty name. Now I'm sure, that internationally trained chefs in luxury hotel restaurants in Budapest continue to make it from veal, but what happens when this item gets into the tourist menu, in a more popular and less pricy establishment? Answer: It will be simplified, or 'bastardized', depending on your point of view. ☺

Gulyás is a stew, gulyásleves is a soup. Not so difficult, or is it? And yes pörkölt is also goulash abroad but who cares? All are delicious.

Yes, I always believed that langos was deep-fried biscuit dough covered in garlic butter and tasty white shredded cheese. It should definitely look like bread dough stretched by hand and when fried may have a bubbled texture.

As hungarian say the original gulyás is hungarian. The gulyás is a soup, outside hungary is mean a stew. The original lángos is not from potato.Its from flour, milk, eggs, salt, sugar,yeast, kefir.

Sorry to say this, but the 4th is not the traditional Lángos, because there should be no potato in it. It is burgonyalányos (burgonya (or krumpli) means potato). I hope you will try the original too :) We pronounce somlói galuska like Shomlooi Galushka. So the 's' you see is 'sh' aaand the 'sz' is the English 's'. So Budapest is actually Budapesht ;)
