Lang Lang has played the extended Horowitz version before. The transition at 1:43 was almost certainly intended to save time. We've all heard the 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody... the audience doesn't want to waste a quarter of an hour listening to Horowitz's interpretation. These people ain't looking to hear the full 10-12 min version of this piece, they looking to hear some cool classical-style music. You don't want to try to cram a full classical performance into a music festival. Btw the people clapping midway through is completely inappropriate in a formal classical setting. That was not a formal classical setting.

I don't like this performance. But this is not a formal concert anyways. That's what I like about Lang Lang. He can be world-class pianist when the audience includes lovers and masters who knows and appreciates classical music. But he could also be a great entertainer when the audience are just average Joe's and just wants to see "cool" techniques and piano banging. And from their clapping during the performance, I believe the latter case is true here. That, in my opinion, is the definition of a great performer. He always makes his audience happy.
@Pixeliarmus

I think Lang Lang did quite well. I think it is clear he was pressured to keep his interpretation brief, so instead he makes up for this with power, giving the audience a performance they won’t soon forget. I still think Cziffra has the best performance of this piece, but this was certainly entertaining to watch.

Everyone know that it’s a different arrangement, people saying it’s bad because it’s so radically different, stop comparing apples to oranges. This isn’t a formal concert, he’s being an entertainer more than musician, and providing an entertaining performance, playing fast showing off etc. don’t insult the lack of musicality, because that’s not what he’s going for. I can guarantee he can play the original arrangement much better than anyone here whining about how one of the the best pianists on earth is ‘ruining’ their favourite piece

For any of you complaining, this is the Horowitz version of the piece. Lang Lang did nothing
@fredfeinberg3995
@fredfeinberg3995 6 жыл бұрын
It is not. Huge parts of it are simply removed, and Horowitz never did that. He also played with pinpoint command, instead of this random whatever crass banging. Don't get me wrong: Lang Lang is a great player, but this... not his best moment.

to all the people complaining about his performance like he’s playing too fast, he kills the piece, he’s adding modernistic things that don’t fit, he breaks the piano whatever... I’m very sure he is able to play it in another way. But this is the Horowitz arrangement and he has chosen this for his performance. If you’d have his talent I bet you would also try different things and change some pieces slightly to check out how it sounds in another way. Please, at first play as marvellous as he does before judging and if you don’t got any talent... just shut up and listen.

I don't normally listen to Liszt but wanted to hear LL play this. Just amazing. I am amazed at his ability to get softer and softer even though the technique gets more difficult. I mean, this is a showpiece, it has to be played that way. It is supposed to be uncontrollable frenzy at the end. Loved it. Ling LIng puts it on list of 10 most difficult.

@elainemeyer5062

I’ve been a classical pianist and organist for more than a century. I hope your comment about it being short and ‘easy’ was meant to ONLY listen to, and NOT to PLAY!? It’s definitely not an easy piece to play, although Lang Lang can always make an easy piece sound difficult, and a difficult piece sound easy! The reason why it appears to be ‘short’ in the length of time it took was bc of it being an ‘abbreviated’ version of the complete one composed. IF you like L. L.’s style, he does a beautiful rendition of ‘Fur Elise’ (which I’d consider as a ‘beginner’s’ piece to learn and not technically difficult like this), then I’d recommend watching his video of it. (But make sure you watch the one that’s on his channel, and not any one by an ‘amateur’ video taker.) I ❤ it - just as much as I do his more difficult ones - hope you do too!
