I thought the scene was done very well. Having it shown in pieces spread out over a long time frame gave it the impression of being one of Katniss' memories that she thinks about somewhat frequently (at least after Peeta's name was called.)

Yeah, I agree. When the first movie came out, it actually didn't end up catching my interest, and I let it pass by unwatched. But when I started seeing trailers for the second one, I was like, "....well shit, I wanna see this now." :p So I went back and watched the first movie and read the books to get myself ready for the second movie when it came out. It's my favorite of the movies, and Catching Fire was my favorite of the books as well.

Ok so that scene of Peeta throwing the bread to Katniss takes place 4 years before the movie. Katniss’ father was killed in a mining accident and she had to go hunting in the woods to help feed fed family. But at the time it was winter and she was still too afraid of being caught to go deeper in the woods to find game. She and her family were starving to death, I can’t remember if she was on her way back from the woods and only had enough energy to make it to the bakery or if she was waiting there on purpose to try and find food in the trash. But Peeta saw her out there and burnt the bread on purpose, knowing he’d have to give it to the pigs and knowing his mom would beat him for him, he burnt it on purpose and threw it to Katniss. The next day at school Katniss saw a dandelion blooming so she knew spring was on the way and she could go hunting again.

"The Hunger Games" were created as a way of breaking the morale of those who rebelled against the Capital. Yes, it is wildly cruel and unfair, but it also crushes hope--not least because it taints everyone with guilt. Everyone desperately wishes for one of their tributes to win, which means they have to root for the violent murder of all the others, including one of their own. Thus the districts, who should be allies, are bitter rivals--and everyone feels a taint of guilt for desiring the death of (over the years) dozens and dozens and dozens of children.

I genuinely DO love these amazing movies, and consider them really good adaptations that are almost as good as the books. That being said, the only sad thing is that a lot of Katniss's inner monologue, which shows SO much about what she is feeling and thinking while she is being so stoic, strong and emotionally blank on the outside, is missing, which can make the character a lot harder to connect with and confusing to watch, as well as making Jennifer Lawrence seem like a bad actress if you don't really know why she is not emoting much. But yeah, I get why they didn't do voice overs or anything cringy like that, and I still think the movies work very well even if you haven't read the books.

15:33 that's the point. The career alliance usually breaks off near the end on good terms until the finale (or they go at eachother and obviously some die in the process) but they know teaming up means sponsers so they do it. And then they fight it out when it's just them, since all of them are trained, it's more "entertaining".

Something never mentioned, the great work of background actors and extras. Not a single one is there just filling the space, but acting. The lady just behind the mother, the girls around Prim, the boys around Peeta exhaling a sight of relief followed by a look of pity towards the chosen kid, the group as a whole reacting to the situation when Katniss volunteers. Excellent.

@@susanmaggiora4800 Nah, Lord of the Flies is just what happens when kids are dumped on their own with zero outside input from adults. Battle Royale is what happens when they are forced by adults to kill each other and most already come from the same school - the degrees of messed up cannot even be quantified in that film. In a way even the ending of HG is similar to BR, total young adult teen bullshit ripoff. I don't understand why it is that American films/book with teenagers have to all be about love interests and sullen, broody characters. It's just tiresome, and certainly not the kind of fiction to pull me out of everyday life (which at present really needs great fantasy to displace us from it pronto).

One of the biggest lacking things of the movies is right at the beginning of this one. They'll never explained clearly than you could "buy" a year of food supply for 1 person by adding one time your name in the bowl for the random draw, which is why this "games" ares called "the Hunger Games" (and why Katniss reassure her sister by telling her she only have one inscription, when her or Gale have so many). Kinda dumb to decide not to explain the title.
@samuelhiatt9338
@samuelhiatt9338 3 жыл бұрын
An interesting thing about the Hunger Games that is not really explained very well in the movies is that the selection process is a lottery in which rather than paying to enter, you get paid to enter. This meant that older eligible kids were putting their names in to be selected multiple times in exchange for food for their families. It mentions that Gale put his name in several times. This is why when Katniss is trying to console Prim, she tells her "your name's only been in once, they won't pick you." Meaning the odds of Prim getting picked were very small considering other girls were putting their names in multiple times.

I think the logic behind the "Send us your kids and it will stop you from rebelling" calls out to the fact that by giving 24 kids every year (tributes) will avoid war that will kill thousands. In the books, they explained that the Capital "won" the districts war by completely destroying District 13. So the people were basically given the choice between stop the fighting and you have 1 chance out of hundreds that your kid be reaped, or rebel and everyone in your district will die.

Suzanne Collins was flipping back and forth between channels, between a kids gameshow and Gulf War coverage, when the idea of kids competing to the death came to mind. The flashback scenes were of just after Katness' father died - her mother had become somnolent with depression, nearly catatonic, while she and Prim nearly starved to death. Out pawning Prim's baby clothes, Katness collapsed behind the bakery that Peeta's family ran and Peeta intentionally burned some bread, and his abusive mother hit him and told him to feed the bread to the pigs. He took the opportunity to toss some bread to Katness, which was enough to last them a couple days for dandelions and other weeds they could eat to come up. She feels that she owes a debt to Peeta, which is why she's so hesitant to kill him. For his part, Peeta's love for Katness is genuine: he'd been aware of her for years, because his father had pointed her out with a personal anecdote. His father admitted that he'd asked Katness' mom to marry him, but she'd married a miner instead because, "When he sang, even the birds stopped to listen." After that, Peeta started paying attention to Katness, especially during music classes, where Katness had a great singing voice. He's since come to admire her independence, and fierce dedication to family, something his own mother was lacking.

Everytime I see this movie I feel pretty bad for Cato (The final boy standing) when he dies, because I like his character so much and he´s kind of nice in that scene... In the book the only thing he sais is "If you shoot we both go down" or something like that (I only know the German version so I don´t exactly know what he sais in english) and I hate him for that. In the book, the only reason I feel sorry for him is that he´s suffering the whole night. In the movie he even gets kind of emotional I think. In the book the thing that I like about him is that he helps Clove (the knife throwing girl form district two where both of them live) to die which he doesn´t in the movie. In the movie he doesn´t even care about her death what maybe is the thing I don´t like about his movie character... But anyways I feel so sorry for him dying because he actually didn´t learn what he could have leard if he would´t have been growing up in district two where everybody wants their child to go ionto the arena and win the hunger games... I actually can understand his case in both book and movie very well...

the main premise for these books\movies was lifted from a 1990s Japanese film named Battle Royale where a lottery is held amongst students in the same class from a high school picked at random every year by the government to curb the rise in anti social behavior like truancy and disrespect for elders amongst teenagers (although the original film is a whole lot more violent in true Japanese style), so when you say someone had to think of the idea of kids fighting to the death in an organized battle it was the original Japanese screenplay writer. (I'm not sure if Battle Royale was also a book before a film was made)

Some say that hunger games is a rip off of battle royale. I haven't seen br and have no plans to do so. I only watched the hg movies because an associate loaned me the books and I was very impressed with Suzanne Collins. Not only that, but I also related to Katniss. I had to raise a younger sibling due to my mother being less than responsible. I made a HUGE sacrifice, just as Katniss did (mine didn't have life and death consequences but definitely career consequences). Never had the love triangle issue but I do enjoy the books and movies of this franchise.

The movies and books are so good. They have a lot of realism but also enough where we can escape. They needed a victor so there would be hope. The logic is give them enough controlled hope so they do not rebel but eventually like Rue dying just hurts. It was so sad. Katniss was reminded of Prim too. I think Peeta always had a crush on Katniss but Katniss throughout does not really know how she feels and should feel and she is trying so hard to hide her emotions. Many actually thought Jennifer Lawrence was a bad actor when they first watched or had not seen any other of her films but she plays Katniss so well. We just do not get thoughts in her head like in the books. I loved the reacted, it is fun watching it with someone who has never seen it and kind of reliving it. Even though it is very sad and has a lot of hints of real things.

sorry if someone mentioned this already but the author of the books, Suzanne Collins, her Father fought in the Vietnam War for the USA so the picking of the kids in the books/films is supposed to resemble the draft for the Vietnam War, and how so many young young people fought and died for essentially nothing because the Vietnam War was stupid (to put it very simply lol) and this was also one of the first times that footage from a War was so easily and quickly recorded and shown back home, hence a lot of the anti war sentiment in the USA and the protests of the 1960s and 1970s. I think that this context makes the films/books a lot more interesting since we watch them and think this is so crazy when in actuality this is kind of what the USA (and other countries) obviously have been doing for forever. Thanks for your reaction, it's so nice to see someone watch with no previous knowledge of the films! it's like I'm watching for the first time too :)

I'm not sure if this was in the books; I don't remember it very well but I think the mutts, the tiger things were made from the corpses of the already fallen tributes in the arena because their eyes looked similar to the ones of the tiger things. Idk if I'm right, but if I am... that's insane and super sad :(

Poor Cato he finally figured he was brainwashed the whole time and in the end when he died he figured everything out, so at least he died not being used by the capitol, in the books Cato was being torn apart buy the mutts from night till morning, all night long, then in the morning he was nothing but a twisted lump of flesh, and then he said please and katniss shot him out of mercy

Mari, you are my favorite reactor on KZbin. You're insightful, emotionally honest, confident and sympathetic. You are knowledgeable about film theory and have great taste. I also have a little digital crush on you and that incredible accent. But I cant go along on the Hunger Games journey. I did it once upon release and I just cant do it again. Jennifer Lawrence is quite good but the writing, both plot and dialogue are simply not of a re-watch, even annotated, level quality. I'll see you on the other side. Has anyone ever suggested Midnight Run with DeNiro and Grodin? Thats a great one.

WHO THOUGHT OF THIS - great question, there is a prequel book call A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The Hunger Games was a Theoretical Idea that was made as a school project, the creator did not think it would actually be used/ happen. the Prequel i going to be a movie now, the creator is going to be played by Peter Dinklage, it explains how and why the games were created, i think you would really enjoy all the books

I love this movie but the ending chase scene was so much more intense in the books because Peeta's leg actually never healed so climbing up a tree was out of the question even though it what Katniss really wanted to do to get away from the mutts. It was also tense because Peeta couldn't run as fast as Katniss.

Great reaction! Waiting to watch the other movies! I think overall the movies did a good job with the adaptation, but my biggest issue with it is the too little screen time they give to explain Katniss and Peeta’s history with each other. I recommend reading the books (or listening to the audio version) to get more details about everything. It’s very different from the movies because it’s all from Katniss’s POV and a lot is going on in her head.
