Mags’ death was way more horrific in the book. She was described as having her body taken over by terrible convolutions and making sounds of pain before dropping dead.
@ShadowsintheEyes
@ShadowsintheEyes 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's also more upsetting in the book because the whole sequence lasts longer. First Finnick carries Mags as Katniss and Peeta run. Then Peeta gets too injured and can't run. Because Katniss isn't strong enough to carry him, Finnick has to take over, and Katniss tries to carry Mags. And so you have a little hope that they'll all make it, but then everyone has to come to the realization that Katniss unfortunately isn't strong enough to carry Mags while running either, and then that's when we have to watch poor Finnick lose his dear friend and mentor. I find that the book version twists the knife deeper than the movie, which jumps too quickly from Katniss can't carry Peeta to Mags sacrificing herself.

This film (and series for that matter) is by far the most accurate book to movie adaptation I've ever seen, especially thinking of how big scale they are. This is one of the reasons I love them so much. This movie especially is so accurate and is the shining star of the series for me. I remember losing my shit when the first trailer came out and the arena looked exactly like what I'd imagined in my head.

Just two details, might edit later: The peacekeepers in District 12 were known to be lax when it came to people getting food, particularly by illegal hunting, which is why the electrified fences are there and only got turned on when under new management. Also, the entire blackmarket area was the place they were raiding, a place they were also kinda lax with, due to their old head peacekeeper being an alcoholic. Mags (the old lady) was Finnick's mentor and helped him win his games when he was 14, making him the youngest tribute ever.

I think Peeta meant that they would take one month of Peeta’s & Katniss’ monthly winnings & that would be divided up amongst the parents of the competitors who died in those games (every year), which would still be a decent amount. That’s how I always took it. Also, I don’t recall Peeta killing anyone & Katniss only killed people who were directly threatening her, Rue or Peeta with death. She never went out of her way to hunt competitors down. It might be splicing hairs, but I do think it’s significant.

Peeta just killed Brutus, when he killed Chaff at the end of the Quarter Quell and that's the beauty of him. Katniss said to Haymitch and I think Finnick how everyone "deserved" to be inthe Hunger Games again but no Peeta, he's not a killer before the Quarter Quell. Also, the girl who died from the bonfire, was already hurt by some career, he just stayed by her side and wait for her death.

I think one of the points people can miss about the Hunger Games is how strategic the rules are. It's not just meant to punish the districts for rebelling; it's meant to also make them hate each other so they won't ever reunite in rebellion to overthrow the Capitol again. It's the same reason why the Capitol treats Districts 1, 2 and 4 better and neglects the lower districts. Creating this inequality and having tributes from different districts kill each other helps foster mistrust and hatred among the districts. Having two tributes from each district just takes that mistrust one step further. The Capitol intentionally does not want citizens feeling united even within their district. Having one kid survive at the expense of the other's life pits families and classes against one another within the district. There may not be outright hatred in that case but there'll probably be some resentment. The movie doesn't focus to much on this point, but the Capitol also intentionally fosters classism in the districts. In district 12, there are the poor working class and the not-as-poor merchant class who live in different parts of the town and have completely different lifestyles. As if that weren't enough to make the classes not like each other, they also build this into the Hunger Games system. The poor can opt to have their children's names entered into the draw extra times in exchange for more government-issued rations. The economy is setup so that to survive basically every poor family will have to take 'tessarae' (the additional rations). Therefore, the poor children have a much higher chance of having their names drawn to go to the Hunger Games than the merchant class children. This divides the district internally with additional animosity between the classes. The Capitol's MO is divide and conquer, and they know that the fear and grief related to the murder of children is a powerful tool to divide. I think it becomes clear when you reread the books in light of the political themes that come in Mockingjay.

And it feeds into How Katniss and Peeta are the symbols of Rebellion. Katniss was poor, Peeta was merchant. Literally him giving Katniss that bread after burning it (Intentionally or not.) Was the first act of Rebellion. He went pass class. Then add and tack on how he stuck up for her, protected her and gave her the opportunity to get ahead over the other tributes.

Effie wasn't seems care on the previous movie because district 12 barely have the winner (except Haymitch) so she never get attached to anyone (she never really hoping there will be winner from district 12). So when they meet Peeta and Katniss and escort them everyday, she got attached to them very much (as well with Haymitch).

13:45 I believe it's because those people are from District 1 and 2. They have like academy for Hunger Games and their tributes are often from volunteers and not from raffle like other district. And they have the job to teach the next Hunger Games participant, it's like a career for them (hence the Alliance between District 1 and 2 are called careers, because they do Hunger Games as a job and not games).

12:37 She's an Avox. Avox are citizens of the Capitol or one of the 12 districts who did something to rebel against the government or tried to escape their district. They're captured, their tongues are cut out so they can never speak again, and they are from that point on slaves in the Capitol for the rest of their lives. You meet an Avox and his brother named Castor and Pollux in the 4th movie. Avoxes are barely mentioned in the movies but are much more heavily discussed in the books.

The books really do a good job of showing Effie's transformation from someone who is fully invested and believes in the Capitol to someone who becomes attached to her victor tributes and begins to view the games as just cruelty and torture. When they're forced to go back she finally snaps and completely breaks down in front of Peeta and Katniss showing that she realizes what she is forced to take part in at this point is wrong.

You don't need to worry about the quality. This is a series of three books (the last book was split in two for the films), conceived together by the author, and staying fairly true to them (with minor differences). This isn't a film series where they're trying to think of a way to continue it. It has a definite beginning, middle and end.

I think Haymitch is the best character in the book. They all went through some bad stuff, but he ended up with nothing. Every year, he had to go into it, knowing he will have to go back to his district and live with 2 more death on his conscience. Turned out that it was caused by a Tumor in his head and even though he recovered mostly from it it seems his days are counted from now on. Its hard to face the truth that our loved ones can go sick or even worse in a blink of an eye and it can be very frightening.

I'd say the first two are better than the next two, but I'd still say they're worth watching. They don't overdo the concept and make it boring, they continue the story so even if they're not as good, they don't take away from the first two and you get to experience the ending.

Don't worry, all the movies in this series are great, not just the first two. I can't even decide which one I like the most, they are all that good. P.S. Hope your cat is ok! P.P.S. You seemed to have some confusion about why Peeta didn't volunteer for Katniss - 1 male and 1 female must be chosen from the district, so Peeta could only volunteer for Haymitch. If you got it - disregard this :)

The third novel was fairly complex. But if they tried, they could have adapted it into one movie instead of two. They were stringing things out and going for more box office payout. So the two Mockingjay films feel a little padded, but still okay.

I know you’re probably tired of hearing this, but I read the books before three were movies. Ohhhh great... good for me, right. But, with that out of the way, my mental image was very different from the movies. Both are excellent. The next two movies will be different from the first two. I enjoy your reactions, especially the visceral, non-verbal ones, because they illustrate exactly how I felt seeing the film for the first time without any lingual or cultural barriers. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re pretty awesome.

Can I just say how I'm enjoying your channel so much. I saw this one recommended by KZbin and realised all your videos are all the things I love, so I went through and binged almost all of them: Game of Thrones (can't wait for more please!), Star Wars, Hunger Games. For someone who said they used to be a "hater" of Star Wars in your first reaction, you've come a long way with sci-fi/fantasy and I'm glad you're enjoying it! I would recommend, if you haven't seen them already, WESTWORLD and STRANGER THINGS, I think you'd like them a lot. Westworld is deep and complex, and graphic like Game of Thrones (both HBO shows), very story-driven - you're meant to be confused sometimes! Stranger Things I'd say is structured similar to Star Wars in that it's very character-focused, and feels like an adventure/mystery in a way, and genuinely the best children actors I think I've ever seen. Also, a longer one to try but most episodes stand well by themselves, a bit more light-hearted, is DOCTOR WHO (or "New Who" as they call it, the 2005 ones onwards). If you want something intriguing and darker and very thought-provoking (but not horror, usually more thriller but not always, they're all pretty different from each other) you could try BLACK MIRROR which is a series of stand-alone stories that each usually focus on a not too unrealistic technology advancement and speculates what life would be like with that in our everyday lives. I hope to see one or more of these on your channel one day, and keep it up! :)

I love your reactions! This movie is the favorite for most people, but I read all the books before seeing the movies and because of that this is actually my least favorite (still really good) because there are a lot of important parts they didn't show in the movie, for example Katniss already found out about district 13 in the beginning of the book with changes some perspectives, the reason why there was blood in president Snow's champagne glass, etc. The third book is my favorite and I was happy that they turned the book into 2 movies so they didn't have to leave to many parts out. Definitely watch these ones to, they are amazing!

Hope your cat gets better soon! And yeah, you should watch the whole series. I don't want to dissuade you, but I do think that the last two movies are not quite as good as the first two, they drag on a bit IMO, I think that they could have done the last book as one movie (the series is 3 books), but that might have been too short, but I think there wasn't quite enough to split it into two either. Just my opinion, but I still enjoy them and you should definitely watch them I'd like to see your reaction to completing the whole series!

I understand why you are nervous about the next movies being good or not, but remember that they are adaptations of books. The story is written. The plot line doesn't have to be extended to make more movies. They made the last book into 2 movies, but there are plenty of story to fill both movies :) Also...the ending of this second movie (and book) means that the story is built up a bit different than in the first 2 ones. But the story is good!! I very much recommend watching the last 2 as well! (I also recommend reading the books, as they are even better, - more background on the characters etc), but I don't know if you enjoy reading. They are REALLY good though ;)
