It really is a headscratcher why great games such as this were never officially released for Super Nintendo outside Japan. Such a shame! Whoever was responsible for the artwork and visuals in this game took a lot of care, and I really appreciate their efforts; it's a real treat for the eyes. I'm glad the instruction booklet got a mention here too. I looked through the manual online and I'm very glad I did as it's beautiful. Makes me mourn once more the lack of booklets with current games!

It's really a shame it didn't come out in English-speaking regions. I think it would've done very well and given how much polish it has, it would've been a classic. I love how this game's OST really pushes the limits ofr what the SNES' sound chip was capable of. And it's also the soundtrack that got me to try the game out back in college. I was letting the algorithm play a mix of video game music for me while working on some coursework when the track @3:55 came on and I thought "Damn, that's a really crisp harpsichord sample!...what game IS this from?" and the rest was history.

It's like Hudson decided to throw away down the sink the Milon Secret Castle formula (it does have a decent GB port though), started from scratch, and came up with something brilliant. You speak of the games animations, let Milon idle for a little bit, I believe he actually has a rather cute idle animation. Still have my Wii, still got it from the VC on that Wii, got it THE day it was put on the original VC service.

I was a big fan of this one, though I'll admit it's been so long that I felt like I was seeing a lot of this footage for the first time. The visual design is just so vibrant; it's like Magical Pop'n on steroids. I did also like most of the music, mostly because of how weirdly dissonant it is; in a bright, colorful Platformer like this, you usually get happy, bouncy tunes, but most everything here had a weirdly dark feel to it. I especially like the one that sounds like a cat quickly running across a piano, with a few chimes and light wind to fill the rest of the silence; it reminds me of a wonderful cloudy day. Maybe that's the synaesthesia talking; a lot of music hits differently because of that.
@hungrygoriya Жыл бұрын
That tune you've described is the one where I was leaning in real close to hear what I was actually listening to, haha! Synaesthesia sounds like such a cool thing to have. I'm glad you love the music in this game.

@@hungrygoriya It's both a good and bad thing; I love being able to see music, taste colors, and hear feelings, but I do sometimes get bad reactions. Some music, such as a majority of Illusion of Gaia's and Skyblazer's soundtracks, sound hot and can cause me to overheat, and the same thing happens when I look at Doom 64's lighting engine; almost passed out from that one. I also REALLY can't look at cracked glass; there was a broken cooler door at the supermarket one time, and I had to ask someone to get me the milk, because I couldn't stop shuddering.
@hungrygoriya Жыл бұрын

Great review. My favorite part of this game has to be the art. (Milon's expression around 9:34 still makes me chuckle.) As for not being released in the west, the game came out in 1996. Japan was getting some incredible Super Famicom games at the time. But the developers also didn't want to put time & money into translating games that would be competing with PS1 games in the west. :)

I fell into the camp of not being a fan of Milon's Secret Castle on NES, but the squeal could've been a lot of fun for me. It's another missed opportunity for games that never left Japan. A lot of them could've netted their companies a healthy profit and especially when there wasn't a lot of text needing to be translated. I don't know what a lot of them were thinking at the time, but at least we have fan translations to know what could have been.
@hungrygoriya Жыл бұрын
I know a lot of folks in that camp, but the sequel's a different cup of tea altogether. I wish they'd localized this one because I think it would've easily become a favourite for many people. It's just so well done all around. Thank goodness for fan translators!

I'm making a long-form video on the Milon's Secret Castle series with a specific highlight on this game as my debut video for this channel. I played this game as a kid on the Wii Virtual Console in the late 2000's, cause my dad bought it for me (for some reason!). I really enjoyed your video and your opinions reflect some of mine as well. Do you mind if I put a link to this video in the description of mine when the time comes? I don't want to use any of your footage, but I do want to direct people to your review if they are looking for a well spoken and concise review of one of my childhood games. I respect the work you've done, and although my channel is new and does not have a following, I still feel like I ought to do my part in spreading good vibes and shouting out good work when I see it.

Good luck to the channel launch! What a game to choose for a debut! I think people will really like it! You're more than welcome to link to my video if you like. Thanks for that! So this game I probably enjoy more than milon, but overall they are both pretty good for very different reasons. This game looks very gorgeous with its art style, and its music is lovely. My one complaint id say is finding the instrument stars to power them is a little annoying.
@hungrygoriya Жыл бұрын
You're right: they're both great in their own ways! I personally found the star hunt to be a little underwhelming since most of them were just there to grab and didn't take much effort, but I can see that being an annoying feature for some.

I’ve known about this game for a while, but I didn’t know the context of it until I watched this video. I kinda wonder as to what it would have been like if this game had been localized in the U.S., as the game looks graphically amazing by 16 bits standards. Although I’m guessing that the princess from the first game doesn’t appear in this one right, as I really liked the ending to the Game Boy port of the first game in which Milon and the princess got married at the end.
@hungrygoriya Жыл бұрын
It's a really wonderful game. I often wonder how things would've been different in these situations as well, and I especially wonder what it specifically was that kept this game away from coming to English-speaking regions to begin with. It's really unfortunate! And unfortunately the princess is long gone. Or maybe this story happens before Milon's Secret Castle because he's pretty young? I'm not too sure.
@johnnyd3158 Жыл бұрын
@@hungrygoriya Well, according to TvTropes at least, the game is actually set in an alternate continuity from the first game. In addition, the game was actually released in the U.S. on the Wii Virtual Console in 2008 under the "import" category of the store, as it was untranslated with Japanese text.

This is one of those games I've heard the name of many times, but somehow never learned what kind of game it is. I think I thought it was some kind of rhythm game! It looks light and relaxing. I might have to give this a go sooner rather than later. I noticed that Milon's clothing is different colors throughout the video. Does this signify something gameplay-wise, or is it just an aesthetic choice?
@hungrygoriya Жыл бұрын
Based on the title, I'm not surprised you came to that conclusion! And the colour of his clothing corresponds to how many hit points he has. Red means one hit and you're dead, blue means two hits until death, and green is three. When you come back after death, you're always wearing red.

What charming visuals. I'll bet that 1996 release date explains a lot. The N64 was pretty close, and the Saturn and and Playstation were already duking it out. 3d graphics were all the rage, and 2d kid friendly platformers were old and outdated. Astal had already flopped on Saturn, so another game in the same genre with a chunk of story to translate on last gen hardware was probably considered a losing proposition.
@hungrygoriya Жыл бұрын
I'm honestly blown away that this kind of gaming just straight up died for the sake of FMV and 3D. Some of my favourite games I've played on the "newer consoles" like the PS1, Saturn etc. are 2D stuff that's reminiscent of the 16-bit generation. I'm one person, but I can't be the only one out there that loved that style so much. I hope more folks give DoReMi Fantasy a try either way. It's a great one!
@japanimationman4442 Жыл бұрын
You're definitely not alone. The sheer volume of pixel art indie games these days is proof of that. But they always feel off to me since they make the sprites super crisp and blocky. Playing an old 8/16 bit game on a CRT never feels like that, so it kinda spoils things for me. One of the reasons I like your channel is that you show just how fuzzy these games looked back in the day.
@three-quartersbadger2929 Жыл бұрын
I'm with you on the character spirte size issue. I 100% super metroid, but I could not understand why so many think it the greatest game ever as Samus was so big and some of her movements felt awkward. Another game that I feel that way about is Mega Man 7. Still a very good game, but the scale is wrong.
@hungrygoriya Жыл бұрын
Honestly, Super Metroid makes me feel a bit motion sick. I wish they'd made some of the screens more compact like the first game and shrunk down the sprite size. I didn't mind it so much when I played it, but watching other people with the screen flailing all over the place makes my stomach turn. It's really unfortunate because the game's a lot of fun but yikes...
