Aldy I would have not thought wood that has been laid out on a place for who knows how long would have had any shrink left in them. I learned about wood shrinking after building a pier and spacing the boards with a piece of base trim, by the time the new green wood dried out you could drop a phone between some of the planks.
@AldyOutside
@AldyOutside 4 жыл бұрын
Jason Burson yea totally I hear ya, thing is wood constantly swells and shrinks based on its moisture content (if were gettin technical lol) so I mean hell, if it sat there and got rain on er, it would swell, then dry out and shrink. Rinse and repeat! I get a kick out of guys building privacy fences with the boards tucked tight... then a week or two goes by and theyre scratchin the ol noggin askin what happend lol

Yep...the green treated decking boards I used horizontally on the walls of my treehouse shrank too once they dried out...have quarter inch gaps between all the boards...and they aren't even screwed to real trees (6" x 6" beams sunk into the ground vertically)...so I know the tree growth was a non factor. Besides, the trees moisture is in the roots during winter...so they're not growing right now.

As an experienced deer stand builder I can tell you that trees sway, and that is probably part of your structural problems. Just wait until you have leaves on the trees to catch the wind. Your four corners will twist and turn in some funky ways. If you really want to build a tree fort it sort of needs to float up in the tree, not totally secured in a typical fashion to a sturdy complete base. Good luck!

Yeah, winter air is much drier than it seems, drys those boards out good and proper. Lots of ways to fix what he has there though. Ship lap is probably the way to do it. The bigger problem is the tarps and keeping the trees together, and hopefully the roof is good-to-go.

wood moves, thus the invention of "tongue and groove" .. you built with wet wood and it shrank, by using a tongue and groove the wood can expand and contract without gaps.. is easier than it sounds.

Overlapping ship lap works best then there is no horizontal gap. Water sheds of the lower edges. You can still do it with square edge boards if that’s all you have.
