I am completely okay with Kier Starmer having nice clothes for the purpose of conducting his work as envoy of our country. I really want them driven in Jaguars and wearing nice suits. It's don't really consider it enriching oneself, particularly if they are consumable items that won't last longer than the term. I don't think the broader public will ever agree with me, but it's suspicious that nobody is saying that. Whether they are gifts, paid for by the tax payer, part of a salary allowance, I have less of an opinion. I think there's soft power in image and we're struggling for soft power in the UK and at risk of depending on hard power.

I agree with you for the most part. I think the key issue is where these gifts are coming from, and what may/may not be expected in return for them. Having British tailors make garments for the PM or whatever, would be good. Comes out of tax. No problem. Starmer being in a position where he's being given 'free' stuff by anyone with money and access is never going to end well.

If it was paid for by the party that's one thing, are they all being dressed at a certain stature? the chancellor? foreign secretary? how many positions? id be ok with that. as they are the forward facing. If its from a private donor to an individual the idea of buying influence is much more clear cut id argue. What do they expect in return? If all the parties started putting aside a budget for X number of people to be dressed "appropriately" to their position, id be fine with that. Then donors could maybe donate directly to that "fund".

If it is wrong, you shouldn't give a president that power if you expect them not to use it for their own son. If it was a movie, people would be screeming at the TV for him to pardon his son and he'd be an unlikeable character if he didn't. I disagree, I expect better from the politicians who represent us. Saying the Tories do it, is not a valid argument. its an excuse. Kier Starmer is well recompensed in his current job. He can afford his own clothes. It could be interpreted as buying influence as its a personal gift, not something that is directly benefiting the Labour Party itself, like maybe an advertising campaign could be argued to before an election.

Well Musk can give Farage as much money as he likes but there are laws in this country about MPs revealing their incomes, and they cannot spend more than a certain amount during elections. So, bit of a bad investment really. Also, under 30s notoriously just do not show up on polling day, despite being very politically engaged. Ask Rick Wilson. It's your greatest challenge and anyway, young people are far far less likely to be Fash. Also, factor in Musk being actually pretty stupid, and won't know any of that.
