Gon was not 12 per say, more like late 12, turning 13. Assuming he just turned 12 at the very start of the series. The Hunter Exam was inside a month, Heavens Arena was like 2-3 months, Greed Island was around 3-4? I'm probably naming longer time frames to be safe. Let's just say 7 months passed at this point, give or take, that means he's still 12 turning 13 by the time Palm dumped him. Then another month passed after that before he got his nen back, and then more time passed before the attack. So you can say he's 13 by the time Chimera Arc is done.

You guys have to remember that no matter how crazy he may seem, Illumi absolutely loves Killua. Even the needle placed in his head was out of love, as he wanted to protect him. He just had pretty sick ways of showing it lol

Illumi’s needle was for his brothers protection, otherwise he’d go into dangerous situations recklessly. Tbh Gon could use this. Lol However, it was also a hinderance since Killua wanted to be a hunter. Killua taking it out, takes away his fear restrictions, he starts thinking the impossible is possible.

That's the thing, the Zoldycks have never been hunters. They are assassins and it worked great for them so far. Their family with its small number basically rivals countries and even the hunter association and they have the strongest human confirmed alive.

Well, considering situations Killua got himself into, it is a miracle he made it out alive. I mean this guy was going to face Pitou, almost got killed by chimera Palm and not to mention certain death by chimera soldiers if not for Ikalgo. Chimera squad was so ill suited for Gon and Killua fighting styles that it's laughable. All members except Netero had a distraction/nullification type ability that allowed to counter the vast power gap. Sensible Killua would've never participated as a direct combatant, but more like a hidden stun gun with Meleoron.

Well, it has its limits. He can't keep getting stronger eating the same level of food. Once he reach a certain level, humans become ineffective. In the anime at the end he basically became stronger by feeding on his guards which are better food that any human Nen user.

by stronger you mean they display a large amount of aura... the stronger the aura the stronger the hypnotic effect... its effect works against aura even weaker than his such as Zushi's, its effect takes place any time he is faced with aura, but enhanced based on the amount of aura. This ants aura is probably equal to killuas, around 20k probably at the rank of captain, but as we see Rammot is not necessarily "stronger" than killua. Fan theories suggest Killua at this point has around 25k aura pool, though that is not confirmed whatsoever, its based on inference with lack of data

We know that Killua's dad and grandad know about the needle (they discuss it later), and if you remember his dad words to him (the promise never to abandon his friend) before he creepily predict to his wife that Killua is his son and will be back, the whole thing takes a nefarious tone: Silva made Killua promise not to abandon his friend and Illumi planted the needle. The whole plan is to have Killua abandon Gon to his death to break his spirit so that he runs back in his father's grasp willingly (believing that as Illumi once said he's not qualified to have friend even though the whole thing is his family's fault and not his own) and become a perfect assassin for them. Since Killua talked about Gon with his father, Silva knows that Gon is strongheaded and never backs down from incredible risks, and since he also knows he is a hunter, Silva can be certain that there will eventually be a situation where Killua will be forced to take huge risk to protect Gon and when that happens, the needle will strike and Killua will be forced to watch Gon die because he thinks he's too scared to help. The whole plan almost worked but Killua's devotion to Gon was so strong he resisted the needle long enough to figure out it was there.

I've been waiting for this for 74 episodes. You remember episode 20. Illumi said to Killua he was just testing and not really kill Gon. I believe he was testing his nen needle. So he put Killua in an impossible situation. Killua cannot fight Illumi since he think Illumi is stronger the nen needle prevent him to do anything. So Illumi said I'm going to kill Gon. So Killua motivation was at maximum to do something. Illumi tested if his nen needle will prevent Killua nomatter what. It worked. Then Killua was all fuck up in a Killing mood but could not fight Illumi so he had to kill the other guy. Amazing episode 20 yet we can only understand it fully 74 episode after.

I think killua had the needle since the beginning of the anime (illumi could have put that after the Hunter exame tho). He is cool and cold with people he thinks hes stronger. The ones he think are stronger than him, he has some trouble with. Like when he was trying to escape Nobunaga. Oh and he probably felt a pressure/pain where the needle was in his head.

I never liked that Killua's most important character development was because of a needle and not because of his own self.

I don't look at it that way. Killua would naturally agree with the needle in the past. But now when faced with extremely strong enemies and a wish to protect Gon is when he has runs into conflict with it. The needle didn't make him run away when he wanted to only when he resisted his assassin instincts. Sure the needle is part of it but it's also metaphorical. The idea of running away when faced with something your not sure you can beat was drilled into his head in more ways then one. This is the moment he finally breaks the conditioning.

Just out of curiosity, do most of y'all get this into who kills and who dies in the shows you follow? I mean I binged this show in just over 2 weeks and loved every second but I didn't care who survived etc (although Kilua could be an exception because without him I wouldn't be able to stand Gon's naivety/stupidity).
