2:54 Netero is talking about potential as a hunter. For killua, strength is everything. But for a hunter, there is more important thing. Do you remember Netero's "game" in the airship? Killua gave up easily, but Gon didn't. I think potential as a hunter is some kind of challenging spirits, and Netero already noticed something about Killua from that moment.

I'm kinda glad Killua is going through all of this pain and suffering. Think about it, the worse you are, the greater the other side will be. Without Killua being a killer, we wouldn't have had so many impactful lines like "I want to be his friend", "I'm sick of killing". Sad, but true. Also Netero needs to have worthy and strong Hunters out in the world for reason I cannot say without spoiling, so there is no need to hate him here haha

I mean Netero wants strong hunters to exist simply because it's his "ideal". He has lived his life pursuing ultimate strength, so he imposes that ideal onto others with his hunter exam test.

To be fair , and you'll see more subtles examples and proofs of it later on through the show , Killua was so much stronger than everyone in the exam , with the exception of Hisoka , Illumi and Hanzo . We all saw it , but we had no idea how much stronger actually . I don't think he was really jealous of Gon , he just did not understand everyone's else take on the events . From his perspective , it did not make sense to be ranked lower than Gon because he is more "friendly" and popular . Of course it does not help that Netero hides the criteria for rankings . And of course Killua was not even invested in the exam to begin with , and act bored all the time , while Gon and others gave their all . The initial ranking of their Hunter potential was fair , he just did not get it , nor that it's not even static , immuable in time , nor even that important

Let me give you and advice. Please watch this episode in HxH 99 version. Its one of the best scenes that I've ever watched in 90's anime. The art direction of Illumi / Killua scene is outstanding.

I think the reason Gon was evaluated better than Killua is because unlike the latter, he continuously was pushed to his limits and surpassed them, they were able to see how he performs when challenged or at a disadvantage, which is what really counts for potential. Sure, Killua is stronger currently, but it doesn't matter how good Killua is, if he doesn't show that he can become better.

True the evaluation of Netero wasn't how good you already are it was more like how good you still can become and how much effort you put in (normally) hopeless situations. Killua and others like Hisoka didn't really have a challenge and no one could actually evaluate there true potential, Netero obviously knew already how good they are because seeing them breezing through the tests without any problem. So not much to determine how good of a potential they hold and not really what they needed to measure anyone's potential.

I definitely think Gon is more interesting as he pushes his limits and tries to think differently of the problem at hand. While Killua resorts to what he knows best and is skilled in.

I actually love killua, and I know you’re a bit in but it’s nice to see how much he grows, although illumi still effects him throughout the series. Although zoldycks as characters are cool they are terribly abusive 💀 and togashi makes it known they are, everything from in the manga to canon books it’s all just so depressing 😕 and illumi is actually disgusting, but anyway this episode remains one of my favorites cause it made a switch sort of into the rest of the series and also the 1999 artwork was so mesmerizing for this scene

Fun fact, in the 80s version, Gon actually "loses" but they make him a Hunter bc he deserves it or something. And about Killua's family, did you know each sibling name is connected to the other ? Illumi > Milluki(Mentioned on a past episode) > Killua And all of them have 2 L's for some reason. And about Hunters, they really aren't "heroes", you could say they are all just insane or MIGHT be sociopaths, because damn, they are crazy

you mean the 90s version . And not really , it unfolded pretty much the same way . Hanzo was won over , gives up , KO Gon which refuses , and then wake up as a Hunter , with Satoz explaining pretty much the same thing

I think she has watched hxh before, My suspicions began when she kept predicting what's going to happen in the previous episodes. Furthermore, she writes Hunter x Hunter as "one of the greatest anime of all time" (in the description) even though she hasn't finished it. Sure, she could just write it coz that's what she knew about hxh, but still weird imo. Not definite proof. And here she still correctly predicts what's going to happen, saying the similar or even the EXACT SAME lines as the characters will say, and even remembering the side characters' names at her "FIRST TIME WATCHING".
