Gyro's backstory acfually helps explain why the Chimera Ants are so aggressive and destructive if you consider that the NGL brass and foot soldiers would share similar perspectives and disposition to Gyro in order to be a follower. And now most of them have eaten and some traces of their personalities are popping up in the Chimera Ants like with Colt. That's why Kite called it the worst combination imaginable.

I think the ants are aggressive by nature because of the NGL people they are eating. Just like Colt has the personality of the little boy and wants to protect the queen like the little sister he had when he was human. ​@@NotAnAstronaut2k It was dark from the start in the manga but there's still a darker tone-shift with the Yorknew City arc and then an even darker shift with the Chimera Ant arc. Moreover, it's not just darker in terms of violence but also thematically, with the exploration of pretty mature themes and character motivations in this arc compared to first three arcs which were somewhat standard shonen examination and tournament arcs (although Togashi did help pioneer these types of arcs as well, I believe).

The body also uses water to regulate salt levels, so having a bit more salt than usual keeps water in the body, which can then be reabsorbed for hydration as salt gets lost

While the anime never directly stated it Gon 1000% knew who was killed once he saw the bees. Remember that even in times when he saw bodies and people killed he reacted only a little even in times where you expect the scene to warrant so much more than the passing look he gives. So the amount of emotion in Gons' face confirms that he was aware. It is borderline confirmed and definitely implied that the ants take on even personal characteristics from the people the queen eats to create them. So eating violent power hungry people births violent power hungry ants.

To me, they all keep that predatory hunter instinct because they are all still Chimera ants as a whole. They inherit genetics from other species, but at their core they are still "ants." Sorta like how you can fuse pokemon but they're still classified as pokemon no matter how diverse you make their gene pool. I don't know if that made sense to anyone but myself, but let's go with that.

The reason death is often overlooked in this anime is because most of the people involved that arent civilians signed up for this. They literally chose death with the hopes of becoming a super rich god like celebrity. Thats literally the entire point of the hunter exam and its heavily stressed throughout the whole show. Getting your hunters license is far harder and far better than winning the lottery. In our real world there are hundreds of thousands if not low millions of child soldiers. Children younger than zushi that murder for money or no reason at all. When you get involved in a world like that you lost the right to sympathy. So it makes perfect sense why killua and gon and other young nen users get beat up so badly by stronger and older adults. Would you really let a 5 year old kid shoot 30 bullets into you and not try to shoot them first? Ha, enjoy being killed then, fool. Your mentality comes from the average civilian and thats why you dont understand. Youre wrong to impose your ideology and morals on a world that youd never step within 3 planets distance of because of your overwhelming fear and inability to commit. You have to accept that they live in a different world. Its shocking to the viewer for entertainment but its just another tuesday to them. Its the life they chose.

I know y’all hate the chimera ants and call the queen a villain, but at her core, she’s just an animal doing what animals do. I never really thought she was bad. The problem is the more humans she consumes, the more human the ants become, and therefor more evil. Part of what makes this arc the best one in the series (and a lot of anime) for me is the thing that Nicole touched on in the end convo. Parker said “they aren’t human” when you all were talking about Gon and Killua being able to kill them, and Nicole said that they’re forming their own personalities. This arc is the very quintessential “what is a human?” Or “what makes a human?” argument. It has the best character arcs in the series, and the best trope subversions!
