it's because of the aspect ratio. In this case, they had 16: 10 displays, they are slightly taller than 16:9, which is the standard aspect ratio that basically every display uses. No idea why they used 16: 10 displays on the event since you can clearly tell the game was made with 16:9 in mind

That annoyance you felt of having to hold down the L2 button to use the auto combos is actually a good thing. Like you said it made you want to learn how to do combos and thats exactly the point. The annoyance is to push players to actually explore and learn the game beyond what it will do for you.

I mean... the linear nature of the combo should be the drawback in itself. I remember back in the Blazblue days that I would use Stylish mode every time I picked a new character to get a basic grasp on what I should be doing with them. Cutting off game mechanics while using the learning tool does not make for a good learning experience.

More importantly, it means that overeager players won't have to worry about accidentally mashing out autocombos. I recall how one of Melty Blood: Type Lumina's biggest issues among players were how every attack button would let into its own dedicated autocombo chain, which turned away many people from the outset.

I don't think this game is gonna be super popular long after release as many technical fighters aren't sadly but I think people will keep playing this game for years if the mechanics end up being good enough. though if they would've taken the fighterZ approach with more auto combos it would be more popular. my main gripe about some fighting games I hope they don't do is make the casual mode a "search for room mode" only I think that hurts the casual scene hard in fighting games.

The HunterxHunter game looks sorta underwhelming. And keep in mind from what I remember this is the First HunterXHunter game (mobile or console) that we’re getting in English ever. Most Bushiroad published games are also $40-50 so it might not exactly be full priced but for what little it offers, I can’t see many people willing to buy it on launch honestly besides people who assume Arc System Works are developing it (they aren’t, just publishing for the west)

I think holding the auto combo button was annoying for you because it isn't really made for new Nen Impact player but for new fighting game players. Since you already were a fighting game player you knew that you should try to use your assists and specials but new fighting game player wouldn't know that and might just mash every button they can so they wouldn't mind, especially because calling an assist by accident could make the autocombo drop and it would be a bad experience for the player that don't know is going on. I agree that the autocombos might be too long though.

tbh, this is not just a fighting game thing, it's a thing overall. every multiplayer game goes through the honeymoon phase. enjoying it at first, more you play find things that annoy or you're like meh > ask to patch > if doesn't get patch > you give up and quit feel indifferent. LMAO this is exactly happening with overwatch gameplay over the years.

It won’t feel brainless if you eventually get an Arcade mode clear. Streets of Rage 4 Mania difficulty clear as an example.

You should definitely give old beat em ups a proper try, they feel like mindless mashy games because you, like everyone who plays for the first couple dozen times, are just trying to get to the end any means necessary. You put in more credits until you trudge your way to the final boss a couple hundred deaths later. This way of playing just ignores the depth that's on display. Old school beat em ups aren't about combos and attacking, they're about movement and enemy management. When you try to go for a full game clear without putting in any extra credits, you'll see just how hard it pushes you into having good movement and priority over all it's systems. You'll learn to hit enemies with well spaced jabs, to get in sneaky throws, use i-frames on the throw animations, jump in safely, etc. They share that core fighting game fundamental of needing good understanding and strategy over your opponents. I promise you they are much more fun than mashing games and you can't explore that without trying not to die and embracing their difficulty, which is a lot more fun to learn to get good at than anyone who calls them quartermunchers would claim.
