I think that’s honestly such an important detail about them, they are a really healthy depiction of a m/f relationship where they are true equals. I also REALLY appreciate that the writers didn’t heavily involve Willow or advance their romance arc when Hunter was going through the grief of being betrayed by Belos and the revelation he’s a Grimwalker. Likewise that Willow’s arc of self confidence didn’t involve a romantic partner offering external security. This ship could’ve easily devolved into a Saviour/Damsel or the unhealthy “fix-it” wish fulfilment where the abuse victim gets all the love and security they previously lived without through their romantic partner. I understand how cathartic fix-it romances can be but it’s unhealthy to real life victims to think a romantic partner saving them is the way to recovery, they need to grow beyond the reliance on external sources of self worth and develop it within themselves instead. I feel like there’s strong symbolism towards this aspect of recovery through Flapjack being inside of Hunter now instead of an external emotional crutch. But showing a victim’s recovery and a victim developing a healthy romance as distinctly SEPARATE things was really refreshing and I hope other writers take note of it!

What I like about Hunter x Willow the most is that they really seem to understand each other because they’ve been in their shoes before. They know exactly how it feels to be considered less than their peers and they heavily relate with one another. This pairing is way more than just another “good girl” gets with “bad boy” or “bad but sad boy” in Hunter’s case. Like Lumity, it’s two kids adorably falling in love because of how much they have in common and it’s plainly obvious how much they mean to one another.

But he is also willing to be vulnerable for her sake because he really really cares about her, and him just being, "you didn't make anything worse, you didn't do anything wrong!" And just that he is pleading her to not be so negative with herself and let the one thing that makes her feel worthless the most and is the one thing that really hurts her the most, and he's like telling her that she is the best thing ever to happen to him and that she shouldn't feel like she is worthless when she Is NOT whatsoever, is just really cute how concerned he feels about her.

I feel people need to know that Willow is actually currently 15. At the beginning of the show, Willow was 14 yes, but on a picture it shows her with her plant track suit (which we have seen her change WHILE the show was going on) on her birthday which confirms she's actually 15, and it has also been said on a Q&A live. Not to mention that 1) Even if she was 14 at the time of the relationship... that's two years, guys. That's not bad at all. 2) The whole reason age gaps are potentially unhealthy in reality is because of the power imbalance granted by the difference in maturity between the partners--and as Sarcastic Chorus said, Willow is absolutely the more mature of the two. She's the one who's had a fairly well-adjusted childhood that Hunter lacked. This 16-year-old is not at all in a position of power over his younger partner as a result of his age.
@CollinMcLean Жыл бұрын
@@peeblekitty5780 That and power imbalances due to age don't seem to be a major thing in this universe. A 16 year old in our world has a drivers license and employment opportunities which could create a power imbalance between a 16 and 14 year old. Not saying it's outright bad but depending on the context can be seen as suspicious. But in the Boiling Isles there doesn't seem to be much of a social difference between being 16 or 14 so that power imbalance doesn't seem to exist to begin with as far as we can tell.

It would have worked a lot better if Huntlow had time to organically transition from platonic buddies, to small crushes, to romance. I understand the show didn't have time, which is why I think it would've been better off not trying to cram in a third romance to begin with. I think I’m only realizing this now (and I’m normally not the type of person to dwell on this topic) but The Owl House has probably one of the actual best female representations I’ve seen in….anything! Luz: A Latina and canonically BISEXUAL(not gay, bisexual) female lead with a strong character arc throughout the series who’s sexuality and race aren’t treated like as a character plot point. Amity: Luzs rival turned love interest who also has a strong character arc that isn’t treated like the generic gay love interest shoehorned into a Disney property as representation check list Lumity: an actual respectful LGBT couple that again doesn’t feel like a representation check list(that actually lasts longer than a scene and a half) Willow: a plus sized nerdy girl that could’ve easily been just the token plus sized comic relief best friend/sidekick but as has character growth about her growing out of her shell, whose weight/size has never been treated like a punchline and has a genuinely cute ship with Hunter(which is mutual and canon❤🥰) who isn’t another comic relief character Active, prominent middle aged women in Eda, Lilith and Luzs mother Camilla whose age isn’t treated as a joke and know how to kick asses despite their ages. Camilla: said mother who isn’t dead or relegated to the background who actually contributes to the central characters in the third act and acts as mother figures for them by giving them love and sanctuary and again knows how to kick ass. Again I wouldn’t be dwelling on this if Hollywood and especially Disney hasn’t been on this female empowerment preachy high horse for the past couple of years

Hunter and Willow are both therapists for each other and I love that. This isn't just a one-sided savior situation, it's a mutual relationship that improves both ends. Willow introduces Hunter to an actual support group that he never got to have, and Hunter ensures Willow that she is fucking GREAT. They care about each other and helps one another through hardships they themselves had once faced, and that is beautiful.

Willow is the perfect example of not judging a fish on its ability to climb a tree. Her pairing with Hunter who was never appreciated in his original role was a perfect decision as she got to help someone else come out of the shell that she only recently learned to come out of herself. Lumity is amazing but Huntlow should not be overlooked as a great pairing.

Lets not forget that even after the flier derby incident Hunter and Willow were texting each other about casual things like their palismen. These two were building a friendship online away from everyone else, which is nice to see someone have their own other set of friends along with the main group. Long distance friendship is real friendship. And just watching them grow into their own person while developing a friendship and a high respect and trust with one another is great. The whole fact that Hunter could tell Illusion Willow wasn't her and Willow showing trust in him after he mentioned Gus' breathing technique after spending physical time once says alot. While Lumity has alot of on screen building, Huntlo I feel have alot of off screen long distance building. Also 2 years age difference? Really? Really? No one really cares about that difference prior to 16 and no one cares after you hit 21. Reminds me of my friend who was dating a guy who was 2 years older than her since she was 13. They were friends since she was 5. The second he hit 18 suddenly the it was like half the world was like "YOU CANT DATE!! You gotta dump him/her" Meanwhile they were like "We've been dating for 3 years what do you mean we can't be together anymore?????" Caused way more trauma either of them deserved or needed, two of them broke up due to stress. Both of them went through some garbage toxic relationships, and ended up back with each other anyway. And you know what at the wedding people were like "omg only 2 years difference? They're so close! Basically high school sweet hearts~ Its good when you're close in age one doesn't grow old too fast!"

As a queer person I love Lumity, but I love Huntlow more. Showing that a girl can be dominant, in charge and that the guy can be soft, express true emotions is a nice change. Willow hasn't lost anything by getting into a relationship with Hunter. She's still herself. He likes who she is and she likes who he is. Neither of them is interested in changing it. If you want a functional relationship, that has to be part of it. They save each other, one does not have the upper hand over the other. They know who they are. Moreso than they did at the beginning of the series, anyway, and when you've got people who are being their authentic selves, no one loses anything in that relationship. If anything, they gain so much more

i grew up as a fat girl and seeing those two get together would have meant everything to me back then; i know i would have imprinted on Willow, I could have related so much to her, as the kind sort of mom-friend (AND she wasn't skinny!), and then seeing her get together with conventionally attractive Hunter, a very Zuko-like character (and who didn't have a crush on Zuko when they were 10) would have really boosted my confidence. The dynamic too, that it leans more on the side of Hunter pining after Willow.. so good. Yeah fat girls were always the side character best friends in the shows I watched as a kid, and they'd never get a love interest. Seeing this now is honestly kind of healing.

If people are curious what he means by headcanons, before ASIAS the fandom had been domantily headcanoning hunter as either gay or aroace. So nearly all ships with hunter and female characters got ridiculed to heck (Emira being a slight exception because she was not luz, 16, and more conventionally attractive). But yeah, he was either shipped domantly with edric to the point it was basically treated as canon (you can still find traces of that even today) OR they considered him not to want romance or ever be attracted to anyone. So to say hunter being canonically attracted to girls threw that aspect through a loop was a understatement. Because those who liked either now feel like the show betrayed them despite never promising at any point to make hunter either one of those headcanons officially and not hiding the fact they were implying hunter was bi and liked willow. And then on top of THAT, while lesbian and aroace headcanons for willow existed before ASIAS, they became suspiciously more dominant after huntlow was implied. So some of these headcanons being pushed were being pushed out of spite for the ship existing, and some were from fans who were mad the show didn't make their headcanons canon for a "boring rushed straight romance ". And look, I get it can be upsetting to project yourself onto a character and enjoy a headcanon and then have it be disproven. But bash the creators for lying or betraying you? The toh team never promised these headcanons, they never hid the fact huntlow was being implied. I'm sorry if you saw something that didn't happen but the crew made it clear they planned huntlow for over 2 years, before we met hunter on the show. So this was always intended. No one was owed gay or aroace hunter and willow, and this should be a lesson in not letting yourself get too attached to headcanons, because its frustrating how people are lashing out and saying they want to die because the toh crew lied to them apparently by not making either gay or aroace and canceling the ship outright.

But with the episodes we have left, I'm hoping we see their relationship develop more, and hopefully have them becoming canon by the end.

I know people say that they don’t have enough screen time to be ‘valid’ but honestly, the small ways that the show displays their likenesses and characteristics as well as how they sort of naturally grow closer without needing any Big Defining Moments makes them so soft and easy to imagine growing into an even sturdier relationship. The fact they both provide the support the other needs, whether it’s Willow encouraging Hunter to be his own person, or Hunter making sure Willow knows she doesn’t always have to be strong (I mean…look how complimentary they are when fighting, not to mention what he said in For the Future) and yk I’ve rambled enough, I hope they can get another pinky hold in the finale my expectations are low but what a good ship.

@@cajunking5987 "He was way better for Hunter"? Oh my god I nearly want to apologize for the response I'm giving. Here's my take on it. 1: Gus and Hunter DO have a bit in common, from the prodigy label they dealt with to the problems with being used, but these similarities are more or less superficial compared to the Huntlow similarities. Gus dealt with the label of prodigy in a literal way and was insecure because people used him for it while simultaneously making him stress over not meeting the expectations. Hunter was used in a literal way, while his expectation stress was more rooted in an understandable and accurate fear of being replaced. Gus and Hunter both felt like they had to earn their places and meet expectations but while Hunter accepted this as long as he could survive (Meaning it was something that began to disappear after leaving Belos), the problems it caused Gus were crucial to his arc, meaning that while their situations look similar on paper, only the self doubt was a real "Shared trauma" bonding point. 2: While their bonding moments are obviously comparable to Huntlow's, the moment from labrynth runners wasn't about both of them. It was about Gus. It was a Gus episode, after all. It was Gus seeing part of himself in Hunter through the panic attack that allowed him to come to terms with his own issues by helping him, and being the "Reliable one" when he always relied on Willow and later Luz. The moment was undoubtedly a bonding moment, but the point on Gus's side was him getting to come to terms with his emotions, and the point on Hunter's side was being able to rely on other people in general without being below them. Looking back from this perspective, I can see why people complain about the way they handled Gus's character because the episodes featuring him weren't exactly about him specifically, but it's still better than they did to Luz. From the start, Willow and Hunters similarities were shown to be real and allowed for moments of bonding that were crucial to both characters, most perfectly shown with the "Half a witch" lines from them both, and the way they each reacted to the other saying it. It was there since they met and perfectly connected with their arcs. Gus and Hunter didn't formerly meet until Labrynth runners and their relationship was obviously meant to be a brotherly one (With Gus being the older brother).

There's a lot of parallels between huntlow and lumity. Both started out subtle, with one blushing after the other hugged them, hunter continuously blushing whenever Willow does something for him the way Amity was always blushing when Luz was around, the eventual mutual blushing after Amity comes in like a bad ass to save Luz the same as when Hunter caught Willow, and finally, a confession of emotions without explicitly saying it. Also the first couply thing they both do together is hold hands, which is so wholesome!

I am one of those nutcases who crack shipped this after Hunting Palismen aired, happily staying in my own lane and rolling my eyes at the haters and never expecting Hunter and Willow to ever actually even TALK in canon, let alone become a couple, and to be so well handled despite the limited time they had to work them in. To say the last few months has been a roller coaster would be an understatement. A lot of the hate this couple gets really is rooted in a mixture of fatphobia and biphobia, I've noticed. Despite Willow and Hunter getting little winking hints at their sexualities (Willow repeatedly being surrounded by pansexual pride colors, and Hunter even sporting a bisexual pride rainbow in TTT) people get angry about a m/f ship getting ANY attention from the writers, even as little as Huntlow gets comparatively speaking. And a lot of comments about how people just don't think Willow needs to be in a relationship at all leave a bad taste in my mouth despite me being Aro/Ace. No one NEEDS to be in a relationship. But if two people are attracted to one another and interested in having one, then great! And the salty comments about Hunter taking screen time away from Willow and Gus REALLY drive me up the wall, since Hunter BUILT UP Willow and Gus in the episodes he shared with them, highlighting what makes them so great and leading to the fandom to appreciate both of them more. That's what makes the bond between the Emerald Trio so satisfying to watch. If you want to look at a character who ACTUALLY overshadows them, then look at Amity. There is a twisted irony in Understanding Willow being titled the way it was, when the true purpose of the episode was Excusing Amity. Willow had NO VOICE for the majority of the episode, and instead Amity was the one who was there explaining Willow TO Luz and the audience, despite not having been friends with her for nearly a decade by that point. And poor Gus REALLY got screwed over in the journey to justify Amity being the one sent into Willow's mind with Luz. Can you really see the Gus we've gotten to know in Season 2 + 3 being more worried about getting a good grade on a paper than the fact that SOMEONE SET WILLOW'S BRAIN ON FIRE AND SHE COULD POTENTIALLY DIE? And that trend continued in Through the Looking Glass Ruins, where Gus FINALLY got some time in the spotlight only to have Amity steal the attention from him by going on a library date with Luz, changing her hair, and kissing Luz on the cheek. And all of this is on top of Amity getting her OWN episodes where Gus and Willow are not present. And yet hardly anyone complains about the imbalance of attention Amity gets, comparatively speaking. Hunter might've gotten a lot of love from the fandom, but he also had far fewer episodes dedicated to his character arc, so they made the most of what little time they had to rehabilitate him.

am I crazy or what, I can't see how this is even a crack ship, even back when they barely interacted. I've found my people! I was also thinking they'd make a cute couple and would have good chemistry. Hunter with his fake bravado and Willow being kind and nonjudgmental, looking right past it lol. I had my fingers crossed that they would meet. And then Dana and the crew went and actually wrote it even better than I imagined. The hate they got (and still do) was sadly something I'd seen in fandom places like My Hero Academia. Uraraka x Bakugou was strangely hated. And the only reason I could come up with was because it was a straight relationship. The rude comments fanart of the two would receive, somehow construing the relationship as being abusive? Because of how aggressive Bakugou is, but then shipping BakuDeku in the next breath. As someone who shipped both, it was incredibly frustrating to see. The hate Huntlow receives pisses me off to no end. I get disliking the boring, typical m/f romances, but Huntlow is nothing like those? There's no toxic possessiveness, just great chemistry. There's no stereotypical gendered behavior, Willow is allowed to be strong and they get to save each other. They understand and support each other. They don't need to be in a relationship to be interesting, they stand perfectly well on their own. And that's why they're relationship is so good.

I absolutely died when I watched their hand-holding scene. I think the main thing is that it's a straight ship, and people are worried it'll overshadow Lumity or something (which it never will because Lumity is amazing and Luz is the main character). Listen. Straight ships are not inherently bad. If done right, they can be amazing. I REALLY wish they had more time to develop everything, but it's just because they're trying to squish an entire season of content into 3 episodes. Like when that word gets brought up I tend to think of pairs that have a bit of a heavy amount of toxic behavior like Makorra or Starco and/or pushes the envelope of enemies to lovers a bit too much like Catradora. Huntlow is a tad rushed sure considering the state the show found itself in but it's a rather healthy/fluffy dynamic between two characters with some mental and self-esteem issues that always support each other. I don't think much about it really stands out as an issue with it. Only noteworthy thing is it being an M/F presenting ship in a heavily focused LGBT-centric show.

Huntlow works because they're each able to naturally give the other what the other needs, largely because they've been there themselves. Hunter grew up thinking you have to earn the right to have value. Willow consistently demonstrates that he has value no matter what he does. Willow has grown up with constant insecurity and fear over being viewed as weak. Hunter, no matter what the circumstance, always defers to Willow as a leader. Huntlow works because they make each other feel truly Seen. They're able to relate to each others' struggles on a much more personal level than their friends can. It's not just about being called "half-a-witch". Even by FtF.... Willow having a crisis because she thinks she doesn't know what to say to help her friends. Hunter explicitly saying "I don't know what to say to help my friends". Hunter's line to Willow about "you've been holding in a lot, haven't you?" -- Hunter has spent the whole episode holding in his own feelings about missing Flapjack in the same way that Willow was holding in her feelings about missing her dads. They just constantly in sync emotionally and just _get each other._
@lulu7.765 Жыл бұрын
I think that there may be something more to the Huntlow hate than just the ship, for what I have seen there seems to be a passive-aggressive dislike of Willow. People give many reasons for it, the main one being "she's just not well develop", or "her development feels forced", but that is BS Would she be better if she had gotten to have more screen time?, yes, but there are plenty of characters in shows that could have used more screen time and yet they don't get this treatment Part of me kind of fears that this comes from a not explicitly dislike of plus sized characters, cause the other reasons people give to actively dislike Willow could be said about other characters that don't receive the hate that she does

Something I DONT see pointed out enough is that moment Hunter figures out Willow isn’t really Willow in 2x18. Amity spends the whole episode trying to protect Willow and underestimating her, and the SECOND Willow shows signs of being scared of the illusions, Hunter knows immediately that it can’t be her. It makes sense, because Hunter has ONLY ever known her as the strongest plant witch in Hexside, maybe even the whole boiling isles, but that juxtaposition between him and Amity is just so lovely.

A lot of f/m couples in media follow this formula: - Male character is irresponsible, strong, dumb, falls for literally every woman he sees. - Female character is responsible, smart, weak, obsessed with their image, and seems to tolerate their partner because reasons. The owl house taking a break from this and giving both characters smarts and not making the male character the strong one, or the female character the obsessive one for once was indeed very refreshing.

Honestly, when I first saw the hints of Willow and Hunter, I disliked it because Willow could have taken a backseat and I really liked where she was going, so I was really relieved when it didn't go where I feared it would go. I'm satisfied where their relationship is heading now though! Even, if they go the opposite route and pull a straightbait on us, I enjoyed it. My boy Gus though, clawing and screaming for screen time 😫, my man needs a cool fight scene or two in the last episode or something, I swear. Lumity the power couple rages on as we head into the finals. The trans Hunter headcanons, I must admit, was crack that wrapped around to fact after I saw a Tumblr post and it started to make sense. I don't think I'll ever be able to think about it the same again, lol. Other headcanons? I feel like Hunter tried to take up gardening to connect more with Willow in the human realm, but failed so miserably that he's only allowed to have a cactus that he waters with his tears. It's constantly overwatered. As you said, he's basically the dictionary definition of traumatized.
@segevstormlord3713 Жыл бұрын
One thing that I think is also very crucial in the moment where Willow is at her lowest and Hunter goes yellow to pull her out of it... Willow has been sublimating her problems to try to be there for everyone else. Hunter has been focused on "fixing" the problems he feels responsible for and ignoring everyone's emotional needs. When Hunter really is able to come to grips with his own feelings of grief and other sorrows is when he lets go of thinking about it as being about _him._ When he realizes _that Willow needs him._ Yes, Willow likes being the one people rely on, and it's been good for Hunter, in particular, that she takes on that role, but Hunter needs to also learn the next step beyond considering whether his actions are right and what he really wants to be is truly thinking of others. He shows this many times, but it's when he focuses on supporting Willow, on being the one SHE can rely on, on cherishing her for being important to him, that he's able to let himself be vulnerable enough to show her that he hurts but also that she and the others are what he is leaning on. And realizing that Hunter will let her in so she can unload on him, that she's valued because she's herself, not just because she's a crutch to lean on, that lets her open up about her own problems and accept help dealing with them. More to the point: It's when they stop trying to be isolated islands that will weather the storm alone, but instead turn to supporting each other, that they are, themselves, able to lay down their burdens to a degree.

It's super simple too and honestly a perfect background ship and I genuinely love Hunter and Willow so much as individual characters, especially being side characters I think they compliment each other very well ESPECIALLY as a background couple, and they work even with the unfortunately rushed plot line- it's not unnecessary or over the top or pushed or forced or rushed so I really don't understand WHY Huntlow gets SO MUCH HATE!

I used to think hunter was to traumatised to really involve himself in romance. Anyway since the time skip in thanks to them he really developed and recovered and although he lost flapjack (and y know kinda got possessed by his evil emperor uncle/brother) he was stronger for it; he didn’t cower and even stood up to Belos (evil emperor uncle in question) and recently in for the future he really begins to trust and (dare I say it) love willow. I’ve come to love this ship and I really think it adds to the show overall

something i love abt their friendship/the ship in general is that they understand each other. the whole “half-a-witch” thing, they’ve both been through, so they can comfort each other and tell them that it isn’t true. i also love how protective they are both over each other. it’s so cute!

Personally, I love Huntlow because it shows a character who is completely and totally damaged and majourly fucked up, and showing that he's still deserving of romantic love, the same as anyone else. He's not too broken to be loved.
