I agree the base rzr transmission low gear is hardly any different than high. Seems like they should all atleast be geared like a highlifter. And the highlifter another 27% above that. Great video todd. Your rollers working great in my 16 xp1k hle

Great video, as usual, Todd. Here are a couple of thoughts to add to your video. First, you indicated that you didn't know of a reason for a 15% portal reduction. Here's one: if you don't have the ability to have a "dedicated" machine to rock crawl only or to mud only, etc, you could do a trans gear reduction to get to where you want to be off the rocks or mud and then add the 15% portals that both reduce the gearing and give you additional clearance to clear rocks, get in deeper mud, or to add larger tires. That way, if you were inclined to wrench your machine to take off portals when desired, you could have the best of both worlds in one machine. This isn't a great solution for a lot of riders. But, it does provide one answer to the "why?" question. Next, another observation around portals is how heavy they are. They definitely increase clearance and take off stress on the system (diffs, axles, trans, etc) better than a clutch kit or trans reduction, but the added weight of each portal at each wheel is significant and "can" significantly affect "nimble" performance. I'm not saying one is better than another. Just something additional to consider when looking to alter your machine for your particular style of riding, budget, or know-how.
@spidermonkeymoto29705 жыл бұрын
I have a 4" 15% 3rd gen portal setup on my car. I've also done gear reduction in the trans to achieve a super low low gear for rock crawling. I have a second hub setup essentially as a "kit" and I can hack my portals off and swapped to regular hubs in 2 hours. I prefer to do this for bigger Dune trips. But if I'm going to the dunes just for a day I will run my portals which is the advantage of having the 15% reduction. I feel it has a reasonable and efficient trade-off

I know this is an older video but i follow your info a lot and plan on trying your belt soon. I have a 2016 S900 with 30 inch mud tires right now and they do ok with my motherclutcher primary and secondary with round rollers. If i go up to 33s and bigger wheels would i be better with portals or a reduction? We ride trails and the occasional mud hole in south Louisiana.
@Hunterworks10 ай бұрын
Not sure, the MC clutches are so hit and miss. Anything larger you really should consider gear reduction

Not in my opinion. They are not that good for that. Small gear box with a small amount of oil that gets hot.

I just bought a 2021 Ranger Crew Ultimate TrailBoss. Will be mainly dirt road pave road and some hwy speed. Would like smoother starts and lower rpm for hwy and dirt road riding. What do I need to do? Oh, it only has 25 miles on it. The original owner never drove it obviously, he bought it in april of 2021.......still needs inital breakin process which I am currently doing. Thanks, Tony K
@Hunterworks2 жыл бұрын
Assuming this is a bone stock unit you can't lower the rpm, they pretty low now. You can try out belt it is thicker so it grabs better for sure on it

I don't realy care to go over 60mph would rather be able to climb rocks .. my question is with gear reduction in the trany will that stress all my moving parts vs having the reduction at the wheel ..

New to the bigger tire area... have a 2020 ranger crew 1000premium.. 26 inch stock tires..wanting to add 30 inch tires...thinking maxxis carnivores.... normal ride in high gear on typically hard pack dirt roads with ocassional mud..no deep mud riding. What would you recommend? Thank you
@Hunterworks5 жыл бұрын
You might get away with nothing, but those tires on a crew if you use all four seats is really gonna drop rpm and lose power. So ideally some kind of reduction

I know this is an older video but I have heard you make a comment in a lot of your videos, fast rider. What, in your opinion, type of speeds are you considering fast? I trail ride 30-40 about half the time and the other half of the time is half those speeds and a little mud play with some hilly stuff. I just put on some 30's, and have the belt from you all, on my 20 900 s. Would a clutch kit be beneficial in that sense?
@Hunterworks3 жыл бұрын
Yes it would, you are a faster rider, slower means low range mostly
