My new friend Tytan had the day off school so I chose that opportunity to further his education as a bowhunter by watching him shoot his bow and then setting up a stand for a quick hunt near his house. My goal is to help him understand the process of bowhunting from tree stands, with a very large emphasis on safety. Though it took me a long time to get the stands set up, we had a fun hunt and even had a buck come within bow range.

Bill is the perfect example of what a real outdoorsman should strive for. Knowledgeable, ethical and he gladly shares that information with others who aren’t to his level yet. A “tip of the cap” to you, Bill.

Bill I truly believe you have one of the most informative & down to earth channels on KZbin. You pose as a mentor not just to Titan & Jordan, but your entire audience. Thanks for everything you do Bill!

I need to move to Iowa so Bill can teach ME how to hunt! Hopefully that kid realizes the incredible opportunity he has! He's going to be light years ahead from how many of us had to start and learn. Good for him!

Bill, This is great you mentoring Titan. To me nothing would be better to be a kid living on a farm in Iowa and having a Legend deer hunter mentoring me. As I stated a while back, I am going to be hunting Zone 6 in Iowa this year for the first time after 6 years of applying. I hope to see some good deer and hopefully get lucky.

Yes sir. The kid couldn’t ask for a better coach. And yes. Safety first. And I think that young man could pass as a teenage Bill Winke!! May the Lord bless him with a great deer and safe hunting. Luke 9:62

I waited till the end and this time Titan got to say he dreams big! When I was coaching the boys in baseball I told them they had to dream of making the spectacular catch in their head before they would ever make it on the field. The same concept as dreaming big. I think it's really important for youngsters.

Nice video. Cedar trees are the best to hunt out of. Good cover, and I'll rub some of the green part of the branches for cover scent. Perfect for a new hunter, in my opinion. A lot of land managers want to "Lorax" all the cedars, but I like to keep some on my property and manage them to keep them in check and add diversity. They do provide some benefits but can easily overrun an area if left untouched and destroy a property.

I use my tree tether to hold my stand until i have it strapped in, then i unhook the stand and fasten the tether to myself before i step onto the stand.I have always used a linemans belt i had one from my job being a high steel painter all the way back in the eighties. But adding the tree tether to go along with the linemans belt made things way more safe and efficient .

I read your blog a few years ago about acquiring and selling your dream farm. The story was to be continued, you couldn’t find a farm and bought commercial real estate. Did you ever write about finding this farm?

Darn if I would have waited putting up my stand last night would have been much easier! I agree with you Bill it’s a matter of when we fall not if. I always wear my lifeline when hunting and use a linesman rope when hanging a stand. Sometimes I’m annoyed it gets in the way but someday I’ll be glad I have it!

Bill, curious if you've ever tried these hunting saddles I keep seeing people talk about on KZbin. Are they any quicker and/or safer to put up than a tree stand? I primarily hunt the ground for bow and muzzleloader, but have been curious about saddles.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 17 сағат бұрын
Brent, I had a saddle way back in 1999. They aren't new. I didn't use them then because I wanted to be set up in advance. I am sure if I had been hunting public land I definitely would have been using one back then. I am sure there are other tradeoffs, but on private land, I sure do like the fact that my stands are already there so I can sneak into them quietly in the mornings. Good luck.

GOOD LORD but I hope this young man realizes how luckey he is to have a supremely experience bowhunter teaching him I had literally no one to teach me anything when I started in the mid 1980"s I was the only member of my family that hunted I look back now and are astonished how unbelievably fortunate I was I never got serious injured while treestand hunting because I use to hunt at least 12 screw in steps high often 14 and never once wore a safety harnes for the first 15 years I hunted Had as close of a call as you can get to almost taking a 20' fall but managed to not fall and walk away with no serious injuries Never hunted again without a FBH
