Cut your fuel line and install one of Briggs small doughnut shaped fuel filters. It will stop small garbage that plugs your carb from happening hence the surging sound or not running. Change the filter each season.

As always good advice. 👍 My Qualcast Suffolk Punch mower had the same hunting/rough idle problem and has the brass bowl bolt jet, but I identified a slightly different fix that may also be worth checking before reaching for the finger drill. Mine has the through hole near the head of the brass bowl bolt as shown in the video, however when I examined the nut with my magnifying glass I found another absolutely tiny hole right near the very end of the threads. It was blocked. I gave it a poke with my smallest gas jet cleaner file (which only just went in) and it cleared the blockage and completely cured the hunting problem. This extra hole was so small I could barely see it without magnification.

@@benc2722 Tecumseh engine and Tecumseh Carb. I had to clean the holes out in the brass bowl bolt and the main jet this week as over the winter the fuel had slightly jellified and it has been cutting out on me. I paid special attention to the super small hole at the end of the brass bolt threads as well as the main through hole near the brass bolt head. I also gave the main jet a clean with the gas jet cleaner. All is now well again. 👍

Thanks for posting! Thought I'd give one last go at fixing my old Honda. The equivalent 'nut' appeared to be inside once I'd removed the bowl, holding in place the main nozzle. Anyway, gave it a really good clean out with micro drills and widened it a little. Running a dream now and hope to get another few years out of it. Thanks again!

Hey mick.... Trick to getting that bowl nut on... Put fiberglass or even some paper towl inside the socket so it holds the nut up but dosent sink down into the socket... Also can try " flushing the carb by taking off air cleaner and run high rpm and covering the intake hole at intervials " sucks the gas right thru...

Exactly the same technique as endodontics ( root canal treatment ). Dentists now throw out their nickel titanium super flexible hand files after every use.... they are tapered tho, but cut off the taper and you have a set for free ( if you know a friendly dentist!! ) You can also get really thin welding rod cleaners that are not tapered that are also used for adjusting and filing guitar nut slots

Hi Mick. Thank you for this one. I had a late 2016 quantum powered Viking in for poor running. Obviously carb. Stripped and cleaned manually. Not much better. Stripped again. Gave it an hour in the ultrasonic cleaner and manually cleaned it again with carb cleaner compressed air, jet files etc. Still not much better, until it warmed up. Tried your fix. Just using jet files to remove some material. Now perfect. Never known a quantum do that. Just wondering if late models have finer main jet for emission requirements? Only thing I can think of? Hi Mike, can you please help. B&S 450E plastic carb engine on a 18 month old Hayter 41 Auto drive. Slow starting whatever I do 3 pumps 4 pumps on the red ( hole in the middle plunger). It does start on pull 4 no black smoke and then runs fine starting every time when warm. Dealer has never come across this issue thinks its a dirty carb I don't see this as it runs great when warm. So first please explain (what does the red plunger do) because I don't see, or hear it squirting like the old side valve BS engine. Also what is the white plastic barb on the side of the carb for, looks like it should not be there. Regards Dave Porter

Hi Mick. I’m new to small engines but have an engineering back round. Would it be possible to pick your brains. As I have an old hayter harrier 48 I have given it a right birthday but after retuning back to the customer it runs on choke and full throttle only for 60 to 70 secs can’t get it to idle. But before returning it it ran fine for a tank and a half. Carb has been cleaned multiple times. But can’t seem to source a new one. Could you help please. Kind regards John.

Hi. I have 2 quantum engines I'm working on. They run good for a minute then run kinda rough. New carbs have not made a difference. When it runs rough if you shake the machine it runs better. Will this fix this problem? They do idle good the problem is more at full throttle.

WHAT YOUR DOING IS WRONG, AND THAT IS GHEATING . THE REAL PROBLEM IS THE FLOAT AND NEEDLE , FOR LONGER USED OF MOWER , THE SEALING ROBBER ON THE FLOAT EXPAND CAUSING THE FUEL TO RUN LOW ON THE CARB. CHANGE THE RUBBER SEAT AND ITS DONE! WHAT YOU DID IS YOU OVERSIZED THE JET SO IT SUCK MORE FUEL!
