First established in the 1930s on the banks of the Rochor River, Sungei Road Market quickly became the biggest flea market where you could find cheap, old and strange items at a “steal”, giving it its nickname, the “Thieves’ Market. Three years after filming its last days before the market was demolished to make way for redevelopment, documentary-maker OKJ hunts down the old vendors and discovers a tale of struggle to find a new home. Can they pick up the pieces of the past and keep the memories and spirit of Singapore’s oldest and most infamous flea market alive?

I grew up in Hawaii and the Pearl City "Swap Meet" was the best thing ever. We didn't call them flea markets, we called them "swap meets". I'm not sure if the Pearl City one is still there, but there's one at the Aloha Stadium still.

OKJ's spirit and effort in filming and documenting the 'Thief's Market' is admirable. It's sad to see the vendors being split up in different locations in Singapore and obviously not doing as well as before. Was thinking that if they can all be relocated to Haw Par Villa, it will be great. There is plenty of space there. Most importantly, there is this similar element of history and nostalgia. HPV, currently under renovation, will certainly get a boost from increased patronage with the 'Thief's Market" and vice versa. Marry the 2 together and it's a win-win situation. The MRT station is nearby. Add a food center in the vicinity and the venue should be successful. If the idea is feasible, hopefully somebody will take it further.

The downfall of Sungei road "thieves market" in 2017 is the decison of "revemping" up the image of Singapore. To get rid of the reminesence of our third world past and focus on the first world nation we aspire to be. However, this loss is a loss of a culture of a generation.. "thieves market" would be a byword that we could only have fond memories of. Just like the kampongs, are we just simply going to erase our past just because of the status quo of development?

Its pretty sad IMO. One side they are removing heritage and culture, then they attempt "rebuild" them artificially. What is the point. This is the same how they are treating the nature here in Singapore...

Why don’t the government let them stay for free coz this is our heritage and history needs to be preserved... and wouldn’t it be better if the Govt find a big space to let them do business and let the younger generation experience what their father and grand father enjoyed and see what’s the past was like... I’m sure Singaporeans will come and see and shop... it’s time for a revival I say....

I totally agree with you. This kind of shop are really helpfull. I love to self repair my stuff and always find the items in those kind of shops. Now I have to turn to shopping online but cant find feeling like seeing items in person.

Very sad that they took this away and didn’t make a new place to move them. I found Singapour to be very clean and everything perfect but no soul no energy. I wish this was there when I visited this would have given the place character and charm. Also, I hope you don’t mind me saying this but you are a handsome man.
