You can also go and ask around at the McDonalds or even at the Dairy Queen for fry boxes! Most of the time they will give them out if you say you're moving! My friend is a Manager here in Ontario and she does it all the time

I don't know if these exist in Canada but liquor/alcohol stores are great for finding good cardboard boxes. That's where my family got ours when we moved. The boxes are very thick and some even have dividers in them.

This is my personal opinion, but I'd start with a set of grays, specifically a medium tone, a light tone, and a dark tone, for shading purposes. Plus, grayscale images almost always look good
