Hunting for Harpoceras in Sandsend

Andrew Cuff - Fossils

Күн бұрын

After about 5 months, I return to Sandsend, just north of Whitby, Yorkshire. Well known for its fossils, Sandsend is often heavily picked over by avid collectors, but after a week of rain and big seas there was a chance to find something special.
I come hunting a type of ammonite known as Harpoceras (the ribs look harp shaped), and Sandsend is the place for them on the coast. Obviously we collect whatever goodies we find, but I wanted to improve upon my 1 little Harpoceras from my collection.
Do I get lucky.... boy do I! Come along and enjoy the finds!

That double Harpo has great potential, look forward to the prep video on that one. A trip down Somerset way probably in order to find some limestone Harpos from the Junction Bed to compare and contrast.

It is definitely on the list of things to do. I am hoping to get down to have a poke around later this year as I also want to get some Cadoceras as well!

Great stuff!! It was lovely morning that day indeed. I bumped into you as you were making your way back, bet those steps up were a struggle! I too found a harpo within 15 minutes of getting down on to the beach and it's my first ever. It is complete and looks absolutely stunning. Found some other nice bits but that harpo made the trip worthwile alone!

@@JROBC80I'm really happy to hear yours is a stunner. Don't know if you are on the Facebook groups (Yorkshire fossil hunters or fossil finds from Whitby area). Otherwise feel free to drop a pic to my email arcuff @ outlook . com (spaces all removed). I'm still awaiting mine back from prep. The first, big one doesn't look promising but we will see.

What a days collecting that was, im well chuffed for you 🙂👍i cant believe how many harpoceras you collected and they potentially look like really good ones to. Was this the sunday just gone??? Im Just asking because i was around the corner at kettleness and runswick and it rained all morning, was miserable but collected my first teni so well chuffed lol. I look forward to march/ April to see how the harpos turn out especially that double, i hope your well recovered after that climb but well worth it, cheers for the video, take care mate.

Saturday just gone. Went between all the rain as it looked very treacherous through the stream on both Friday and Sunday. It was a silly day for Harpos... one area about 50m size and they were all there. I assume all freshly (re)exposed after the heavy seas and I was the lucky one to find the area first. Thankfully recovered quickly after the hike. I assume all the Ravenscar training has helped! Glad you had a good hunt on Sunday. I'm hoping to get out on Saturday again this week and deciding where to go and Runswick is one of the options. See what the weather does!

@@dinoskool yes all the training videos helped alot thankyou Andrew🙂, ive just sent the 2 grammoceras and teni in for prep so I hope they turn out well, yes you were at the right place at the right time which helps but you still have to spot them eh mate, my first time at runswick sunday and the rivers you had to cross that ran over the beach 3 of them as I remember were running really well, you had to be very careful, was worth it as always as I got a new species for the collection. I was thinking about tomorrow or friday for another run up but I'll see how things go, if the other half likes the flowers i got her and the meal I'm cooking tonight I might just get the green light to go fossiling 🤣👍, cheers again mate, take care.
