Nashville, Tennessee is filling fast with mid-century modern collectors, and new stores are springing up devoted to vintage everything-clothes, studio pottery, designer furniture and fun, fab house decor! We've been anxious to see East Nashville Vintage Market ever since Laura Caldwell ‪@leftcoastrevivals‬ shopped here, and we have just a quick minute to try to find a bargain in a shop full of high-end collectibles.
This store has become a mecca for MCM wonderments, and it shows in some really great furniture-a designer Danish sideboard, a cute and scarce Witco frog ottoman, 1940s art deco side chairs-but there's so much more! A wall of brass accent pieces gives us pause to talk about what is good and what is better in brass, while a shelf of Frankoma Pottery demonstrates the difference between new and old. Fab 50s fiberglass lamps, some outrageous velvet paintings and 1930s Czech pottery that inspired later American pieces give us plenty to ponder.
But can we find anything our collectors like that we can afford to buy to flip? At the last minute, the answer is yes! Even in a high-end mall, there's always something that might have a different audience and different price point somewhere else. You'll have to watch to the end to see what we found, but it's headed with us to visit Laura at Rose City Vintage Market and her outdoor vendors in Portland, Oregon in mid-July!

Dad is gone now but he was a brass and copper restorer. He called it a lost art. He disliked imports. He collected American. I realized during a short visit that most of his pieces were utilitarian. 500 miles was the space between us so I missed out on his knowledge.

Good evening, George! I liked that round birdcage. Never seen purple Tupperware. I might have had to get that one. Those aeroplane props have always interested me...just nowhere to put one. That looked like a fun place to browse, but the prices seemed to be more for window shopping 🙃 Thanks for the take-along!

Yes, the brass was mostly Pakistani and Indian, but there was also Korean in there. My dad imported a lot of Korean brass in the 70s. The Korean is a little heavier than Indian or Pakistani. I didn’t see any Persian, which is always fine beautifully detailed.

I definitely don't fault you for any mistakes you make. You have a fantastic mind for so many of these niche makers that I'm always impressed. The few areas I concentrate my learning efforts on still have tons of blind spots that I either can't find good information about because of one reason or another, or have so many forms and variants within a subsection that memorizing them becomes a task all its own. You manage very well, and I'm always grateful for any and all of the information about lesser known makers. I often run into their work and know its from an era that my own knowledge touches on, but I have no ability to accurately research the origin. Watching your videos plants little seeds that I go back to quite often.

I have liked brass ever since I starting buying incense burners and small brass animals for my bedroom in the early 70s. I still like brass, but flying by the seat of my pants when it comes to picking it up, unless it's marked or stamped. So, i just buy what I like and can afford. I do, know English brass when I see it. I bought a set of barley twist candlesticks and a coffee table box with a big bumble bee finial that are marked English...$5 for CS, $4 for CTB at a yard sale. They are shinier than the other brass, and don't seem to patina as fast. Another great vid brother George! ✌

George, this video is fantastic. I appreciate the cut-aways and the details you provide about various pieces. It’s very helpful! The kitsch market has gone crazy and certain age groups are paying astronomical prices for some vintage items. I just can’t throw my money at it when there are good antiques that are beautifully crafted that I can buy instead.

Hi George! I always enjoy your shopping expeditions! I dont think you should always turn down things that have a tiny crack or slight damage tho TBH!!! As long as you're honest about the imperfection, alot of folks could care less...you get a deal and they get a good deal. For example that cute flamingo item for 12$...😊someone would have bought that for double what you paid and wouldnt care at all that it wasnt perfect. Was an adorable bathroom accessory esp for Florida. With age comes cracks, bruises wrinkles etc haha 😂😂😂 thats life!!!

I'm dubious of the accuracy of the Frank Willett label. The piece looks like SDW, Stoneware Designs West. I just went through a lot of riggamarole about the confusion between Raul Coronel's studio and SDW with a fella named Mike Hickman. This piece in the video @13:30 looks like Robert Maxwell.

East Nashville was never known as the place to shop.....unless you were flipping an old house 20 years ago. We lived in Belle Meade and my Grandparents would take me to Franklin with them to marvelous antique stores. She spent 56 years collecting her dining room set. Go to Franklin next time and take a hankie for the drooling!!!!

Damaged, painted, etc... I'd go 10 cents on the dollar, max. And that's retail; I wouldn't buy a damaged modern vase for resale unless it was incredibly special. Buy it to mess with myself, maybe. The phone book whatsit looked useful; every time someone loses their phone they wish they had number written down!
