Zach and Jake sit in the truck and watch a plains whitetail buck locked down with a doe as they discuss the nuances of hunting bucks in through what many consider the "Lockdown Phase" of the rut.

Great podcast! I just had a situation on Saturday where i made it seem as if i was a buck tending a doe in a marsh. I had a "satellite" buck run in but stayed 50yds out. Played cat and mouse with him for 2.5hrs chasing him back and forth while staying downwind. I actually never got eyes on him right until he finally came in at 7yds broadside with thick brush covering his vitals. Drew back but couldn't get a shot off and he busted me and ran away blowing, this time for good. It was a glorious defeat 😅. He was definitely no dinky buck either.

Great podcast guys - thank you. You’all know more about whitetails than I’ll ever know. I know you’re primarily archers - but I’m 65 and can’t pull a bow back anymore. I have found a love of trying to find deer in late season (December/ January) muzzleloader seasons. If you guys could do a podcast about finding bucks in that last season of the year I’d LOVE to hear what you have to say!

I would say that most dread lock down because the chances of seeing a buck on their feet is minimal. I agree with everything you said here. But key to what you are giving advice on is first laying eyes on a locked down buck.

Walked up on a doe this morning. She trotted off and I didn’t see anything else so I took a few more steps and a big buck stood up and trotted the other way. Tried grunting at him and he just walked off opposite of the doe.

Being aggressive is the right thing for this time of year. I looked out the kitchen window right around 3 pm and there was this monster standing next to a baited area I have. I never saw him before on any trail camera. I quickly got my stuff and went out. I saw him chasing does about 60 yards away and then he decided to come back to the bait where I put an arrow through his lungs. I may have never seen him again so I had to be aggressive!

Especially when they may be on to the next by tomorrow anyway! They seem to forget things quickly during this time of the year as well.

Hunting mid-November is my favorite time to deer hunt. But I am a public land hunter. Maybe for folks with large managed deer farms it's not as good as other times. It wouldn't bother me at all if everyone sat out "lock down".

I had a situation where a shooter was on a lockdown recently, and I was with in 60 yards . I grunt at him and rattled and I even doe bleat at him and the guy show interest, at the end I used a blow sneeze and got nothing. Eventually the doe took off and he ran after the doe and that was the end.

Here in Wisconsin the gun season runs right at the tail end of this lock down phase. What would hunting bucks look like for you guys during/after this pressure?

I would guess the majority of older, more experienced bucks hit heavy cover with does when the guns start going off. Our strategy stays about the same for the remainder of the season though. Keep moving trying to find where there is a lot of sign. When we have found hot spots on public land, even into January, we have found where bucks are still scraping and rubbing if there is a high concentration of deer. There are usually less high concentrations of deer on public during the later part of the season but they are still out there. They usually change year to year as well so we keep moving until we find them.

I hunt in a thicket with TONS of deer, scrapes everywhere literally dozens of scrapes across my whole ridge line. I can’t seem to see any buck this year. I’ve had does at 20 yards multiple times and never a buck with them, can’t get any deer to come to my grunt call, rattling hasn’t worked, nothing has worked.. I’m stumped!

I had an area like that which had scrape lines and giant community scrapes and rub lines all over the place in mid September of all times. Two big big bucks were using it. One was coming closer to daylight until he was just 20 minutes after dark. Then, everything disappeared. All the does, almost all of the dozen or so bucks, even the bears... they just ghosted the whole area. I correlated the disappearance with the early doe/bear muzzleloader and junior/ senior doe rifle season. The state forest decided to open up the gates to all the roads and the 3/4 mile walk in became a short drive over the mountain on a gravel road. I learned my lesson in the past, though, and went to an old hot spot and killed a pretty nice 9pt on the 8th downwind of doe bedding. That spot has come through two years in a row now.. Ended up being the coolest and best hunt of my life. Hopefully you can get on one! Good luck!

It's ok. It is still not 100 percent but they have been telling me at physical therapy that it will likely be a year after surgery (March 13th) before I am feeling back to normal. For some folks its longer. With that being said I am able to do pretty much everything I want to. I workout on it pretty aggressively at this point but it is still slowly catching up strength wise with the other leg. It's definitely still a factor while hunting too but it has helped me appreciate patience more than I have in the past.
