so at 42:10 the line is, 'Lead on, Macduff !" but the quote is, 'Lay on, MacDuff ! (And let no man cry, "Hold; Enough !!" ') Doubt Buchan made that mistake, but have never read that book -- have listened to others like 'Greenmantle' as radioplays, & the Wife read 'The 39 Steps' to me, the novel Alfred Hitchcock made a great film from ~ ~ ~

Difficult to know whether Buchan was making a mistake or not - because while you're right about the original text of Macbeth, the misquote 'lead on Macduff' was, perhaps still us, in common usage. Similarly, the expression 'all that glitters is not gold' is a misquote of Shakespeare's 'all that glisters is not gold' that has become fixed in popular use. I suspect you could fill a book with misquotes that have taken hold in everyday language like that...
