My grandfather lived in Launceston and collected a mountain of Huon pine and kept it when he later moved to Indented Head, Victoria. I remember the smell of the timber was so distinct. He built all of the windows for his home and stored piles of it in his shed. After he passed my parents sold the property but left all the timber behind not knowing it's value. Years later I visited my grandparents home and spoke with the new owner. He was a woodturner by trade as fate would have it. He told me it was like winning the lottery. For that he gave me a tiny ashtray to keep...... Tightarse! At least it went to someone who appreciated it's value.

My friend was saying that when he arrived in Tas in 95 he went for a camping trip down the west coast with some friends. On the way they stopped at a local sawmill to get some firewood. He was surprised that some of the 'firewood' was huon, so he kept some small pieces. He's just made me a mantel clock from one of those pieces. Lucky me.

This must be from the 70s. I can't imagine what a complete huon pine spinning wheel would be worth now. It looks beautiful.
