They definitely graded the tougher sections this year. It is sad, but it is a fire access road, so they have to keep it manageable. Great video.

Everyone I know that also lives in haywood county. Calls it hur-i-cun creek. The houses and cabins you pass going in are private property. There's another place a little further in also private, kind of hidden. There's a place on the left going in from i40 about a mile in. Been there allot. To anyone thinking of going, please pick up your trash. Keep our home beautiful. Been through there in a small toyota and a stock square body chevy. It'll make it, but like he says, it can be rough. Welcome to my backyard. Please keep it clean. If we don't, the forest service among others will eventually shut the road down, like they have alot of other places around the county.

The more I get out there in areas the less I like seeing them in videos. I don’t feel it helps them to remain open. High traffic = visibility = watchful eyes from groups that are looking to take them away from us.
@bryanglover12726 ай бұрын
Agreed. This is where unique forest service roads managed by the government (USFS) differ from Offroad parks. Hurricane Creek is nothing more than a liability and hassle for the FS.. generates no income and is a constant hassle with more and more out of towners coming to leave trash and destroy all the surrounding private property. The fact that there is private property on both sides of the road is the only reason the gates remain open to this day.. its always been under constant threat of closure and advertising it will only make it worse. It’s not Uhwarrie or some other government sponsored ORV/OHV park.. its a road and they’d love nothing more than to close that thorn in their side.

If you put it in Google maps, it does look like there is a way to get there from North of 40. However, it’s unclear if any of those roads, main or back, have taken damage from the storm.

I stay in sc not far from NC on 85. I am looking for a shop to help with my yj. A place I can put it in a shop and pay as work continues, not just all up front . It's a driver , not a complete over haul. I just want to replace stuff and upgrade it at the same time. Any suggestions.

Clemson 4Wheel Drive and Chris Durham Motorsports are the only two shops that come to mind in that area.

If we want to keep full access to forest service roads like Hurricane Creek we should stop publishing videos to a million people about them. It’s a road, not a trail, and its got gates at both ends that the forest service isn’t afraid to close due to idiots leaving trash and going off-road onto all the private property that exists on both sides of the road. Also - as a local - no one calls it “Hairican”

This idea that we should hide trails (or forest service roads) may seem like the correct way to preserve them, but history has shown that it isn't. When I started my editorial carrier in 2007 as the Feature Editor of Petersen's 4Wheel & Off-Road magazine, I learned that firsthand. The more exposure an area/trail has, the greater the importance it has to the off-road community as a whole. This equates to more resources that can be used to preserve the area. A road/trail that’s only used by a few is much more likely to be shut down with little to no resistance versus one that is frequented by many. I understand that exposure can also lead to the issues that you mentioned. However, if you look at why trails and forest service roads are shut down, it rarely has to do with a few bad stewards leaving trash behind or camping in spots they are not supposed to be. In terms of how to pronounce it, I just have to go with what I’ve been told by more than a few life-long residents of Western North Carolina.
@bryanglover12726 ай бұрын
@@DrivingLine Nah, that might work for a government sponsored OHV/ORV area (think Uhwarrie) but not for a Forest service rd in a national forest. Uhwarrie generates income and therefore resources for sustainability and maintenance, etc. Hurricane Creek has flirted with shut downs for many many years when high traffic results in trash and private property destruction. The more people you invite out to places like that the more destruction takes place. The government’s (USFS) answer in cases like this has always been closure vs. restoration/sustainability. They don’t have the resources or desire. The few local groups that have the ability to do cleanups can’t keep up during busy season with the trashy off-road tourist crowds.There’s already no shortage of out-of-town Gladiators on 37’s ripping up everybody’s private property like its some sort of Offroad park only to leave, go home and leave the area dealing with the consequences.

@bryanglover1272 as a local resident and avid user of similar fs roads I will not name, I completely agree. There are similar roads around me that have been closed due to overuse and abuse because there were/are no right of ways to private property. If hurricane didn't have this it would be closed and only opened for fire crews, maintenance and occasionally hunting as many others are. They also have to option of closing the gates and issuing keys to those who own property beyond the gate. The amount of beer cans and bottles I pick up from the woods next to these roads is staggering, granted it's mostly the utv and horse people, but definitely 4 wheelers too.
