Hurricane Florence, September 13th and 14th, 2018, Chris Collura Full Footage Archive

Very large and destructive waves impact North Topsail Beach (and North Carolina coastal areas) late in the day on September 13, 2018 as hurricane Florence lingers offshore. The hurricane generated large east and southeast swell waves during its long trip across the Atlantic Ocean and is about 100 miles offshore. The winds are from the north, and actually blowing side-offshore, against the breaking surf, causing spin-drift (back-spray) and a "gnarly" appearance to the 10 to 15 foot breakers. Tides are still above normal with storm surge and wave run-up causing damage to homes and severe beach erosion. Later the storm eye will move in just south of this area, and winds will be onshore and push even more water inland.

being a hurricane fanatic, I have been through my share of hurricanes here in coastal southeast North Carolina...Diana (1984); Bertha and Fran (1996); Bonnie (1998); Floyd (1999); Florence (2018); Isaias (2020, I think). Of all these storms, Fran and Florence caused me the most anxiety. Fran was 115 mph when she made landfall on Brunswick County. I evacuated to a storm shelter during that storm. the EYE went directly over us. It was an eerie experience. Florence somewhat easier to deal with. I didn't lose power until her EYE made landfall at Wrightsville Beach, but after that I was without power for 5 days. The slow movement of the storm made in more frightening as tons of rain fell on eastern North Carolina. I didn't experience bad flooding where I lived at the time, but I was definitely concerned. Florence was unique among hurricanes as it made landfall on North Carolina coming from and east-to-west direction rather than the usual south-to-north direction. Florence is still a storm a lot of people talk about here in southeast North Carolina.

Also, this is the first video that I've watched of Florence because my son did actually almost get extremely hurt because of his father not going quickly enough to a safe place . I do appreciate the footage

Fond memories of this beach. Used to come out here every summer to Roger's Bay and spend a week with my late mother, before she passed of cancer. Miss this place!

We had no power for 7 days, tons of friends and neighbors lost their homes been 3 yrs and I know families that are still working to get their homes repaired, and I know some that completely lost their homes just in my neighborhood alone. What you captured is great to show the power that these storms have. Should see what it did here up the road in Jacksonville. Schools were closed for over 55 days. My son's high school lost roofs on 2 buildings one of which was the cafeteria which they did not have use of till almost spring break, and they did not get the use of the other building till 2 years later which was the science, language and home econ building. Of course we know tornados came through here but officially since there was no power to document only on was recorded and that was on base.

This is the hurricane that my son's father nearly killed my son! He chose to stay in his flimsy a$$ trailer instead of going to a hotel I got for them! He finally decided to go when it got so bad that the wind was peeling back his roof ! This hurricane stayed around for days , so he checked out of the hotel the very next day after she hit NC instead of staying put until it was gone ! So around 3am the next day it got so bad he was begging me to find another hotel for them but until I could they went to a shelter, mind you he lives 5 minutes from emerald isle , so I was able to find probably the very last room in the area in J'ville, he finally decided to stay until Florence was gone for good . The hotel actually had power . Probably the only hotel well it was more like a motel but it was a roof with power and I was happy with that. I knew my son wouldn't suffer due to his father's negligence .

Just some advice... don't use the winch line as a pulling line thats how you break the drum that the winch line is on.. you need to keep a tow line to hook up and do pulls wirh your vehicles

Drivers in Jacksonville NC are far more dangerous than any hurricane. Rude to boot. That being said, Topsail is a very nice beach.

The timecode is meaningless, since it has zero to do with the actual time or elapsed time, but simply the time into the produced video. It's fake, only to present an air of authenticity to people who don't know better. Gimmicky and dumb. You should quit that BS going forward. The SCV watermark at the center of the screen is just obscene, especially since this is obviously a conglomeration, though I have seen worse. Only a few months after Florence, a Mormon Church group from North Carolina with a couple dozen people, who had experienced this storm, arrived in the Panama City area, and helped us with storm debris cleanup from Michael. They refused any kind of monetary compensation, though it was offered. Hey, the KZbin algorithm loves comments. I'm doing you a favor.

Storm is sign of God's little anger on Mankind on how greedy they are disturbing his works on Earth. If man continue irresponsibility as we do these days the GOD'S anger will be the end of Mankind and he have the power to do so and can substitute us to another type of creatures which will not distruct the life basic needs.
