I'm a few miles north of ya, in TN. It started raining with hail stones on Tuesday, and didn't let up until after the hurricane passed. The stormed blew over some very large trees on my land. Even though we had 8 to 9 inches of rain, we didn't see much flooding. The one thing to look for are arrowheads that will sit on top of sandbars. @EmM-zy2zu3 ай бұрын
With all due respect, how can you you say, "nobody expected this" ? I'm a couple thousand miles away and I watched the weather channel and I knew what was coming for Florida and up into the Appalachian mountains. And the low pressure system that parked itself over Western NC and E. Tenn presented a huge problem before this fast moving storm ran up the Appalachians.
@Stephens_offroad_and3 ай бұрын
@@EmM-zy2zuWere you really expecting flooding to this extent? Many of those creeks and rivers haven't seen that much water in recorded history. The Pigeon River in Newport, TN peaked at 30.55 feet on the USGS gauge. In early September that same creek was running at around 2.3 feet on that gauge. Its cubic feet per second measure was off of the scale that tops out at over 47,000 CFS. The NWS action stage is 6 feet and major flood stage is 12 feet there. The gauge on the French Broad River, also in Newport, surpassed its 84,900 CFS gauge limit and reached a maximum of 24.3 feet. From my own rough extrapolation based on the USGS graphs, close to 100,000 CFS wasn't impossible for the highest flow on it. In early September that one was at 1,000 CFS and 1.5 feet. For comparison, the average rafting trip through the Grand Canyon sees 8,000 to 15,000 CFS. Even the Colorado River is exceptional at 100,000 CFS, there are videos from when that happened in the Grand Canyon on KZbin. Newport is on the other side of the mountains from this video, but it was the same storm and that's where I happened to already have the official USGS data for.
