I think some of the only people who get a pass on "climbing things without fall safety" are people specifically trained to climb tall things. Like... i don't know... circus performers 😂

Except that most big tops aren't rated for gusts over 80km/hr and many struggle at much lower wind speeds than that (so would definitely struggle in hurricane conditions). They'd end up being a source of additional flying debris. Unfortunately I have been involved in the decision to call off shows in big tops and also to evacuate the areas adjacent to big tops when storms have hit festival sites.

@@deetoher Oh, I was just trying to make a joke. Obviously, the only correct way to waterproof a house is a giant umbrella. 😂

@xingcat I guessed as much. But unfortunately, many people don't know how leaky and prone to failure in high winds big tops can be. I have learned from past experience when having to explain why shows couldn't go on.

I used to live in an older house. One caution was that if your chimneys are no longer being used heating the house they will deteriorate rapidly and you will have a humidity problem, especially in basement areas. Dehumidifiers will help but if possible have for ex a fireplace in use or install a woodburning stove to keep your chimneys in good condition. Before you use them you have to inspect them, really important!

I live in the gulf coast of Florida, 25 miles north of Tampa. Being prepared for hurricane season is a way of life here. Have a Hurricane kit stocked, check and restock yearly, have an evacation plan in place, just in case, let family and friends know the plan. Lots and lots of rain, major flooding in many areas. Make sure you have flood insurance, its a separate policy, not included in house insurance. Good to see you secure the top of your chimney, hopefully that will be the answer to your wet areas. Moving right along on the rad installs. Good job!

Thank you for announcing the spider before showing it. I'm arachnophobic, so seeing spiders is helpful for exposure therapy...but not if they suddenly appear. I swear those little buggers would be less scary if they announced their presence
@cindabearr4 ай бұрын
Hello fellow arachnophobe! Just wanted to pop in and say that exposure therapy really does work for us! I'm no longer terrified of pictures, and can handle seeing them in person too, and happily, letting them live (in most instances). If they do pop out and scare me in my house, we have a little talk - I tell them, "Don't scare me, and don't get in my bed, and I won't kill you. We can live together if your just do that, and I won't squish you. Deal?" Fun aside: once in the middle of the night I went to use my bathroom, and when I flipped on the light, there was a jumping spider on the far wall. Well, ofc I screamed, but the spider got scared by me screaming and put it's front legs up, and I swear it was doing its own little "aghhhhhhh!"! It was so cute I that I actually felt bad and told it I was sorry! 😅🤣 Yep, progress is definitely possible for us. 😆
@expatpiskie4 ай бұрын
I've got to the point where I can just about cope if I see them coming. It's the ones that jump out unannounced that still freak me out. I live in a house that is about 110 years old so there are a lot. It's probably be just as well that we don't have venomous spiders naturally occurring here in the UK or I'd be even worse. As far as spiders in the bathroom are concerned I once walked in to find a huge one sitting in the bathtub. I asked #2 son to deal with it & his very unhelpful comment was that the spider was big enough to climb out by himself!

Thanks for mentioning the right way to have drip edge! I’ve had to insist on separating the drip edge from the wood to several “professional” roofers on both my house and my aunts house next door. Water can go against gravity due to capillary action and surface tension. It will follow the side of the house if it can!

After growing up in Michigan in tornado territory, my husband and I now live in Florida in the heart of hurricane territory. There's definitely some challenges to living in hurricane country (you don't want to know what we pay for homeowner's insurance, for instance - and what it takes to get it at all) but we both agree we'd rather live with hurricanes than tornadoes. As we always say, I can see the hurricanes coming and get out of the way if it is going to be a bad one! Our first ones were the legendary 2004 season where we got hit by three in 6 weeks - quite the introduction! Once you've done a few....you have the preparation drill down, you understand the meaning of the forecasts and local emergency announcements, and know where your personal line is for staying or getting out. Then it's serious business but not so scary.

Hey guys. The issue of leaking from that chimney may also be coming from lack of flashing as well. The flashing should be all the way around the chimney at the roof line/base of chimney. Most leakages at the chimneys is usually from faulty flashing and bad seal. Also, the 3-window cove should technically have a heater under each window otherwise that one you put in will run overtime to make up for the lack of heater under the 2 side windows. The house is coming along nicely. Cannot wait for you to get the moisture issue under control and heat in there to kill the mold old completely.

Not gonna lie ,if I had to deal with crawlspaces for the kitchen heater I wouldn't have bothered to install heat at all in there lol. We used to not bother heating our kitchen though, since it was a room we didn't use too often , so we were trying to save money by leaving it cold. I'm not sure, though, what your winters are like compared to ours. Our area typically has winter temps of 20F to 37F, with lows between 1F and 3F. But seems we hang out in the 20's as lows the last few years I also used to keep my downstairs (kitchen, living room, laundry) where we don't frequent as much, as cold as is safe (not so cold that pipes could burst, essentially). Before my parents moved in, we kept the downstairs at around 50/55F, using a separate heater in the bathroom to keep that room around 65F most of the time. The upstairs rooms all had their own individual electric baseboard heaters. So if I was spending time in my office, my bedroom heat was off (unless a cat was in there napping LOL) My parents can't handle such low temps, and their room is downstairs, so they have the heat set to 75F most of the winter. We tend to leave the upstairs door open and let residual heat go up the stairs from the toasty kitchen, which cuts down on how much electric heat we have to use upstairs :)

Hurricanes are just wet tornadoes! You're doing exactly what you should, by battening things down. As I'm sure you know from tornadoes, secure anything in the yard that can take flight, make sure you've got flashlights, batteries, fully charged phones and battery banks, and jugs of water and a cooler might help if you lose power for an extended time. But I'll bet you know all that already! You got this! I know it! (edited for grammar)

@@jlotoo850 considering they're in Nova Scotia, I think it's pretty safe to say it's definitely not a brown recluse, also looked way too big

That's a wolf spider and they are good to have around. They eat black widows.

That has to be the smallest wolf spider I have seen in a long time. The ones I have running around in my property are huge. Someone them look like they could be baby tarantulas. In the summer my boys like to go bug hunting at night. It's kinds cool to see the females running around with their babies on their back and see the eye shine of all the babies. Good spiders to have around. I read somewhere that they will eat black widows if they catch them. I'm not a big fan of spiders so I don't name them. Ironically when my great grandpa was a young man said they had a black widow that lived in their pump house. He called her Gertrude.😂 she lived there for several years. They had an arrangement where when ever he came into the pump house she had to be in her web. I personally would've noped out. I don't do spiders that have the potential to kill me. 😅 anyways another good video. Can't wait to see more of the house and happy go lucky Canelle.
