Starting in June, I got a little knot in my stomach. Then in July, it would grow a little. By the end of August, the little knot had grown to the size of a softball. Then in September and October, it felt like a football. Ugh. Finally in January I could finally start to relax. I don't miss hurricane season. There is some good holding near Beaufort, NC, a little way up the river. Lots of mud, so they use Danforth anchors attached to 20+ feet of "cheese cutter" steel cable. The Danforth slices through the mud and just keeps going down and the steel cable is thin and slices through the mud with no resistance. Attach a nice heavy nylon anchor rode and tie it off to a mooring float. At the end of the season, you can try to recover your Danforth anchors, but it may take a big construction barge and a super winch, and it is still probably never coming out. So cut off the steel rope and call it good.

It all about OPTIONS. Just think.... weighing anchor with a Cuba Libra in one hand and your foot on the winch up button. 😂👍🥃

Planetary overheating means more of these circular storms, and over a longer period than usual hurricane seasons. I always hid in the mangroves and tied off fore and aft using LONG ropes of nylon, to allow for storm surge, and I set lateral anchors and bridled them fore and aft as well as to my side cleats--which are not sufficiently strongly fixed to take a full on hurricane, hence the fore and aft bridle. I take down all canvas and stow solar panels below decks, I have storm shutters of half inch plywood which fit over my portlights to shield them from flying debris. I use sixty pounds Manson anchors--my boat was forty two feet long, and where I have ONLY anchors in a storm, I set either a tandem or Bahamian set all chain with a kellet. Good luck!!'

You really need to address the weakest link in your anchoring plan: the double-cleat in place of the bollard that broke at its base. Your anchor will really place the strain on the after cleat which is held in with two bolts. Even if they were Grade 9 bolts, the sideward strain on them would cause them to shear and your boat will end up being loose and aground somewhere or worse. Please have the original device welded and installed using Grade 8 or stronger bolts. Ideally, you would purchase a used Mechanical Windlass. It will provide greater capabilities, save your back & hands, and allow Kristen to perform that task.
