So thrilling to see how White's pieces, after several uncommon moves in the opening, were able to gain such an initiative - almost all of a sudden... Chess will never cease to amaze me... That was one brilliant attack! plus, I must finally admit it: GM Daniel King, I love your analyses. Your positional alertness is, to me, best shown when you ponder on the right words to describe those often underestimated nuances, such as here - that almost invisible, potential vulnerability of Black's kingside... Yes, both the very accurate commentares and expressive wording will often make for the most entertaining time throughout my day. (; Thank you so much, and all the best to you!

Fantastic game by Yangyi. I"m hoping a couple of new faces make it to next year's candidate's matches. It would nice to shake up the usual suspects and maybe even see a brand new opponent for Magnus to take on. :D

Daniel, it would be nice to have, at the end of the video, a quick recap of the situation: which players are qualified, how their games went, etc. Thanks for your amazing work!

Good old Harry the h pawn. Bet GM Simon Williams like this game. Great analysis GM King.

There's a cute zugzwang idea for White in the final position, since Black can't play Kg6 due to Bf8! and then d7! :)

Wow, what a game.. And to be played vs a 2770+ superGM too! Basically gave up two pawns for the attack, and even after queens traded off, the attack was still just as strong if not stronger! You never see such games like this in classical vs such strong opposition, even sacking one pawn is rare since being a pawn down is usually more than enough for GM to easily win.. Let alone two pawns.. But as they say, it takes two to tango, so gotta give nepo props for having the balls to take those two pawns. If he didn't, we wouldn't get to witness such an awesome attack by Yu. Lol. Go yu, good luck vs ding(?) in the semis, since I think Ding qualifies for candidates already based on his rating.

Long before AlphaZero, I remember Kasparov playing h4 (or h5 as black) remarkably often back in the day. As for Nepo, it's baffling how a player of his caliber could leave his King so bereft of defenders. After 14... Qa5, the Queen is still within hailing distance of the King. After 17... Qxa2, it's off to Siberia, but maybe it's justified. But 24... Ba5 is just bizarre, unless he somehow assumed that a Queenless attack would be harmless. If so, it was a poor assumption.

I really love your analysis Sir King! And I’ve never heard Nepo’s name pronounced like you said it! How many languages do you speak? Cheers

I watch this game a couple of times and I felt like nepo was careless at some point of the game it is like his mood change and start playing quickly just like if he underestimated his opponent or something . But as always great analysis mr king as usual.

what was Nepo thinking ? That queen trade was awful. It is simply saying please invade my army

Nepo is such a frustrating player. Incredible talent, but he is so flippant it's hard not to root against him.

He has a bad time management -- but in the opposite direction: he is not in time trouble very often; but he sometimes makes bad moves because he doesn't bother to think about the position.

I have heard 'Harry' refer to White's h-pawn -- anyone know if Black's h-pawn is called the same or something different?
@AartSnikkelbaard035 жыл бұрын
I think all h pawns are called Harry. We have Arry, Barry, Cedric, Derrick, Eddie, Freddie, Gary and Harry.
