Husband Risks His Wife's Pregnancy | Chicago Med

Dr. Manning and Dr. Halstead treat a husband and wife, but soon face an ethical dilemma when the husband tests positive for the Zika Virus and doesn't want to tell his wife even though he is a risk for his wife's pregnancy.

You can break confidentiality if it affects the life of someone else - if it causes damage to another person. And example would be if you were a GP and someone came in for the results of their STD test and it was positive, and they blatantly said that they would not tell their partners and continue to interact with other people without protection, it is a doctors duty to inform those people of the danger to prevent spread of infection.

As they mentioned in the actual show HIPAA can be worked around in the case that it could impact the health of another patient. However, Zika is so new to scientists that HIPAA didn’t make an exception, which is why you go to an infectious diseases control agency and apply for a case in which in this instance, the possibility of this mans inconclusive Zika test has the ability to affect another; his wife and unborn child.

I'm from Brazil and it's funny to see this reaction with Zika since we had an epidemic here. The chances of him passing it on to her and the virus actually damaging the neural development at this stage in pregnancy (she looks more than a couple months into it) would be extremely slim. The risk of mycrocephaly is associated mostly when the mom is the one infected in early stages of pregnancy
