In this part of the series I'll outline the different clutches, how to identify which oem top end you have and show the different pistons. At the end I'll show the different carburetor numbers and what that means.
thanks for watching

Tin man, I’m thinking a 200 series Q&A would finish this series perfectly where you take questions from people who watched this whole series and fill in any gaps or mid understandings. What a great service to the saw community!

Be aware that there are changes with the W number as well. I have multiple ZN13's with significantly different porting. As far as I have seen so far they go up to W11. That rabbit hole gets deep when you dive down it. The ZN11's seem to have been phased out by 84, but, as we know, the XP's came out mid 85, and there are porting changes that came with it and the 224 carb. On the 48mm cylinders, the 630 Super 2 runs a modern, 268 style piston. Don't forget the 272 HD filter either. If we include the Jonny's, we can't forget the 625 and 670 having their own, unique cylinders with intake boots and impulse lines. And, rather interestingly, a Husky 61/266 style air filter will go on a Jonny, but a Jonny filter is rounded at the rear and hits a Husky top cover.

I'm gonna now turn my 162SG into a 272. Probably doing some very light work for the ports if they don't look serviceable and removing the base gasket and doing a muffler mod for a knockoff 272 muffler. Also I try drilling and tapping new holes for the taller top cover since my original cover is broken and the tall cover and filter are cheaply available as a knockoff.

Thanks ever so much for this I am a saw nerd and this is such a pile of goodness. Picked up a 266 I was told was a xp but turns out it is a metal tank 266se. Guy kept it as a parts saw and he never got around to parting it out. I had intended to use the parts to Frankenstein up a 268 build but no way I can do that now. Need to dig into it seems like it has no compression but the cylinder and piston is mint and the ring was free. Thank you again

The HS 254B carb which is a late 268, will also work on the early late 266, but you will have to remove the top cover to adjust the idle. They can be had for about half the cost of a 224 OE tillotson….

I am so happy that you brought up the Tillotson 254B! I thought it was odd that he didn't mention it b/c that is the one that everyone cloned and is reselling as aftermarket carbs for all these 61, 266, 268 and 272 saws. I really like the 224 carbs myself, but those are getting hard to find these days.

Great video. Just a little note about cylinder cover clearance on 266 and older white and black top 61s. 268 and 272 cylinders have a more vertical spark plug that won't fit under the older covers and the newer covers including the orange top 61s have different screw placement. I'd love to see a video on flywheels. Thanks. Great channel.

..Those coarse-threaded clutches..they seem to be identical to the L65-L77 series..maybe some of the other early CD series, too, but I am not sure...as you said, they are hard to find..I collect every one I can find, I sell them sometimes on Ebay and my Website, and they bring good money..one thing I have found, is if you can find a good hub(spider) that is not cracked, you can replace the shoes and the springs with the ones for the fine-threaded clutch..they will interchange..thus, the coarse-threaded ones can be semi-rebuilt. As you said, if you have these saws split, the best way is probably to replace the crankshaft with a fine-threaded one..however, I think you are probably stuck with the coarse-threaded clutch if you are building a 65 or 77..maybe you know if there is another crankshaft that will work in them, I do not..BTW, those L77's are really strong running saws! :) ...I have been saving the cracked coarse-threaded clutch spiders, thinking I may find a way of repairing them someday...

..I remember getting new a 61 about 1986 at work..we all thought it was a strong-running saw..until much later, when some of us had the opportunity to run a 266 and then a 272...they sold a TON of 61's around here..but not many 66's, 266's or 268's..I know those saws were more money than the 61's, but I always wondered WHY so many people bought 61's when the 66's,266's, 268's, and later 272's could be had with MUCH more power, with the same size and weight, on the same chassis??..same with the L65's and L77's..they are the same size and weight, same chassis, but there are WAYY more 65's around than 77's, and the 77 has WAYY more power??
