watched the video that ironhorse made about the 394 and 395. In his words the 394 makes about .5hp more then the 395 due to the larger open transfer. The intake block may as well add to it, or it could be the sole reason its more powerful. He said it was due to the changes they made for EPA rules. And as everyone knows, when you restrict something in the name of regulations you are going to lose power.

I would have thought a heavy piston would aide in torque an a lightweight piston would aide in rpm. I've learned something new.

“Look what I can do and I’ll show you how I do it” Awesome. When I’m not messing about with saws I work as an instructor in a very hands on and tactile environment. As I see it my job is not to show people how good I am but how good they can be. You do this and it keeps me coming back. Thanks Tinman 👊🏻

I’m just watching this video again…I’d actually absolutely have to cut down the corners of the 272 piston and run that in the 038m build.,. It’s got several advantages that I couldn’t leave on the table.,, you can always tune the saw to 11,800 and leave a little zip but own the torque on your build… I don’t let them over rev with no load speeds… 12.200 tops… it’s only ever 11k in the cut… ? 272 piston in all my 038m builds from here on out! LMFFAO!!! Love it buddy. Keep on Truckin!

Great video as always! 046, MS460 and MS461 are 52 mm bore as well would like to see all of them side by side with the 038 and 272 pistons. If anybody got them send them to the tinman lol.

Had great success with my Echo cs302 rebuild. Runs great after years of sitting on the shelf. Started new journey with 64 xl12 Homelite. Junkyard find. Tips and info learned on this channel have gotten me to appreciate vintage saws and getting them running again. Awesome video as usual. Keep the great content coming. Great job.

Very interesting with those pistons. Great job. Your a great teacher. Thank you.

In regards to the boot on the newer version compared to the block with the impulse hole, the boot at a angle restricts velocity requiring that much more fuel and air with the rite restrictions to the muffler or compression with let’s say a pop up should make the boot style increase velocity. Also On camera those transfers seem drastically different. Love what your doing. Did I say that. Yea I did. Big hugs from this little swamp called Philadelphia.!!!

Tin man... I just ported my first saw(cs590). It is amazing to me how gratifying It is. I wouldn’t have done it without your inspiration and instruction. Many thanks! You may have created a monster!

Might have to get a small scale to weigh pistons, also would be interested to see a 372 52mm piston in comparison to the 38 mag

Can you even get an aftermarket 394 cylinder/piston? All I see is the conversion kit and if that's the only option then your better off buying a 395..

Good info, as always, thanks for taking the time to review these intricate details. When the time come defenatly upgrading cylinder and to a pop up piston on my 268. Cut a cord and a half of frozen tamarac yesterday. Just awesome being out in the bush. TC Tinman Mahalo 🤙🤙🤙.

Tinman that's a great demo. Sure you know, but some probably don't, "KS" stands for Kolbenschmidt. A German company that been making all kinds of motor parts for over 100 years. For years my monthly decision was do I buy KS, or Mahle piston/cylinder sets for my VW business. Cheers

Great Video Tin man ! I just received an order from wolf creek also today :) one meteor and one hyway tittynickel . Both for 272 / 52 mm conversions . Comparing the cylinders i noticed the meteor had nicer port chamfers that the hyway but the meteor has more flash . The hyway pop up piston absolutely has bigger windows than the flat top meteor slug . Thanks for all the efforts in the videos they help immensely

That’s a really good piston swap! 😉👍. The 372 52mm cylinder like’s a ms650 piston also…😂😂😂. I love to swap around pistons and I’ve spent a good bit of time sitting around and making comparisons… since I’ve gotten access to the Hyway 52mm popup pistons they are my go to… I toss them into the Farmertec 52mm cylinder and they are a perfect combination… they don’t need very much timing numbers correction and they pump out the power… you definitely need an OEM 395 decomp button or you can’t pull them over fast enough to get them started… heavy duty compression right out of the box! They make a smokin bolt on…. 😂👍💡😛🔥🇺🇸💪. I got this homelite 1050! I need to get it measured up so I can figure out what we are going to do… then I’m going to weld it up a little pipe for the muffler mod…. I’d freaking love to have my shop in a good enough setup to be able to make a few expansion pipes for my 372’s and the g660… and I’ve got a couple of old echo 8000’s my old work saw’s… I want to build one of those into a play saw with a real expansion pipe and make it an absolute animal!!! 24” bar and a 10 pin! I need to find a really wide or tall bar so I can play with this 10 pin driver…. I had square ground on a 25” Rollomic on my happy g660… it was freaking just crazy!!! Just grip and rip! I was just twisting it through the wood and my tree buddy Dave was stammering on about holy heck that’s a really fast cutting saw!!! 😂😂😂

I have a question that I hope you can give me some advise on. It is not about porting. My saw, Stihl 031 will not idle properly and when it runs the saw get very very hot. I changed carbs, changed chips that I installed, removed points and condenser, advance the timing and then put it back to the original setting. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Tony

Hey buddy thanks for the info, I love all the videos and how to rethink about power saw. Always brother be safe and stay warm, have funny with the ❄, I wish we got snow like that, to night we got wind and dust off snow, less than 1/4 inch.

I have both a 394 and 395 the 394 in big wood 4ft+ maple seems to have more power the 395 seems to be a higher reveing saw that out cuts the 394 in 30in and smaller wood and like you just said about getting older I'm coming up on 40 let's just say I'm feeling my lifestyle choices from when I was a younger and not as wise as I thought man them 2 saws very rarely get used my 385 gets me by for the most part I'm starting to hesitate to grab that saw somedays

TinBasher!!! You’re funny brother…. “They are like so similar and yet they are totally different too …man !!! LMFFAO! Personally I’d rather have just one big open and flowing transfer… I cut out a lot of that division material on several of my models and I’ll bump my blowdown to add a little hit on my case pressure to compensate for the loss of speed in my transfers… I’m not into speed or high free reving numbers… only care about the torque… I love the torque… 😂👍

So does swapping parts out. Does it matter what brand piston gets used for another brand cylinder?

squish on that tall piston might intrude on the Squish enough to screw performance.

i changed the piston in my g395 clone to reduce the slap. i took out the base gasket as i had room at the top but i cant get it to start now. it could be the carb i guess as im waiting on a new one. im wondering if i messed up the intake timing?

Can’t use 395 piston in 394 cylinder because the ring pins are in the wrong place . That block makes a 394 run stronger than a 395 boot
