Another beautiful axe from Husqvarna! If you work with wood outside/inside, this axe can become very useful. It is a very good tool.

Something to note is that the extra width of the cutting edge makes it more useful for planing surfaces down. The width lets the blade glide over low spots without causing it to dip into them, which is important so that you don't keep digging into those spots and making them worse. If you've ever used a hand plane it is a similar principle, but instead of the length of the plane's shoe keeping you from diving into low spots, the width of the blade, itself, does that job here.

I just bought this axe today and I'm very happy with it. It has the most beautiful handle that I have ever seen. It, too has the best grain alignment out of all the axes I have looked at. It is damn near perfect from top to bottom. In fact, the handle is so nice I just want to keep it as a wall hanger. The edge was a little rough when I got it, but after running a fine file over the edge a few times it was shaving-sharp. The fit is very nice. Just a slight gap on the shoulder, but otherwise perfect.

I've got this ax & I love it. Use it mostly for carving & for kindling. I just wish they made a smaller version of it -- doesn't take long before 3 pounds becomes hard to control when carving & planing.

Nice. I love my gb carpenters axe and I'd love to try this one. It's got that fawns leg handle that a bit longer compared to my straight one. I'd love to try this one. It looks like a great axe. That might be one of the axes being used on this seasons Alone too.

I would like the leather to match in color. Thank you, Margaret

Very good! The rivets that hold the strap on the sheath will wear prematurely if you do carry it around like that on the belt for long. A sheath with a belt loop and a ring would be real nice though, so if you fall while trekking, the axe can move freely away from your innards slightly.

Say Heah Eugene, I defenetly am getting the Husqvarna Carpenters Axe, but last weekend I took my Ka-Bar Zomstro with me. The reason I bought it was to pair it off with my BK-2, anyhow Virtovice did a video on a Japanese Hatchet, and I didn't connect the dots. Also the Carpenter Hatchet has a nice flat straight edge and still I didn't connect the dots. But then it all came together and the bulb went off. I started to use my Zomstro which sort of resembles a Japanese Hatchet the Coping Shape and is similar to the straight flat edge on a Carpenters Axe, and sure enough it worked great when I formed a Pancake Lattle which I'm finishing with my Skookum Bush Tool, I see your ready to form and build wood tool's and bush craft. Your Husqvarna and your Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 seem like two great pieces of bush craft tools.

Eugene have your father make you a leather holster for your hatchet or axe that you want to carry on person. A loop (for the size of the handle on a hatchet) attached to a belt loop simple but safer, I have them for mine. If the handles are similar, than all you need is one.

Great video. I have a question about axe edges. I was always taught growing up that an axe should have a "working" edge meaning not razor sharp but sharp enough to efficiently fell a tree. I found that "razor" sharp left the blade edge too thin and requires a lot more sharpening as it dulls a lot more quickly. The greater number of required sharpenings takes more metal off more quickly. I may be wrong on this, but I was curious what your take was. Thanks for the great video! I have this axe too and use it for timber framing.....its great.
@grayrachelle
@grayrachelle 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I've been using a hatchet for a couple of years for limbing, some chopping, splitting, and as a carpenter's axe/pushknife for soft cured wood. It makes sense what you say about a working edge--I've read that constant razor sharpening is a waste of an axe. My hatchet does a much better job debarking and rough planing when it's sharp (sharper than the factory edge when new) but I don't know that I've gotten it razor sharp.

Say Heah Eugene, I still like one of my Fav's Bushcraft Hatchet my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet that I bought at a closeout. I guess they up-graded the Range. So I got it for a great price. The Hatchet is a European Style. But it's made out of a great steel that holds a great edge retention. O still need a Sheath that you never got back to me, But I got a nice edge protection sheath. Just tge edge. But tge Hatchet came out spot on. It only took me a little to get it as good as my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe. I'm very happy with it.,,. p

this axe reminds me of my own storytime^^ I had a old cheap axe head lying around(I actually did this when i was younger, 16 or so) and decided to experiment a bit with it, I enderd up changing the shape of it entirely and made a straight edge, made it thinner, lighter, just took off a lot of material and all that and made it really sharp, and it is fabolous working with this thing, nothing else I ever had cuts like that thing as a finish I blued the head wich looks really cool, gives it a bit of a vintage look and makes it more resistant to rust long story short if you have the time and skill you can make the perfect axe yourself for like 20 bucks or so Only one great difference: You made it yourself wich makes it a lot more special than just buying an axe, since anyone can do that....

How does this compare to the small forest axe (GB)? I just purchased this axe and like it so far, though my impression is the GB axe is about the same size (19") and will cut as well though with a lighter head, making it more efficient for the weight (2lbs vs 2 3/4lbs). Is that accurate? The grain on this piece is also less than totally perpendicular the handle axis (not sure how much that matters). I was also concerned by the top of the handle, above the axe eye, being split and cracked a bit at the edges - is that a problem? It also appears to be stabilized (resin infused), or just covered in glue. I'm not sure, but I thought an axe was hung properly just by compression, w/ no need for adhesive. I'm still learning about axes and would appreciate it if you could comment on these concerns, one by one. Thanks.
@ReviewOutdoorGear
@ReviewOutdoorGear 7 жыл бұрын
+All the tea in China great questions. The GB is more efficient at chopping, due to its bit geometry. The grain orientation doesn't have to be perfectly inline with the bit. The top of the handle and cracking you are seeing around the eye is not a big deal, some of the Husqvarna's have that.

I personally think this is an easy choice over the much pricier GB Forest axe. While they arenèt the same, it doesnt make the GB better, its better at what its designed to do just as this axe is better at what its designed which appeals to me more as an all around woods tool. Sure the finish of the GB is superior but , for me ,its a tool and as long as its quality materials and fit I can live without a fancy finish in exchange for saving significant amount of money.

The reason that the darker wood isn't as good is because similar to birch wood the outer layers of the tree are "dead". The inner portion of the tree, the heart wood is lighter and a little more greener and denser then the outer portion... In live trees it still does all the same biological stuff as heart wood and its that way to protect from the cold winter months.
