This time quite a long video. So what do I have to say about the Norden 901 after more than 10.000km?

Excellent video! I’m loving my Norden and bought it in February and only put on 3000km and now it’s put away for winter 🥶. I like your chain oiling set up, very clever. I did find a very reasonably priced 4mm aluminum skid plate that’s made in Europe and it’s on sale in the US right now for $169😁.

The problem with waterpump air screw is that the painted surface that the copper washer seals against cracks. I sanded away the paint and used a hydraulic bonded m5 washer seal. Be prepared for leakage from the thermostat housing as well. This and the coolant hoses was my problems with Duke 890r 2020.

Just about to take mine in for the 600mi/1000km service, but i am absolutely loving it so far. It is a 2023 and have had none of the common issues that people report, like the hose clamps or headlight bolts etc, so perhaps they listened. Coming from a 2010 F800gs. Was a solid bike and took me all over the place, but definitely shows its age next to something with the benefit of 13 years of tech advancement. The Norden blows it away in every respect, have not had the opportunity to ride a 2020+ F850GS/A however. Totally agree with you on the noise. I don't want loud, but i do want it to sound good... Really wish this engine sounded as awesome as it performs.

Great review from an experienced rider. Thank you. Just picked mine up today. I typically ride more offroad down here in Australia. I anticipate doing some suspension work but will wait and see how it handles. It looks like you have the double take mirrors. You weren't happy with the original mirrors? Also looking to mount my phone to the gps mount so hopefully it's not to vibey. Think I'll put quadlock's anti vibration thingy on.
@kai-uweoch1159

The orginal mirrors break easily. I had the 790 once blown over by the wind when it was not perfectly parked on the side of the road and there the mirror went. The double takes are basically indestructible because they will move.

For a perfect comparison I would have needed of course to ride one bike after the other. I picked up the Norden in spring, when riding was still not possible due to slippy roads, at that time I had not been on the 790 for like three months. My impression is that the 901 is of course slightly lower (which helps a short legged guy like me, even that I am used to get only one foot down), but also softer. For a TRAVELLER, who is not riding hard in very rough terrain, the 901 feels much more suitable, read more comfortable. You could say: 790/890R Ready to Race, 901 Ready to explore! What I definitely noticed is the smoother engine of the 901. On the 790 I mounted a 16t front sprocket to raise the rpms a little bit (it always felt e g at 50 like 3rd is a bit low, but 4th a bit too high). The 890/901 engine runs much smoother at lower rpms (around 3000).

Please wait for the Expedition. I know this out of experience. Also owned the standard. And now the Expedition. A totally different bike almost. Coming from an 1190R is could not get adjusted to the lowlyness of the bike. And the shock is also a problem. Really a problem if you go away from the tarmac often. It bottoms out very easily. And i could almost not ride it with 40 kg luggage. This was simply not duable. You will also need to buy a few upgrades. An engineguard, a add-on screen , GPS mount , maybe heated grips , in time you want the explorer mode. And i only mention the stuff that the Expedition has per default. And then you still do not have a Norden with the quality of the suspension as the Expedition has. Please do yourself a favor and look into these things. And by that overthink your decision. After owning one then the realisation will start kicking in. This probably will get you a bit frustrated about your decision. And by that taking out a bit of the fun you should be expereincing by owning an almost new bike. And by then the change will cost you a lot of money. Only if you are 100 percent sure that you will leave the bike as it is and if you have very short legs. Otherwise the Expedition is the way better option. The pricedifference is so low compaired to what you get extra. It is your choice but it would do you good if you would reconsider or atleast start overthinking these arguments again. I can tell you my first impression when going from the CRF1000L (first gen of new Africa Twin) to the 790Adv R: the KTM felt much better balanced and easier to handle, thanks to the unique low fuel tank design. Years ago i came back from a long trip through Sweden. Back then owned a XT660Z. And at one evening i was putting some Chinese food in. At a restaurant. And the weird thing that this Chinees restaurant was also a meetingplace for oldies to get some (or a lot) beer. And if that was not enough. Those oldies were not old at all. They all had stopped working at the age of 51 years. Simply because they could. I still remember the feeling it got me. 😪🤤 I am older now and still need to work for more then 16 years. 😪 O, sometimes life is not fair. What shocked me that it all were happy and funny dudes. Totally not worn out by a shitty and hard job. That was what life should be for all of us. I could now be riding around the world. One told me that he also had somekind of shack way up North in Sweden. Planning to go there a few months per year. It was not expensive back then he told me. A few acres of ground. And wood is present. Later i even found myself fantasizing about owning a small wooden house in Sweden. But the distance is making that impossible. Maybe when i am old enough to quit working. 80 m2 is more then enough to live. A decent woodstove or a central boiler so i could heat up water. A few solarpanels and also the back-up of a generator. In my mind i all had worked it out. It would be my dream. In the Netherlands i own a former farm house and almost living ofgrid. So the concept is very duable for me. If my health stays good then this option of living out the rest of my life in that way is very appealing to me. You can always find people but the other way around is way more difficult. So i envy you. Having such a place for your own. Going there when you feel the need to be on yourself. And then also the possibility to start up a light bike and explore your surroundings. I know that you in summer have to do a lot of things so you can stay warm in winter. Probably it takes a lot of wood to do so. But then again. It is just outside the door. Last year i also bought a Norden 901. Coming from a 1190R i could not get used to it. Been riding that 1190R through a lot of countries. Marocco, all of Europe , Tunesia and so on. So i was quit adjusted to that power and that height. It was also perfect for my leg angle. Something i was not aware of until i got the 901. Old as i am my right knee started to hurt after only 20 km'ters. 🤕 And i also was not so happy with the shock. Most other things like the buffeting are problems that you can solve. But overal the 901 gave me the memories back from the CBR600 i once owned. Nothing wrong with that but in my case it was. My bike needed a few upgrades like an engineguard , heated grips and so on. Also did orientate myself about a shock from Hyperpro. Wich would put me back something around 1400.00 Euro's. As soon as i heard that an Expedition would come out i had mixed feelings about that. But asked my dealer for what it would cost me. A lot ofcourse.But i decided to do so. I must say that this was a good decision. And when you take your calculator then it is not so bad. I know the Exped is suiting me much better. Thank you for your detailed experience and adressing that in this video.💪💪 Ride safe Maybe we will meet someday cause Sweden is my land of choice to ride. Everytime i come back to Sweden in summer and do some extensive riding in nature. Greetings from the Netherlands,👍

Why not? Over 100hp should be sufficient to transport 2, but as on any bike you will meed to find a luggage solution. The driver’s seat for me feels very comfortable, guess the passenger seat is, too. Just keep in mind that on all bikes the rear spring rate is for something like a 75…80kg rider, not for a 150kg couple plus luggage. You can increase preload but that will not solve the problem of a too soft spring. If you ride a lot two up, you need to get a stiffer spring. That’s the case for all bikes. Just check out wind protection, some folks don’t like it.

Sorry Paulo if I had been a bit harsh on your ladt video. But to produce good riding videos you need to put some serious effort into it. Look at folks like Norali ”Itchy boots”: she is running at least three cameras simultaniously to get good video footage. That’s why I gave up on it and instead only do ”informative” videos. It needs a lot of effort to make good riding videos. Just a helmet perspective gets boring quickly, no matter how good your riding is.
