Hustle culture is part of our DNA - but it’s making us unhappy. Yale psychologist Laurie Santos explains how to escape your inner drill sergeant and find peace in imperfection.

What if our incessant drive for self-improvement isn't always conducive to happiness? Cognitive scientist Laurie Santos proposes this intriguing question. She notes that while evolution has wired us for relentless self-enhancement, our modern environment, ripe with comparisons and demands for excellence, amplifies this instinct, often to our detriment.
The incessant push for "more" and "better" can lead to societal harm, fostering a competitive, individualistic society rather than one rooted in collective harmony and goodwill. Moreover, it can compromise personal happiness. Genuine well-being, Santos suggests, arises from extending compassion towards others and ourselves.
Self-compassion, defined as mindfulness, recognition of common humanity, and self-kindness, can surprisingly enhance performance and resilience without a drill-sergeant approach. Breaking free from the pervasive "hustle culture" requires acknowledging its illusory nature, prioritizing kindness towards oneself, orienting towards others, and practicing gratitude to appreciate one's journey.

One thing I would like to add that I don’t think was very well articulated in this video: In addition to “hustle culture” being a product of natural selection, it is also a product of our economic system. To create a society that feels more fulfilled and happy on a macro-scale, we must reflect on how we can improve our resource and labor management systems.
@world_musician
@world_musician 11 ай бұрын
True, but our economic system is just a human-scale version of natural selection. People are inescapably part of nature so our society and culture reflects and recreates long-scale environmental processes into a smaller time frame that we can understand within our short lifespan. Being rich is just being the biggest ape in the pack. We kinda know a little bit about Dopamine and Cortisol now but those two chemicals form the basis of our whole money system.

While that is a valid point, I think the message is more for people who aren’t necessarily on the bones of their arse and are just trying to achieve more and more despite there not really being a need for that. In a roundabout way, perhaps if everyone was more content with what they already have, there would be more to go around

Well said. Yet another video that perceives the cause of the problem being the system yet still thinks we can change while within the system. The system is what needs to change but very few of us can see or want to see that such a radical change is the answer. We need to leave behind our modern high technology, money driven materialist capitalist system in order to reconnect with ourselves, each other and nature.

This video started nice but it turned out to be a way to shift the blame out of companies. Essentially it is saying that it’s not that you are asked too much, it’s you that want too much. It denies that good enough is not really enough today, either you make it big or you struggle. That is why millennial and anyone who came after are hustlers, it’s a survival response. There's something unintentionally hilarious - and dark - encoded in Prof. Santos' presentation here. She keeps referring to the negative aspects of performance culture and then noting that one way to take effective countermeasures is to realize that self-kindness actually helps you to "perform better." The answer, in other words, to a system that demands performance above any other value or characteristic is to love yourself and others, so that you perform better. The background premise of hustle culture remains unrebutted, untouched and sovreign. This is an ouroboros, a recursive null, not an answer. Without discussion of the ends and purposes of life it will remain that way.

Yeah, it’s a way to shift blame on the worker like usual. It’s not you are being asked too much, it’s your fault you want more. This idealistic video never touch upon concrete data. What is the desired outcome of this hustle culture? Would people be hustling that much if they were paid fairly and didn’t have economic anxiety? These question are not even pondered, it’s just your fault that you are spoiled and want too much.

I found it helpful. The basis is try to minimize constant comparison, don’t be completely self-centered, give back to others, and be easier on yourself. I believe she is talking about destructive self criticism that leads obsession over what you aren’t doing well, which in turn makes you more exhausted. It is like extra work, you perform the task, then you ruminate over how you could have done it better. But, that is my take.

@@pif5023no they are pondered, you just lack perspective. Cause if thats they case, that would then mean people in 3rd world countries should be working longer hours… they don’t. The fact is people would. Why? Because of keeping up with “the jones”. Americas hustle culture also stem from its consumerist culture and the constant need for more. The largest and worse payers in America are public companies. Who own public companies? Everyday Americans. No large shareholder owns more than 20% of the biggest payers. Everybody is a hustler now. Proud of the fact that they can't live from one job, which was the whole point. What's the point of having a job and caring about it and doing good and being on time and struggling and suffering when you realize you can't even pay your bills and you work full time. People make each other work harder by being competitive and saying things like someone is just lazy or not motivated or get on the ball keep your head in the game hustle hustle. It is true. Work is good Money is nice to have. But it's not worth it to work full time and more and you have to ignorant of truth to do it instead of questioning it. Just remember who hates unions, who hates fair pay for labor, who hates workers rights, who wants people to be on welfare. Who doesn't mind if you're homeless, as long as you show up to work everyday and don't smell bad and aren't drunk. Corporations and their little peon servant middle management spineless pushovers. That's who hates those things. Welfare is a bad thing, unless it's corporate welfare and bailouts. Screw that! Think for yourself. Hustle for nature and the soil.

I’m realizing that more and more now as a college student. I was one of those who were convinced that this degree would be my golden ticket to an incredible life, like so many others. College of course is challenging as it’s supposed to be but I have to remember not to push myself too hard. I believe there’s a difference between striving for something and hustling for something. IMO, hustling drains you but striving is more of an understanding that everything happens in due time. Many of my older relatives have told me to be careful what kind of jobs I take because it can take both a mental and physical toll on you. You can push yourself so much that you push into a breaking point.

I appreciate all the thought you’ve put into this. I’m glad someone at the peak of elitism is being brave by discussing these issues. I do however disagree with point number 2. I found those points to not resonate well, and follow the rhythm of typical advice you hear within these communities of hustle culture, of which Yale is a hub. Yale is but one source of high divergence of such culture but it is now widespread in the US. We know the reason people are feeling bad (here point number 2) is overwhelmingly due to living in an individualistic society. I’m a PhD student in physics in the US. I come from a third world country where people can’t do much to influence their external conditions. An upside of this is that the community grows closer together, and people are loved for who they are. One exception are the elites, but those are shallow collaborators and their criticism is but the same criticism of western elites, save delayed by about 20 years or so. When one reflects, they emit outwards and contemplate what they receive. Look outwards if your goal is to treat a disease.

While the video mentioned these internal changes, we need to also look at these external changes the can address capitalism's role in fostering hustle culture: Internal Changes: 1. Embrace Your Inner Sloth: prioritize downtime, folks. Your Netflix queue misses you... 2. Practice self-compassion: accept that you're a beautiful, hot mess like the rest of us; it's okay. 3. Eat the spice of life: gratitude. Start counting blessings, not calories. 4. Others Before Self(ies): switch your focus from the 'me' to the 'we.' Trust me, the world doesn't revolve around your Instagram feed. External Changes: 1. Unions: The Phoenix Uprising: they're not just a memory from your history textbooks. They're the secret ingredient in our recipe for workplace equality. 2. Workplace Democracy: let's reimagine corporations as co-ops. After all, a little bit of power-sharing never hurt anyone...except maybe the 1%... 3. Rethink Compensation: imagine if the salary of the highest-paid person had a bungee cord attached to the lowest-paid person. Now, that's a financial tether that screams 'we're in this together!' 4. Sustainable Capitalism: because there is no point in climbing the corporate ladder if it's just leaning against a rapidly deteriorating planet

I agree with you. I am from the East as well, from a developing country as well. I immigrated for education, not for better standards of living, which is already a novelty to almost everyone around me. This materialism of the West is infectious, it even affects people who aren’t born here. Success in life here isn’t being able to live under a roof and enjoy the more simple things in life. It’s about being able to get the next big house, or the next big car, or the next big party, or the next big party. I feel so disillusioned and discouraged when I see the conditions in which the working class live here. Looking back, I feel stupid about my teenage naïveté that had me convinced that life here was better than back in my home. It’s like El Dorado: people are tripping over themselves and using all sorts of crooked means to get there, and if by some miracle they don’t die they see the golden prison for what it truly is - a prison. This is just my experience however, and there can be people who enjoy living here. At the end of the day, it depends on the individual what they make of their situation.

Part of this video seems like a very roundabout way to reiterate the age-old saying "work smarter, not harder"... suggesting that you can use less time to deliver sufficient value to your employer to remain employed, and as a result retain healthy amounts of time to devote to your own wellbeing. Seems academically/theoretically a noble sentiment, but in practice not an option for everyone. As for countering or diminishing "hustle culture", like many others here I'm skeptical. If a job is acceptable to more than one person, there exists competition for it and assuming people who would fill the role know about it, then the one who "hustles" will get it. HOW you hustle is more important a discussion than WHETHER to hustle. "Hustle culture is a workplace environment that focuses on productivity, ambition, and success without regard for rest, self-care, or work-life balance." So if we focus on the "without regard for" portion, we can do better... but if we are against the first part of hustle culture, then good luck changing a fundamental component of life.

With the background being white, I could almost see improving lighting reflections be a reason except the room is already incredibly well lit and there's no lighting particularly close anyway juding by the fully zoomed out takes, the shadows under look unnatural to the point I thought the sheet was wrinkled/bundled up and had foot prints on it and even if it was for lighting then I still feel like the frame shouldn't reveal the rest of the scene, it's just distracting, you see the whole frame holding up the sheet and I can't think of any good reason for it and the remotely good reasons I can think of don't improve the scene more than it being a distraction takes away from it. It literally feels like oh hey lets put up this screen because it looks like stuff film people do and that makes us look good

How come psychologists never give advice to ordinary workers? They seem only to think about PMC people.

You're "hustling" to death because of the economic system and the injustice in this world. While all you want to do is afford eating decently, with a roof over your head, and affording things you need without thinking twice. All of which should be possible with a few hours work a day.

Natural selection doesn't WANT anything. I hate that she got the scientific groundwork and narrative wrong completely. To say nature or natural selection WANTS anything is a religious narrativ, that there is an entity with mind and will, that wants anything. Thats religion not science. Natural selection is merely a statistic description of the propability to which a set of genes and its phenotyp will multiply in future generations in an given envioremnent of animate and inanimet factors. Its math and probability, not religion. I hate when people from the scientific comunity (and all to often it's psychologists) don't even get the basics of science (nature science).

lol Life isn't about achieving or doing whatever. Life is what you make of it, so stop subscribing to other peoples definition. Your life is what you make of it and in the end, none of your accolades matter because you will be dead one day, so try to do what makes you feel like you've spent your life well. Do you know who likes hustle culture? The corporation you work for and your boss.

It seems that homeless people who beg on the streets must be extremely happy because of their doing less and showing lots of self-compassion.

The definition of Hustle is not being used correctly here. People who hustle NEED to hustle in most cases. They need to make more money to survive. Maybe this person is watching too many videos about people bragging about their hustle on social media. People who need to hustle don't brag about it. I believe people who are not in a position to hustle don't understand this. Please do more research before putting videos up. Thank you.

Here is your way to true Joy in life. Blessed in this context insert Happy. ““Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭3‬-‭12‬ ‭ESV‬‬
