I install a Jeep CJ/YJ Lower Steering Column Bearing kit to replace the stock rubber bushed unit. Great and easy upgrade to your G-Body!!

Hello Mr. Mich. Just wanted to say thank you for taking time and effort on helping us all on our endeavor of restoring our G Body cars we all love. Your videos are very detailed and informative. Your teaching skills are amazing and your communication skills as well. Again, Thank You!

That helps me a lot. You know I am making lower bearing kit for aftermarket. You video teaches me how to assemble those parts, according to this, I can decide what tolerance can be put to the parts when I do manufacturing. Thank you very much

My shaft looks like the one in your other video. And I have a new bearing that looks like the one in this video that you're using but it seems to be too big. Or maybe I'm just doing something wrong, do you absolutely have to take apart the whole steering column just to install?
@hutchhiperf Жыл бұрын
I thought you said you messed up the bearing under the steering wheel. This video is for the lower bearing upgrade. It's located at the end of the column in the engine bay.
@kanob6440 Жыл бұрын
@@hutchhiperf yes I noticed. I was just watching because the shaft was the same as the one I have in my car. And the other video it's different. I don't know if I can complete this so I think I'm giving up on this one. If the whole column has to come apart then I have to pass

Maybe I missed it, but what is the exact diameter of that input shaft???.... Is it an in or is it 3/4 of an in???

Do you have to remove the steering column to put this thing on or can I do it from the engine bay??
@hutchhiperf2 жыл бұрын
You can do it on the car for sure. Just remove the intermediate shaft (the shaft between the column and the steering box). It will be a little tighter to get to everything, but not too bad.

Hey thanks for all the detailed information in your videos. I had a question and maybe you or someone else can help. I have a 78 El Camino, still considered a G body but my steering column end is splined, not a rectangle shape. Will this bearing still work? I can measure the OD of the shaft where the bearing slides over, what size is yours? Thanks?
@hutchhiperf4 жыл бұрын
At the base of the shaft where the bearing fits I mic it at 1.0050. That is pretty much 1 inch around. If you have that at the point where the bearing sits, it's the same. Do a search for Elco bearing update and see if anything else could rule it out, but I think it should work if the OD size is the same.
@wooddie14344 жыл бұрын
Mine measures about the same, thanks for the help!

I looked this part up and it says F body also wanted to know is this on a tilt steering wheel or non tilt
@hutchhiperf4 жыл бұрын
It’s a tilt column I worked on. The bearing is used on Jeep vehicles, but it may be used on others. For sure it didn’t come on our cars.
@ricardocontreras88613 жыл бұрын
Your bearing looks a little loose inside the white plastic housing, is that normal?
@hutchhiperf3 жыл бұрын
Since it's the first time I've done this, I assume so.
@ricardocontreras88613 жыл бұрын
hutchhiperf I installed a Crown Auto bearing kit and had the same play. I searched on the internet , and I don’t think there’s suppose to be any play. Installed it on an 89 Suburban.
@ricardocontreras88613 жыл бұрын
Suburban Ranch has somewhat of the same installation with a bearing kit from steering column services.com. $40 more than the part I purchased from Summit...

@@ricardocontreras8861 Hmmm. Just don't know. At least it's in a very accessible area if I need to change it.

@@ricardocontreras8861 I buy the same as Suburban Ranch and it was loose so I called SCS,I was told they had problems with the manufacturer of the white coupling and have no solution. He told me he has been taking pinstripe tape and wrapping it around the recess part of the bearing 2or3 times. He claims it made for a tight fit. I have not tried it yet. Very nice guy but I got almost $80 in it to have to rig it is disappointing.

It may. A lot of the columns made were mostly the same. It saved money on tooling by making many parts cross compatible. Try a web forum that includes your truck. I bet someone has done this upgrade there.

@hutchhiperf3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! In fact, most times it's done that way. I only took the column out because of all the firewall work. It also made it better to film. Every other video is in the car, which makes filming a chore. Every other one I've done has been insitue.
