Hey Tunazzi, OL can also mean over the limit of resistance that the meter can test, meaning an extremely high resistance. Open line and over limit are the most frequently used terms. I believe everyone uses the same description for NO and NC, thanks

Great video with usual detailed, non-assuming information offered so all experience level techs can understand. If the two strips heaters are typical 5KW each or pull ~21 amps @ 240 V, please address the size of L1-L2 source wires which appear to be smaller (less ampacity) than the wires from the terminal block to the sequencer and to the strip htrs. Perhaps camera angle/depth causes an illusion. Thanks and Merry Christmas with best wishes for the new year.

Hey Papa Joe, You are very much correct! This was only for quick testing purposes and you are right, I should have put 6 gauge on the top. I will put a note in this video and I will put a fixed note in one more I am editing. During the installation the wire must be rated for the max amps of the fuse or breaker that the unit is calling for. Thanks for pointing that out. I was not sure how much of that was going to be visible and this strip kit is sitting on my workbench. Thanks Papa Joe, always a pleasure!

hi, sorry but i am a little confused. one end of the heat strip is getting 120vac (blk wire), the other end is also getting 120vac (blue wire). so how does voltage path goes from L1 and back to L2 when both ends of heat strip has 120vac? please help as i've trying to figure this out for awhile now. thank you to you and all your awesome videos.
@acservicetechchannel6 жыл бұрын
So the 240v finds its way back through the other hot. 240v doesn't use an additional common. It has to do with the sine wave of the voltage being 180 degrees off from the other one so they don't interfere with each other. This frequency happens 60 times per second, thanks

Hey service tech . Can u explain but a little deeper ? So if if there’s no call for heat , and I put my meter across one side of heat strips and the other end I should be getting 240.v since it’s open . On this application, would you run the white wire to the fan relay? Would the sequence of operations be? 1. White tstat wire calls for heat and closes fan relay. 2. sends 24 volt signal to sequencer. 3. Closes 4-5, then 2-3?

What size of heat strips are correct or recommended for a 2 ton heat pump. Thanks for all the information it is really good.
@acservicetechchannel7 жыл бұрын
Hey Ruben, honestly that will all depend on your heat loss for the house as well as where you are located at in the country due to design temp. What I mean by this is if you are working with a conventional heat pump and it is 10 degrees outside, the heat pump won't be able to provide much in terms of heat and all you are left with is your supplemental heat strips. In this case if you were stuck with heat strips only then you may want to go with the higher kw ones. If this is florida or somewhere where the temp does not go down very low then the heat pump will always provide some heat and your supplemental strips can be less such as maybe 5kw and not the full heat load. We cant go just by the size of the existing heat pump size but you would need to know how much total heat you need (heat loss) and the design temp of that area. I hope that made sense, thanks

Great videos! I am doing an all new install of my Gibson/Nordyne 4 ton split system heat pump/air handler. My 24kw heat strip has three 60 amp breakers and my unit is 30 feet from the breaker box in my house. I have to use the HUGE size wire for those three 60 amp circuits don't I? I had been thinking I was going to use a bunch of 10 gauge wire and have an easy time.....
@acservicetechchannel7 жыл бұрын
You definitely cannot use something as small as 10 gauge. You would have to look at the wire length to determine if 6 gauge or 4 gauge to each breaker would work.

This would have been a great time to cover the "W" circuit that requests Aux heat, and the many things that could cause it to go awry... like on my heat pump. This looks a lot like my mom's electric furnace, but my Trane heat pump has a (failed) large 2-pole contactor and a problem with the 24V control circuit for Aux heat. 2 strikes and it's out.
@acservicetechchannel6 жыл бұрын

good vid. need some help, i'm up north, first freezing cold day today since the winter, -13c. So my heat pump is off, aux heat strips took over in the air handler. It is a Trane 4tee3f37b1000aa, system about 12 years old. Noticed when the aux heat starts, there's a machine gun rapid fire/chatter sound at the air handler, right about where the red 20KW line comes in. i'm not really familiar with relays but could it be relays that turn the strips on and off?? (sounds like a machine gun, fairly loud if i put my ear on the panel). Once the heat gets going and the fan is up to speed, it seems to stop, and then starts again a bit when the heat cycle shuts off. I'm still getting aux heat but not sure if the 4 strips are all working 100%. if i lost a strip or 2 out of 4 would the others continue to work or would they all stop?, Is there a fire hazard if either a strip is burnt or relay coils chattering furiously. Or could this noise be something else like arcing at the strips? If its a relay, how long can it function like this? is failure imminent? i am diy, have diagnosed and fixed blower motor and module before and other basics like outdoor cap.

There is no inrush current for resistance heating. The same amperage is felt in circuit when resistance heat is first turned on as it is a minute later, an hour later, and so on.Inrush current occurs in motors, high amp draw to start, than a lower amp draw after up to speed. If ckt. cant handle both heaters coming on at same time, it still wont handle it if they are staggered.

You are correct. That is a resistive load.
