I'm in the Lafayette area. I agree, heat pumps work great with our mild winters. As far as the air handlers, I don't mind the TAMs. I find the pan in the horizontal position to be a bit of a pain to clean well, especially where the coil meets the pan. I've ran into a handful of problems with the TAM 7 EEVs.

Very cool to see someone in the Lafayette area comment. Hit me up on FaceBook or something man.

Trane dealer here since 1984. The TAM air handlers are ok but I prefer the simple TEM air handlers. I have had two drain pans crack on the TAM's because the pvc piping just sticks out there with no support. The blower is VERY NOISY if you have a closet installation or short return duct as opposed to the TEM air handler where the blower is on top. I don't care for the checkout procedures on the TAM's boards. The engineers think techs have all day to go through all of the steps to find a problem and without the guide, your sunk. I'm sorry but I like simplicity to a greater degree and the TAM goes a bit overboard on being overthought.

That black epoxy 4 terminal device is just a AC rectifier for the unloader solenoid as it requires something like 24 VDC instead of 24 VAC. I think the newer Copeland's have it built into the terminal plug for the unloader solenoid. Good video. Thanks

Yes, not a relay. You are correct----- a rectifier.

Thank you for that info. I appercaite it.

Gary Gin You can actually short two of those terminals out to make it swap from low to high. I’d have to look in the book to remember which two lol but I remember that from the Trane school we went to

I totally agree with you John. I really liked the idea of the TAM.... until I worked on one. I hate it. I wish those engineers had to work on them before putting it into production. I can hardly get my hands inside of the strip heat section. Thanks for the video.

I've changed evaporators and blowers on thoughs air handlers. Not a fan of the TAM7. I believe the relay on the condenser is an AC/DC rectifier.

I have that same v shaped air handler. It leaked after 5 years and 1 month.( 30 days after warrantee ran out) $2800 to fix.

9 days later, its still not fixed! GRRRRRR!!!

John you said it best.. “mixed feelings” about these air handlers.. I also think the idea and concept was great, but honestly I think they were released out into the field prematurely.. they should have kept them in production and testing for at least another year to tweak some things.. cons definitely out weigh the pros for sure. Thanks for this video .. this exactly what I was looking for man.. keep em coming and we still need to meet up for that beer! Lol

I put 2 trane systems in my new house I built. I did 18 seer with TAM 9 air handlers. I LOVE them, I have a 3 ton and a 2 ton and electric bill was $125 month all winter.

That’s a rectifier for 2nd stage. Uses dc volts to pull in an internal solenoid

Do you think it's worth spending the extra money for a TAM4 over the TEM4 handler? After watching the full video I'm guessing your a fan of the TEM4 Thanks.

Hey there great video, would you happen to know what the breaker size is for the Trane TAM9A0B30V31DAA? My dad's newly moved into house has this AHU with an 80 Amp 2-pole breaker for it. Seems like overkill too big of a breaker size for it. Any thoughts / feedback

I do not like the way the door seals, I always get air leaks and hard to install the door while in horizontal position. Enjoy your videos John.

Looking for a 3ton heat pump/ air handler for Chicago. Trane the way to go? Communicating or stay away from that? Looking for efficiency but also has to be reliable.
