I've given 2 week notice, and I haven't given 2 week notice. At the end of the day, we were all looking for a job when we landed where we are now. They should have noticed 2 weeks ago I was not happy. Remember fellas in our trade, the company is not our career, it's only a job. Your knowledge is your career, and you can take your knowledge anywhere and have a job. Stay safe out there.

Oh yeah. I have to follow on jobs from techs that were fired, company knew in advance and still let them start the jobs.

I remember when my father worked for a descent size HVAC company, the company changed and the new management were complete assholes to their employees, completely began treating them like shit. This was a company of maybe 25-30 trucks on the road, him and his friends/coworkers planned to all quit at the same time, about 10 guys lol. Once they all had jobs lined up they cleaned their trucks out, drove to the shop on friday evening and dropped off all their vans and placed the keys in the mailbox. All of them called in on Monday saying they are no longer with the company "effective immediately" . The company almost went under lol.

Real talk: No one wants you there once you give notice. You don't want to be there, and they don't want you to be there. I have given 2 weeks each time I left somewhere. I've also received many 2-weeks notice from employees. You need to be there / need them to be there to tie up loose ends, a lot of the time, but no one wants that.. it just becomes a bad environment for everyone, you resent them wasting your time now that your new opportunity is ready, and they resent you leaving them. Personally, at this point in life... I wouldn't give 2 weeks, I'd give a few days. As to loyalty... You're 100% correct, and anyone that says otherwise needs a self-esteem check. If you don't get a raise every year, if you aren't living comfortably, if you don't have benefits, and you aren't respected... IF YOU ARE ACTUALLY GOOD... Next. You don't owe anyone anything. If you're coasting along and not good, well, just shut up and thank god no one has noticed.

When I was younger and more idealistic I believed in a 2 weeks notice for employers. I am now middle-aged and believe at pay day the employer and I are square; I fulfilled my obligation to work and they fulfilled their obligation by paying me. My employer can fire me at any time without notice and I can quit at any time without notice.
@joelmorgan1871 Жыл бұрын
If my employer is respectful and good I will always give notice. If not, I quit on pay day. I've also had several employers refuse to give me my final check for quitting without notice. Once I was able to talk him into giving me my last check, once I had to take him to court, got my check plus compensation for the cost of going to court, once I took the loss of my last check because the owners brother was the local judge and several former employees lost their last check and took the loss on court costs because the judge ruled in his brother's favor so I knew what would happen and chalked it up as a loss.

I've been with my company for 6 years and am really happy. I have seen many techs leave during my time and have noticed that even when you give two weeks notice, they immediately have you empty the van and leave. You are worth what someone else is willing to pay based on what you can do. Up here in the north East there is techs making close and above $45 it all depends on how much you know and what work you can do in the day( knowledge and experience matter). And not be sleeping around. I say you have to do what you think is the best option for all parties based on circumstances. 2 weeks no 2 weeks does not matter. It matters what kind of person you are at the end of the day. Respect to be respected no matter who or what you are. Keep up the good work ...

It depends on the company and the situation. When I was younger, I always gave two weeks notice, but then started seeing i wasn't getting 2 weeks notice before lay offs (never been fired either). I eventually made up my mind, just like you did it seems, to make sure my family came first (they're the ones that are always there for me). If the company has bent over backwards for me, like I do for them most times, then I will definitely give them a notice, but if I'm just another number to them, then I treat them accordingly.

At another employer my supervisor wasn't too happy about me leaving and was actually upset but human resources understood. During my move out of country, I left the van at my last employer on a Friday night for personal reasons. Too many reasons for me leaving the country that they wouldn't understand so I just left a note in my van with a possible apprentice opportunity to hire for my replacement. Nothing against my employer or my team since I did admire my job and was proud to be union without any inside help. Things happen, things change.. you never know where you'll be in 5 years. Just 3 years ago I was in Jersey lol I'm calling the shots now.

I’m to damn loyal to the wrong people. It’s always at the end they offer you a raise too. It’s funny how that works. I know I’m not the only one. Anyone that quits on the spot that’s just bad karma but at the end of the day if you get more money elsewhere then you have to do what’s right for your family so I get it.

It's always good to give notice. You never know if the new place manager/owner knows your current place manager/owner. It shows you have good character and are the responsible type. It also keeps doors open for you. You might need them someday or vice versa. Sometimes it's a small world. In our country, we have to give 1-2 MONTHS notice, depending on how long you have been employed there.

I always try to put the 2 weeks notice. What I don’t do it’s to stay too long if they don’t want to pay me what I think I deserve, If I like the company and it’s working out good I’ll try to get a raise, but most of the time you have to make a move to get more money. It is sad but it is the reality on these times. I went to one boss after I have another offer making 7 more dollars per hour, ask for a raise and he came back offering me only 1 dollar more, I just said “Here it is my two weeks notice”. He was trying to convince me to stay.

Another time I was working at post office and I gave my letter of resignation and 2 week notice and manager told me don't bother showing up the next day. I have always given notice and sometimes they are decent and sometimes they get angry and tell you get out. I have only been fired from RGIS since I had 3 jobs at that time and couldn't stay up for two days straight and called out and dude said if I can't come in I was fired....I said it was only 9 bucks an hour and my lowest paying job so I would be ok. That's because most employers fire on the spot when you quit. I've always emptied my van except for my tool bag when I give notice. If I have to uber home I can toss the bag in the trunk, nbd. There are too many shitball companies out there. I still have always given two weeks notice to every job I have ever quit, even the crappy retail jobs I had while I was in trade school.
@refrigerationconfidential43763 жыл бұрын
Technically you are not required to give two weeks notice. This is a small trade so our name is everything. Giving two weeks is just us leaving in good terms and not burning bridges. Techs don’t leave because of money they are generally not happy and if the leaders can’t see that then they were not doing their job correctly. The getting fired part and not getting two notice is also tricky yes you didn’t get two weeks heads up that you were gonna get fired but did you get a verbal? A write up? It doesn’t just come out of nowhere there are usually some kind of sign. If there was not then once again leadership was not on top of it.

I usually give a 2 week notice just for my own sake of having integrity, however I have walked off of 2 jobs before. It depends on the situation now the 2 jobs I walked off on Both of which Was either, walk out and not have a job or knock him out and go to go to jail. In this industry, like you said, "they need us more than we need them" So I have noticed that is not uncommon not to give a 2 week notice. my last employer I gave a 2 week notice They didn't know what to do with a 2 week notice because no one's ever given them one. Sense it was already slow they let me go anyways that day which I was actually hoping they would have done. Now I work for QT and couldn't be happier because I choose dignity over loyalty because the owner will drop you the moment they hire a replacement.

Only one time have I not put in a two weeks notice and it was because I felt totally unappreciated and disrespected by my employer. I try to leave on a good note. I cannot believe the hours some of the heavy refrigeration guys put in. I would never work like that.

Loyalty start with the Company. if they make you feel appreciated and they show it then we are. when I start a new job I'm loyal to my new company at the beginning until they make me feel that my progress is stale. then I jump ship but I always give the 2 weeks notice because you never know if you have to come back unless I don't care for the place anymore but remember they can give reference about you too to other owners.

I was told a phrase I never forgot a long time ago, “at will employment” I give two weeks notice if I’m respected. I also realize some bottom of the barrel companies can only afford so much for pay because they have bottom of the barrel refrigeration work, it’s cool though, if they can only afford so much, I’ll still show respect because I had a job, I’ll wash their van and uniforms, like you I’ll complete my on call because in this field we’re brothers and can’t just walk out on our on call team, and give a two weeks notice only if the respect is equal. Also if it’s not equally beneficial for the technician as it’s for the employer then it’s time to go!

It's all situational, I've given 2 weeks notice and I've also given 2 minutes notice. If a company treats me with respect they deserve the same. If I am being treated poorly for whatever reason I'll leave when I feel like it and not a minute later.

My last company I was with for almost three years. I put in a one month notice,I also volunteered to be on call until my last day. I agree with a lot of what you said,When I work somewhere ,that company has my 100%,100% of the time. Always give a two weeks or more,People talk..Period. Unless you absolutely hate the place and are Under appreciated. Then fuck that place 🤗

I only didn't give a 2 weeks noticed once, if the company treats you like a dog leave at once like I did but if they have been good to you and you are leaving for more money then give 2 weeks notice

Aren’t you going to miss working in supermarkets? Seems like TDI does more chillers and commercial warehouse refrigeration.

I'm not gonna miss the supermarket oncall.

I generally let people go after a week even if they give 2 weeks notice, just because its been my experience that the employees dont give much care or quality on the last week of work. also, I like to catch them off guard just to help clean out the van and make sure they only take their tools and not my parts or tools

I had a first sergeant tell me when I was getting out that there’s no loyalty in the real world and to do whatever I had to do to get ahead. Once your notice is in you no longer care about the work your doing anymore your brains already onto the next job, in my eyes what’s the point of doing that anymore. And a lot of times I’ve given a notice the company purposefully gives you the shitty jobs, no thanks. I’ll tell my next employer I can start in two weeks work one more week where I’m at quit on a Friday and enjoy a week off before the next one.

I have been an employee and an employer. Employees hate getting fired in general. Employers love getting fired from jobs in general. Employees love stealing the clock from their employer

Personally, I would always give 2 weeks, regardless of the situation. Worst case scenario, tney let you go same day; and you probably already have something lined up anyway. 2 weeks, to me, is just an assurance of not burning bridges and shows good character. This industry is too small, and who knows who might be your boss next.
