One thing to consider is that a important part of your relationship with a customer is your role as educator. I assume that you researched systems before you chose the one you stand behind. I believe your customer's objection is an opportunity to educate him on the reasons to chose your system (reliability, quality of components, etc.), while treating him as a professional. I would ask him what he would answer if a customer would want to purchase a random scuba diving equipment.

WOW Curtis. hard for the installers to install these for access. Because they go in long before the Ceiling grid goes up. The Line set could have been installed better.. I had a shorted Speaker line in a Super Market that took several changes in the seasons to find, Intermittent in the Winter, Fine any other time. Found the Speaker wire shorting where it passed over a steel Stud top Plate under the Roof decking where the Top plate was screwed to the underside of the Deck. there was just enough space for the Wire to get in that space and got wedged in. the Snow/Ice load on the Roof Deck pinched the Wire. Once found it was an easy fix. Thanks. Mike M.

Lesson learned be careful in zips and wiring next to copper pipes with heating and cooling - insulation will come off or run against it as the fan operates. I do wish HVAC designers created neater wiring housings in HVAC equipment to better protect it from mechanical and thermal damage while still maintaining ease of servicing.

The ladder hanging off the back of your truck is scary looking. You should get a "BackRack" and then you can put the ladder over the cab of your truck instead of hanging way off the back like that. I had one for my pick up and it worked great for long ladders and its safer.

It is a good feeling when you find a definite solution to a problem like that. Nice job. And you are right about the pricing of a new unit. He asked for a quote and you gave him one. When you supply the equipment you take on a responsibility for it, that has value. Next time when they tell you they can buy one cheaper, offer them 3 years free labor on covered parts install or some low risk to you offer just to make the sale and keep good feelings between you and a repeat customer. Good word of mouth advertising has value.

@orionwarren42442 жыл бұрын
Most people don't know that most independent trade contractors charge a 'mark-up' for the parts/equipment they install. Why? Because if those parts fail, the parts supplier will replace them for free but won't cover labor, which the contractor has to absorb under the warranty they offer. The mark-up 'somewhat' covers the warranty labor. A lot of guys will install customer supplied parts but won't offer any warranty on labor should the parts fail. Being mostly made in China, it's a safe bet they probably will!!

My least favorite job is working on anything above a tile grid, even worse with insulation on the lay in tiles. Good diagnosis in the condenser. Side point, I have little patience for a client that moans about costs when they ask for a bid, and thinks they know better. Ok then go do it but don’t holler when I won’t rush over to fix the mistakes you will make.

When customers say they can buy their own equipment I tell them go ahead but add $3500 to the cost you pay for the equipment because that’s what I will be charging you to put it in. I can get the equipment cheaper than they can and I am going to make $3000 minimum after my cost no matter what. Take it or leave it. He owns a business. He knows.
@stevetanner5252 жыл бұрын
So, hypothetically (because this happened here recently), say an R22 system got stolen by metal thieves from a vacant house during renovation. The owner happens to know a someone at the supply house (because he, uh, does renovations) and gets a complete new system (since the AH was also R22). He has the new condensing unit set on the pad, air handler put in the closet, and the line set capped/protected. You want $3500 to finish wiring, connect the ducts, braze it in, vacuum, and charge? Even if you flushed the line set to be sure it's clean that's a hell of a margin. 🤑

I will not install or service diy or customer bought equipment. My reputation is so good I get paid in full in advance. Why would I take a chance damaging my reputation cause someone cares more about their money than my family. My 43 years of experience is exactly why good customers hire me.
@MrKen592 жыл бұрын
I do a lot of my own work because I’ve had enough “professional experts” do questionable work that had to deal with and creates more headache for me. I have no problem paying for the work, and I expect to pay a fair price as i expect to be paid for my work. - I just want it done right, and not every expert is reliable. Put yourself in the customer shoes - it’s hard to determine who to trust. In regards to the Home Depot thing, they have lower cost because it lacks the support, but all things considered, the cost comes from somewhere - you just add the buffer to the equipment cost. BTW, putting equipment in a place like this is a risk to those who support it. I’ve also seen professionals install equipment that makes it impossible to get around it. I don’t know the answer, but this stuff needs to be accessible.
@stevetanner5252 жыл бұрын
The problem is that I care about my family more than yours, and my money goes to support/feed my family too. I've always followed the "if you don't know how to do something right, pay someone who does" principle, and I'm happy to pay you for your skills. However, I'm not an idiot and the internet is a thing. Several "great" techs have lost their reputations (and future work) with me by severely overcharging for parts; like 10x Grainger's price (which is high to begin with). I get having some markup, particularly stuff you keep in-stock on your truck. You float that cost, and knowledge of what to stock has value. But when you're in my house taking money that would go to groceries, tuition, and bills, don't tell me a $15 capacitor is $150 when you're charging me full labor rate, diagnostic, and trip fees. It drives DIY and reduces everyone's safety.

@russellhltn13962 жыл бұрын
What if it's junk brand? He is probably is selective as to what brands he works with.
@Balticblue932 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say greedy, but any time a customer of mine plays that game, I put a really big labor charge on it and in large lettering,; "No PARTS OR LABOR WARRANTY." And I have verbally told a couple that my labor rate doubles when it is someone else's equipment. Surprisingly enough, I have had customers agree to the high labor charge, after they called around and none of my competitors would install the equipment they bought, period. One fella thought he could do it himself and called around and everyone refused to work on it. So, he called and apologized and asked if I would come fix it and set it up properly. I charged double, plus he lost all his 410a refrigerant. So had to re-charge the entire unit once I fixed everything. So, I won many times because of that or someone going with a competitor and then the competitor is a ghost when called back. So, I get to charge for that too. But many guys won't work on other equipment when I will, but the labor rate goes up by double or more and I still don't have to warranty any of it. So, if it lasts a week, that is how it goes.
@549BR2 жыл бұрын
That's some real gall, buying it cheaply elsewhere, then calling you to install it. The Ford garage allows me to do it with my Crown Vic, as most OEM parts are no longer available from Ford. Whole different situation.😎
