@harryschrysan31836 ай бұрын
You have those mixed The start has more turns and thinner wire and the run less turns and thicker wire. Run had less resistance to Start!

Does the start and run has to be exact when adding com to run and start to com? I have a compressor that has S - C : 4, R - C: 4.3 and S - R : 8.0 instead of 8.3. Does that make the compressor bad?

Great video. But the only thing this and other videos leave out is what happens if the sum of resistance readings DON'T add up. Meaning, what does that look like? I'm in that situation now, as a DIY trying to diagnose my compressor after replacing a bad 2-pole circuit breaker (one pole was bad) and finding the one of the terminal wires blown off which shorted to the casing and tripped the whole house power (ac cb's are on same outside meter panel as main shut off). Anyway, I get readings across all 3 pins, all under 10 ohms, but the C-S winding is reading high, thus the S-R sum doesn't match up with C-S+C-R. Frustrated. Waiting on new connector wire kit to arrive before I can hook it up and retry, but worried it might blow out again with this odd readings. I just don't know what typically happens in the field in this situation. No one seems to cover that part.

@softwarephil17093 ай бұрын
A high voltage “megger” insulation tester like a Fluke 1507 would be the best way to test resistance to ground.
@HVACR5592 ай бұрын
Most shorts to ground are low resistance, so a megger isn't always necessary. The 902 FC only goes into kΩ, he needs something that can at least get into MΩ. FLUKE doesn't really consider the 902FC to be a true DMM for this reason. The biggern problem is that he is doing comercial work on 480v 3∅ systems. The 902FC is only rated to CAT III 600 v it does not provide enough protection from transient voltages that can be present on a 480v 3∅ line. In this environment it is important to have a DMM that's properly rated and fused to CAT III 1000V. Don't mistake CAT II 1000 v to be the same as CAT III 1000 v because it's not. Only use the OEM fuses that are designed not to explode with an arc-flash like a standard glass fuse will do if something unfortunate happens. If you only do residential 1∅ work a CAT III 600 v should be fine but I would still opt for a DMM with the higher rating.

Relay checked good. I replaced the overtemp switch & relay; still won't work. Could the compressor be stuck? If so, how can I prove that? Thank you.

Hi. I checked my compressor using your instructions. I couldn't access the compressor directly because I can't reach it (5 ton system). I disconnected the wires from the contactor and the capacitor. I first checked for ground shorts. No shorts. I then checked resistance. My readings are a bit off. I'm reading 1.4, 1.0, 2.0. So it's not adding up correctly. Does this mean my compressor is going bad? I checked the amperage draw while running. I get different reading before and after the contactor. I get 16A (terminal side) and 21A (load side). Is it normal to get different Amp readings before and after the contactor? The RLA is 26A on a 5 ton heat pump. Thanks.

in other videos it is said the Ohm's between the 3 should be more or less the same, instead of the top 2 = the bottom 2, why is that?
@harryschrysan31836 ай бұрын
What does top 2 does even mean? 😅 There is no such thing, you have to determine which is start and ran. Some times you can't read which one is which and have to find it yourself doing this test. Now for a single phase compressor the start winding has higher resistance between S and C, always! R to C has lower and the combination should equal to the two other findings. Small discrepancies like 0.5Ω to no more than 1Ω should be fine. Now, 3 phase motors should have ALL of their windings at the same resistance value. It's as simple as that. 🥂 Cheers

So for a Samsung Compressor with the S-C-R scheme, I get readings of S-C 7.2 ohms, C-R 7.5 ohms, R-S 7.2 ohms but none went ground to copper. Is my compressor good or bad? One more note, the compressor- MKV190CL2B is label rated as 240VAC 3 P- Huh? I'm only providing residential from-the-wall 120VAC. How can it work?
@PuddinJr199310 ай бұрын
It is 3 phase, the 3 phase is created by a pulse width module signal from the inverter control board that converts single phase to 3 phase. In the Appliance tech world we see more dead inverters dead then compressors on Samsung units.

I can't find any videos on MECHANICAL FAILURES of a compressor. I have a compressor that the windings are fine but makes a ugly loud noise at start up and then trips the breaker. Anyone know of a good video to check for mechanical failures?
@JumpermanTech2 жыл бұрын
I have many troubleshooting videos on my channel so subscribe for new videos every week! Sounds like locked rotor on the compressor. Check the compressor specs for LRA. Locked rotor amps. Upon startup, check amps on the compressor and if it's really high and matches the LRA versus the RLA (Running load amps) then you have locked rotor and the compressor needs to be replaced. Before determining that, make sure your start/run capacitors are good. If the caps are good, your compressor is bad and needs to be replaced. If the capacitors are bad, replace them and see what happens. Most likely will solve your issue. Thank me later 😅

Two types of shorts can occur in a compressor motor, a turn-to-turn short within a winding or a winding-to-frame short. The reading obtained between the Run and Common, and the Start and Common pins should be within .5 ohm of each other. If these readings are significantly different, the winding with the significantly lower reading has a turn-to-turn short and the compressor needs to be replaced. Check for a winding-to-the-motor- frame short by taking a reading between each of the pins and the compressor housing. If the meter's LCD displays anything other than an "O.L." during these tests, the compressor is bad and needs to be replaced.
