Carrier infinity used to be a nice system like yours but lately I have had so many problems out of the box with these systems. Not sure what’s going on with carrier but the quality control must have taken a hit.
@isaacwall95149 ай бұрын
Have you considered an ERV for fresh air? Carrier makes one that connects to the infinity system. I have that in my house and it works great. Getting the exhaust air from the bathrooms, eliminated the need for noisy exhaust fans.

Yeah I am probably gonna install an erv but I haven’t decided which one yet

You nailed the balancing method perfectly! Amazing! For a fixed duct design (as in no VAV's changing the restriction of different paths), I prefer calling the method "proportioning" rather than "balancing". Getting the right proportion of air in each room percentage-wise like you did while keeping the most restricted path fully open to reduce static is the way to do it. BTW, in commercial balancing, the job is considered balanced when within +/-10% of design. Also, VAV controllers usually control airflow with a deadband of +/- 5% of maximum design airflow to prevent hunting. As such, your percentage discrepancy numbers are terrific! I agree with you on communicating systems not being nearly as configurable as what the hardware has the potential to do. Been doing commercial HVAC controls for almost 10 years including balancing, programming, installing, etc. Your channel is the most on-depth on YT when it comes to practical application of buolding science. Thank you so much for your high quality work and entertainment!
@julesc.944910 ай бұрын
Oh, and as for bringing in fresh air into the house, are you considering an HRV/ERV? I could see you needing an ERV to conserve humidity inside the house in your dry climate but if exhausting bathroom air, you might over humidify with a tight house. An HRV might be a better fit then. You could have it ducted such that the exhaust is being pulled from the bathrooms and the fresh air gets pulled into the return of the air handler. On the control side, HRV/ERV can usually come with a timer switch for bathrooms to force maximum ventilation. As for air quality control, you'd have to check what your future IAQ sensor has in terms of auxiliary contacts and programming, what the Infinity air handler board can do and what types of main HRV/ERV controller are available for IAQ control. You'll have to do some reading to determine your preferred sequence of operation available from those different options. Of course, you'd have to call for the air handler fan to run when the HRV runs unless you duct the supply of the HRV directly to dedicated diffusers. Building pressure could be maintain that way when running the bathroom exhaust. And while less of an issue in your climate, make sure you can configure the HRV with exhaust only defrost and not recirculation. You wouldn't want bad smells throughout the house!

Yes I am looking into the erv/hrv route trying to decide how to configure it. I will likely use Haven air quality monitor to trigger some sort of action based on building conditions….. funny thing is all this work and my wife and I are already talking about moving in 4 years when my youngest finishes High School but if anything all this work just keeps me busy in the mean time

Its more efficient but its not ideal because of sound. doing an acoustically lined and exterior insulated transfer duct through the ceiling is better to dampen sound transfer from one area to another

The thermostat at 12:16, I have the same one (Carrier Infinity Series B), it doesn't like powering back on after a short power outage. I have to shut power off to the furnace for 5+ minutes to power it back on. Anything shorter and it won't power on. It was always like that. I've tried updating the firmware via SD card (WiFi says something like firmware update not available), but it's stuck on 3.40. Maybe the latest release will unstick it.

In some of videos you’ve talked about being bored at times and looking for new ideas of your KZbin channel could turn into. You ever think about turning your website into a forum where people can ask questions and get advice from others. Then you catagorize all of videos by mod and serial number. Kind of like hvac talk but mainly focused on the videos you’ve uploaded on KZbin. I like hvac talk but I find difficult to navigate through because it covers so much. I’d be a way to basically organize all of the work you’ve done helping people learn the trade ranging from troubleshooting equipment to even where you can find manuals and info on the stuff you work on.

Awesome job Chris! How many pascals were your rooms testing at? I checked a house I did & had 10 1/2 pascals in all the rooms. They all had almost no undercut. Even with undercuts, I think I’m going to end up needing jumper ducts to get below 3 pascals. Got me thinking about how much money is wasted in the industry with contractors chasing their tails with comfort complaints when the whole time they were pretty much oblivious to over pressurization problems. It’s not like guys installing doors have any training about the door allowing a proper return air path. Although seems like rooms just need return air grilles as well. Can’t ever get away from the fact that ducted systems are only as good as the ducts! As always you give fantastic, thorough content & anyone with a functional brain can learn tons from you! Whoever buys your house in four years gets a hell of a deal, as you solved all the invisible problems for them!! If anything they just need to change the lipstick & mascara!

I would just cut the flange on back of return grill. Looks like you just need to cut the top flange off, i may be wrong but from the video it looks like both sides left and right will clear the framing. Then just cut a little notch out on bottom for that stud coming down the middle,or better yet cut that middle stud out, honestly if theres no reason for that stud horizontally across the top get rid of that too and then youre good. I spoke kinda soon before watching what you did but i dont see the need for all that framing in that wall. Multi tool would zip that all out flush and your grill would pop rite in flush. Oh well looks fine in the end tho😊

Hey Chris I just bought my first house and I can already tell there is airflow issues. The supply in our bedroom seems to be way too much we have to turn the set point down to 66 for it to not be brutally hot. Do you think I should add a return or maybe a supply in the hallway to help with that?
@flyinghigh553110 ай бұрын
For maybe an easy fix, you can try to shut the grill down to 50% or less in that room. See if it changes? More return always helps too!
