Good to watch, especially the troubleshooting steps and trying to work around everything. Electricity isn't something to take lightly. I may do some line voltage service casually, but I don't take it lightly. Just because it _looks_ like 120 doesn't mean it's not a nice 240 hookup. I found that out the hard way, being knocked off of a ladder. I wasn't even looking at the closing words section, but I could hear some change in your voice (stifling a yawn, I believe) and it immediately made me yawn. Have a good day/night (whenever you read this)

Totally agree...exact same argument with crimpers in electrical...the argument that people won't learn soldering skills...especially with powerwerx power poles snap on...🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️ you still have to know how to solder...there are many connections that can't be made via a crimper and cap...or with powerpoles or any other adapter...there will probably come a time when all wires and pipes are engineered for crimping...but we're not there yet...

Years ago, I had training from ProPress on the use of their system. They made us mark the pipe with a marker like you're doing, mainly because they had a warranty on the fittings. If they failed, you could claim, but they wanted to inspect the work and if there was no depth mark on the pipe, well you were out of luck. I am not sure if that's the same with the brand you're using or not. I would also be curious to cut the fitting off and see how much that pipe gets crushed, with the ProPress I seem to remember it puts some serious bending on the pipe reducing the internal diameter... Can you do that for us? just carefully cut the fitting??

I had a maintenance guy tell me that the Zoomlock cut his leaks in half on equipment replacement etc. My response was, "In Half?" I can see it being a great tool for the situations like you have pointed out, but I cant see it being a replacement for soldering, and if your are already having a lot of leaks with soldering, then it is poor refrigeration practices to start with and there is no replacement to fix that. I may buy the tool in the future, but currently, it is high priced, but with this economy, it will only get more expensive. Thanks for the video!

I see that power setup frequently. It's caused by the compressor needing 3 phase (3 hots) and the condenser needing single phase (2 hots). There are a lot of installers who don't want to use 5 circuit breaker positions and cheat by using 3 (and having 2 of the hots do double duty). Always check your tester, turn off the power, check that the voltage is zero, then recheck your tester to make sure that it's not lying to you.

As an IT guy, I appreciate your scene about that crimping tool. The analogy in my field is "writing a script to do the job for you." It's about efficiency, proper preparation, and knowing when to use the tool vs when to do it by hand. It certainly doesn't take anything away from the field, it adds another skillset imo.

Exactly! If you're a scientist, you get paid to do important sciency-type things, not because you can add numbers with pencil on paper; that part anyone can do. You use a calculator to unburden yourself of the drudgery to get back to the stuff that only you can do - in this case, designing refrigeration units. Brazing? Anyone with can be taught to do that part in an hour.

Whatever we come across inaccessible bolts like that, we just remove the old coils and put pieces of unit strut across the old bolt holes, that way you don't have to mess with the roof at all, Yeah the coil hangs a little bit lower, but it beats having to call a roofer and risk creating a leak. Excellent zoom lock tutorial, I've never used it before and it looks pretty sweet

Your complaint about the resistance of having new tools in your profession is mainly an "Old Guard" mentality. I had the same in my electronics repair career. I was trained in the Navy for this and the US military usually has the latest technology and safety requirements to do the job properly. When I got out and worked as a civilian in 1975, I was met with the "Old Guard" mentality concerning using the proper new tools and safety issues. If I would do the methods of the civilian sector that was still stuck in the 1950's in the Navy in 1975, I would be written up and I would be before a Captain's mast! I retired in 2001 due to layoffs and medical and I looked unto the electronics repair 10 years later and found a lot of changes in the tools and terminology. This is true in most service industry jobs. Thumbs up!

You bring up a great point in regards to the press tool. Here on the east coast there are channels on KZbin that say the same about press fittings and that they fail all the time and that we don’t know how to soldier. I’ve only had one joint out of thousands that failed and that was because of a defect in the fitting itself and I thought that the pressure from the jaw would even out the defect but it didn’t. As you said I think it’s fear and lack of acceptance with newer technologies in the trades.

My problem with press fittings in some situations like pressing a coupling on to a coil, if that fitting leaks your screwed. Not enough tubing lef tto cut it out and do it over. I suppose you could braze over the zoom lock but wouldn't like doing that with an o ring inside. I think zoom lock for long runs of pipe......not for final connections. Feels illegal to be here this early. But great job with the install. Zoomlock can be a very handy tool if used correctly. Every single evap replacement I’ve done in the last year come with two of the same nozzle. I understand if they send them as an extra, but don’t understand why they have two different lines with different refrigerants, but the same nozzle size. It’s interesting. Also, I use a scrap piece of 3/8 soft copper and it fits almost perfectly in the stem of the distribution tubes. Easiest way I’ve found to do it. Most of the time, we will just order evaps with TXV and solenoids in them when we replace the condenser as well so everything is sized per the manufacturer. Great job.

I can see the advantage of using the Zoomlock Max Tool in places where a Hot Work Permit needs to be pulled and a Certified Fire Watch must be present and have the correct equipment on site while all hot work is being preformed. I have worked where I was that person who stood that Fire Watch and I had to make sure that the Hot Work Permit was filled correctly and have the necessary equipment on site. The time it takes to get the Hot Work Permit can take hours each day. The Zoomlock Max Tool is not classified as Hot Work and only a regular work permit is needed.

I think you'll be using that crimp down method a lot. Its like using shark bite for water lines. its expensive and thats the only negative. So if you balance cost of parts vs time saved, which is better? Not having to haul the torch around and all the stuff that goes with it vs just grab the tool with the fittings and you're done.

for someone to complain that a new technology is "dumbing down the industry" would be just about the equivalent of a turn of the century Ice Man complaining that an electric refrigerator was going to ruin the Ice delivery business. Duh! New, improved technology allows professionals to do their job better, faster, and more reliably. How many times does a guy need to burn himself or set something on fire trying to braise a hard to reach line before he says "maybe there's something to this crimping deal". I've never done HVAC (don't want to), but decades ago, owning my own remodeling and construction company, I learned a lot (more than I wanted to) about electrical and plumbing. Recently, I was forced to "accept" that a sharkbite connection was the only way I was going to get a shower fixture replaced without tearing out a brick wall. Change comes hard to some of us. But, hey, it worked! And, it was a lot simpler than trying to sweat a connection a foot deep in the wall. Love your passion, your consistency of explanations, and ownership!!

BTW, is there a press solution to connecting to the copper-clad compressor tubes? You were hesitant to desolder/resolder in last video, because the copper cladding can not take unlimited soldering. In my industry, the derogatory term is "codesmith", meaning someone who uses available data to produce first car keys, rather then using the most efficient method. Time has value. The only concern is the life span and potential failure of the plastic seal inside those fittings. Will this be the next pvc issue ( or aluminum wiring, if we jump to electrical ) ?

Don’t understand why techs get annoyed by using a pro press or a zoom . It’s 2022 , I it’s time for people to acclimate to the times . Also, it’s way better to not have contaminates in the system from my brazing . Sure we can nitro braze but in smaller equipment that can easily get damaged by brazing , I’d much rather spend the money on a tool that would eliminate that problem. Great video , very well thought out .

I think that it’s more cost-effective to reuse some of the old pipes just because you won’t have to re-route things And redo the pipes.

And with the Zoom Lock you don't risk burning the building down. Do they have a rubber gasket or are they all metal?

Question: Why not press more connections? Is there something about pressing that is "inferior" to brazing? Or is the cost of fittings something to consider?

One cannot run from Technology, it is another tool. Cost effectiveness and viability, should be and are very pertinent considerations when looking into these type of of tools. In any case you should buy whatever tools save you time and money. That said, the jury is still out on how long the seals in these joints will last, as this is fairly new technology, so we will see. Outside of "burn Permits and special consideration, you will save so much and money time brazing your joints in my opinion and you will have the added peace of mind of knowing that if you did a great, even an ok job on your joints, they will last a lifetime. But hey...it is what it is.

A compelling argument in regards to the zoom locks. I don't own a zoom lock tool however to add to your argument there are already so many things that technicians are under-educated about; a vast number of topics. why complain it's dumbing down the industry when there already so many other micro details that need to be considered. plus as an owner the fear of one of my techs starting a fire is ever-present. I love your videos and I got my shirt in the mail and it's high quality and the graphic is attractive.

i have to admit that its a bit funny that "professionals" say sharkbite fittings are garbage because the oring will eventually fail...but introduce a special very expensive tool that crimps pipes with orings and its ok. To be clear im not a fan of sharkbite fittings but i feel these oring press fittings are in the same catagory. Obviously i know sharkbite fittings aren't going to be used on hvac but the principle is the same.

I totally agree any new technology must be tried an evaluated to see if the benefits are worthwhile. It in no way diminishes a person’s skills . Any thing that makes the trade easier and more efficient should be tried .

Nice video Chris. Regarding the annealing of the copper, I believe rapidly cooling after heating is not necessary. I think your confusing that with needing to quench other types of metals to specifically harden it.

Correct. Quenching is for Hardening the copper.

In actuality rapidly cooling off the pipe after annealing will weaken the copper. Basically causes thermal shock and micro fractures than later end up in a leak.

Just wondering but I did start using Viper Wet Rag, which I have used on a few service valves (mostly residential). But I notice they still get pretty hot, to the point of burning yourself when touching even being fully encased in it. Is that normal? The valves arent discolored I just wanna make sure I am still saving the gaskets in the valves and not toasting them while making the valve look pretty. (Company runs acetylene only.)
