Had a air conditioning not working because the RTAA Trane chiller tripping on alarm. Well to see the alarm I had to first replace the air cooled chiller controller. This lead to a few repairs on the chilled water pumps and a very challenging ac service call. Enjoy hvac technician and chiller tech alike.

Great video. I’ve been a Trane tech for over 20 years and have started up and worked on hundreds of RTAA chillers. Those chillers are designed for 120% RLA. They won’t load up all the way in the summertime when the head pressures are the highest and the chiller is needed the most. Also, those chillers are designed for 4° superheat. Screws can take it and lower superheat keeps the motor cool. Superheat is higher after refrigerant vapor passes over motor and hits screws. I would put both those settings back to default.

Just came across your vids. I do commercial/industrial but don’t really work on any larger chillers. The interface seems similar to intellipaks which have a panel over them, that stupid how there’s no cover. Your videos have a lot of great info for someone not familiar with larger air and water cooled chillers

For the fuse, there's an old timer trick - use a incandescent light bulb. At low current the filament is low resistance and the system will have near line voltage. If there's a dead short, the bulb lights, but limits the current.

ahhhhh mannnnn. I've had one of them Trane Displays bad also.. service call on a Friday, 2pm for a Retirement home... maintenance men thought it was a great time to switch the system over from Heat to Cooling for the hot summer and didn't switch so they called me and Left the facility. :( I had a hell of a time checking out the display but luckily it was just a faulty valve damper holding out the Flow switch for a chiller... Its amazing how when some equipment is installed people neglect installing Gauges, taps, sight glasses, isolation valves, etc.... That BLUE MONSTER thread sealer is some nice stuff... great investigation work... nice video ! FYI look into a Silicone / Non Conductive Ring,... Very true on Making time for the family... I fail to do that from time to time... stay safe bud.

One thing to consider with AC coils is that they have shaded pole iron cores in them and will draw a lot more current if the movable pole piece attached to the contacts does not move when the coil is energized. Judging by that contactor that had its contacts off center, I would say what happened is the contacts could not move down when the coil was energized resulting in an over current condition on that coil that blew the fuse. Seen the same thing happen on AC powered solenoid valves. Seen people replace the coils and fuses and still blow the fuse, but the actual issue the whole time was a stuck spool in the solenoid valve causing the AC coil to over amp. DC coils don't have that issue if the spool gets stuck or contacts don't engage.

Its funny this problem seems everywhere, had happen on residential 24v humidifier solenoid, blew the 3A fuse to the entire furnace controls just because the spool stuck. What a way for a family to get cold due to some silly other issue unrelated to a heating system.

4:45 - When the return is split between the chiller and the boiler by a devertimg valve, this is considered a two pipe system. The chiller and boiler supplies are piped back to the building loop supply.

Trane created a brilliant flow switch. It had a tiny electric heater before the meter and one after the meter, It measured the resistance of the two elements. It lit LEDS to show you a percentage flow rate...... Commercial found out the cost per chiller was $300 and cancelled it. They then brought out a plastic paddle switch version which due to the design froze up during the winter.... You can't make it up!!!
