Oh man. You have no idea how helpful this was. I'm trying to spray a topper for my pickup and have tried 3 times to spray the thing. I have had literally every single problem you mentioned!!! I've been getting so frustrated cause I spent a lot of time doing prepwork and there is runs and splotches and the paint is expensive color matched auto paint...... I have a renewed sense of confidence and will get to setting up my spray gun(Properly this time) immediately. Thanks a bunch!!!

Thanks for this really informative and compressed video! I've had another really really frustrating problem, where the paint would come out in big blobs instead of a nice mist like expected. I've tried everything - air pressure lower/higher, fan adjustment tighter/bigger, adding thinner etc. but nothing would solve it. In the end, the small holes in the air cap on either side of the nozzle were plugged with old paint. After soaking in thinner and blowing out with 6 bars of compressed air, it works like a charm again. This wasn't mentioned in any of the troubleshooting videos, probably because it's so easy? So I'm leaving this here for others who might have the same problem... TL;DR when the gun doesn't work like it's supposed to, first thing is to really really clean it well including all the small holes.

Hi. Ever sprayed penetrol? Did it as a primer rust preventive but it was blowing back so much dust off the surface it wasn’t enjoyable at all. I normally use airless and have no over spray. I had it set at 36psi recommended for the gun lvmp. I’m thinking maybe being so watery I should try a lot lower psi and smaller fan?

Thanks Tom for another great video. My problem using the HF gun is that regardless of paint, viscosity, and adjusting until I'm ready to throw it in the garbage is that paint will not spray unless the fan adjustment is choked all the way down. I just can't get a wide spray.
@AlbeTurner7 жыл бұрын
I should add that's using either the 1.4 or the 1.8 with latex thinned 10%.
@imagineform7 жыл бұрын
Latex is really thick, even thinned 10% its a bit too think to come out of a 1.8 tip. I have a non harbor freight gun that has a 2.2 tip and that is even small for latex. If you are gonna be spraying latex your best bet would be an airless sprayer.
@AlbeTurner7 жыл бұрын
Thick it is for sure. I have and use an airless but overkill on small items such as stools, toy boxes, etc. I experimented with the latex and ended up with putting 8 ozs in my measuring cup and added 2.5 ounces on top. Thoroughly mixed it. Also, using a 3/32 bit in my drill press I bored out the 1.8 tip to approx 2.3. I was then able to successfully use the gun for the latex. Consistency was that of buttermilk more or less. I also found that by adding a regulator at the gun inlet I needed 80 lbs at the compressor to set the gun for 35-40 when spraying. Due no doubt to the 50' + of 3/8" hose I run from the compressor.
@AlbeTurner7 жыл бұрын
P.S. Now that I have a better handle on pressure at the gun, the bigger tip and the desired consistency range I'm going try thinning a bit less each time until I find that happy place. Hopefully in the 10-20% range.

Tom, I have a Home Depot Husky HVLP spray gun. I think I have the problem with vacuum as you stated in your video. The weird thing about opening the flip top cap on my gun is that the hole is the same size on the cap as the main lid. Should I drill the main lid hole bigger to allow more flow? I replaced the OEM nozzle with a 2.0mm and thinned my latex paint beyond the suggested max.
@imagineform2 жыл бұрын
HVLP gun are designed to spray water thin paints, like automotive types and stains. Latex is too thick on its own and needs to be thinned a lot for it to spray. If you are going to be spraying a lot of latex I would suggest an airless sprayer.

Great video, thanks! What would cause siphon HVLPs to stop spraying entirely? I have two HF cheapies yhat have crapped out on me despite being cleaned. Air comes out but no paint or solvent will come through. 2. Also noticing on my turbine that the fan pattern seems to be getting more narrow but the cap, tip and needle are CLEAN. ???
@imagineform5 ай бұрын
The siphon one could be clogged on the air intake causing a vacuum. I would double check the tip on the turbine gun, depending what you are spraying they can wear over time
@studioGEEZ5 ай бұрын
@imagineform fixed the turbine gun. Seemed to be a clog where the makeup air enters the siphon cup. Sprays well now. On my other hvlp guns that are not spraying anything but air, would air still come out the cap if this was the case (clogged at air intake)? The air hole on the cup is not clogged. The gun has only been used a handful of times, once with auto primer and base, and the rest of the time solvent based acrylic lacquer so I don't think wear is the issue. You're probably right about a clog but i dont know where to look. The parts diagram calls the "air intake" the fitting where my pneumatic hose connects (not talking about my turbine hvlp, just the Harbor Freight cheapies I hook up to a small compressor.) I'm guessing the air intake your talking about is something else. Thx.

I bought a Husky HVLP gun and hooked it up to my compressor. The compressor is putting out quite a bit, but the gun does nothing. It seems as if a passage is blocked, but I can't figure out why, and nothing on Google was relevant. I also tried to blow through it to see if there's any passage of air, and it feels completely plugged up. It doesn't seem to be full of lube like a lot of the brands are said to be, but even if it does need a cleaning I should get SOMETHING shouldn't I? Since the manual doesn't go into any detail on this I'm wondering if it's a simple setting I'm doing wrong...but I don't think so. Any ideas Tom, or anyone else?

Make sure all the adjustment screws are backed out some and you should definitely be able to blow air thru with the trigger depressed. Some guns have an adjustment knob right near the air inlet that can completely shutdown the air.

So you can try less fan but it is most likely the cause of a cheap or poorly made gun. The little side holes in the air cap are blowing too much air or are blowing the wrong direction. This is the one place a pricy gun can win out.

Sometimes if the needle doesn’t seal perfect then a little paint can leak out the nozzle and get between the air cap and the nozzle, then when you spray it comes out. I have also had water born paints build up a little on the nozzle and then fly off. Hope that helps

Two things to try, turn in the big knob so the trigger can’t pull back all the way. Lower your air pressure. Other things are a smaller nozzle and more fan air.

I have two Huskys sprayers and now one of them won't send air threw the gun when spraying. What's going on? Its my 3rd time using it and I took it all apart and cleaned it very well but air won't shoot through anymore.

Hello, I have a husky hvlp sprayer rated at 40 psi and I'm trying to spray primer on a work piece and it isn't really coming out. My volume knob is open almost all the way. The rating on the primer is not to thin. I'm using a 1.8mm tip I have no issues when I use my finish paint at 1.8mm tip, 40 psi, is there something I'm doing wrong with the primer?
@imagineform2 жыл бұрын
I would try to thin it a bit. It sounds like it’s too thick

The problem that I am having is when I am spraying, the material will start to bubble inside of the cup attached to the gun and sometimes spit out of the top. I don’t know if this matters but I spray an epoxy (TNEMEC) not regular paint. I also have issues with the primer but it is also about twice as thick as the top coats. I mix and thin everything to recommended specifications
@imagineform3 жыл бұрын
I spray a lot of tnemec, I use a 2.2 tip for the primer. I think your problem is a leak In Your air tip, make sure it is tight and if there is a seal it’s in good condition
@afweldingllc3 жыл бұрын
@@imagineform thanks for the reply. Glad you’re familiar with tnemec too lol. I had a feeling it was the tip size for the primer.

@@imagineform I use the cheap purple HF spray gun. When I’m done I usually trade it in for a new one with my warranty. Each gun only costs about $4 that way. Would drilling the hole to 2mm work? Cause I can’t change tip size on those.
@imagineform3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I moved to the auto set that comes with 2 guns, it’s more expensive but a way better setup that lasts way longer. When I spray the zinc primer I use my develbis gun. Not sure if drilling it out would work, I don’t think you would get a very good spray pattern, but for the cost of the gun it’s probably worth a try

Hi Tom, thank you for the video. Will this gun work for the latex paint?
@imagineform6 жыл бұрын
Not great, You will want a minimum of a 2.2 tip. An airless sprayer will work better, like the graco from Home Depot

I'm getting condensing on my tip. Any suggestions on how to prevent that. 2. I'm spraying primer what would you suggest setting the pressure at on both my compressor and then the pressure control on my gun? Thanks
@imagineform2 жыл бұрын
Some primers do tend to build up on the tip. Lowering your fan can help but isn’t alway feasible. I will normally just keep a small container of solvent with a brush in it and clean the tip ever couple minutes.

Perfect thank you. That worked.

Spraying general finishes exterior 450 in real hot and humid weather the finish kept plugging up the tip of the gun. I did filter the paint first ... I would stop and clean the gun ... it it would work for a wile then plug up again ... I tried thinning the finish with water (water based finish) that helped but then did not get good coverage on the project. Oh I was spraying outdoors .... in the sun ... I have found that General Finishes makes a product called Enduro Extender for Water based finishes it increases the drying time I am going to try that next time Now not sure what the settings on the gun were but could it be not enough paint and to much air? Please help
@imagineform6 жыл бұрын
Yes, too much air can do that, and an extender will definitely help. I have a couple water base finishes that do the same no mater what. What I do is keep a stiff bristled toothbrush near me in a cup of water and every couple minutes scrub the tip of the gun, this keeps it from building up and getting too dry. Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi . I have air bubbling up from the gun , in to the reservoir, whenever I pull the trigger to paint .... is that normal ? I have really patchy paint (basically it’s not working! ) too , I suspect they are connected ....??? Thanks
@imagineform5 жыл бұрын
Depends on the gun, but it sounds like your tip isn’t sealing to the body of the gun and air pushing back into the gun. Check to make sure the nozzle is tight and if there are any o rings make sure they are in good shape and in place

Hi I use the Wagner flexio 5000 and have been getting small bubbles in the dry paint. How can I correct that? Thanks
@imagineform Жыл бұрын
Sometimes if the second coat is too soon or too wet the first coat can off gas and create small bubbles. Better timing and a little more thinner can help

Hiya We have a gun that won't put out enough paint. It was fine when new and it's been cleaned every time. It's a few years old now. The pattern is wrong and the paint comes out too slow. Does the gun need replacing? Nothing is blocking the flow between the needle and the cup. The 1.6 needle looks okay. Any advise greatly appreciated. Thanks
@imagineform2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes you can get a build up of paint in the nozzle even if it’s cleaned often. One way to check is if you have a 1.6 mm drill bit and see if it slides though, don’t force it though , you don’t want to scratch it. The other thing to check is that the vent in the cap is open.
@MarshallRoad2 жыл бұрын
@@imagineform Thanks, we'll give that a try
@MarshallRoad2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom Unfortunately that wasn't it. A 1.5mm bit is a loose fit. We've got an old 1.3 gun that puts more paint on the same airline, so it must be the gun. The cup is new, so it's got air displacing the paint. Thanks for the help

My paint gun fan isn’t wide. It only comes out mainly on top. Like the bottom won’t spray. Pretty much instead of a footballish pattern, it’s half the pattern which only the top comes out.
@imagineform7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have some dry paint between your air cap and nozzle. Can happen if you don’t have a perfect seal at you needle tip.

Hey Tom, I have watched this video a few times now and it is great! I am having issues with a rough surface when done painting. I see other comments alluding to the same problem but am not quite sure what the solution is. The gun will act fine the first few minutes and then start a rough intermittent spray, requiring me to sand and try again. What is going on?
@imagineform4 жыл бұрын
What type of paint are you spraying? Check the tip and see if there is paint drying on there, with some paints I will keep a jar of solvent and a brush to clean the tip every few minutes.

I actually have 2.. but not sure if they're normal.. or what.. but one is.. when I fill the gun full of paint, it seems to run out really fast - like I can paint a quarter panel and a trunk lid and have to refill it already problem 2.. is I noticed when using this straight black paint; the paint coming out seems spotty*/specks and leaves little risen dots on the paint surface..

Sounds like you need a smaller tip. Try going down a size if you can. Or try to up the pressure a little and turn down the paint volume a little.

So have you ever tested the electric guns. Ie the Wagner one around $135 (Canadian) I feel it’ll be way easier but wonder if they’re a lot ‘worse’ for painting furniture etc. Or maybe the car….if he’ll let me @ it. 😀

Yes I have used that gun. They are way better for spraying thicker paints like latex or tractor enamel. The hvlp gun are better for thin paints like automotive urethanes and thin stains.
