Tom, thanks, i’m a woodworker just starting hvlp finishing. if you are planning more videos would you consider one on proper thinning of different finishes especially as it relates to woodworking and the different gun tips required.

Hi Tom, I have watched and re-watched your videos. Expertly done. I am a complete novice. Never sprayed before. I hope you can help me with a persistent problem, orange peel. In this video, you briefly mention to spray over it while it is still wet. My second coat didn't help much. The orange peel was still present but much less so. From the start, I diluted my black lacquer with 100mL of lacquer thinner to about 900mL of paint (11%) and filtered the paint as I pour it into the collapsible cup. I also added a filter lid. I have adjusted the fan and a wider fan seems to work better. I have the air pressure turned up to about 50psi after seeing that lower pressures seemed worse. I am not sure how to quantify the flowrate except that it seems to be on the higher side. When I tried lower flowrates, the surface looked more like a sandy beach, even when sprayed over it during the same coating. IOW, I didn't wait for it to dry then apply a second coat. The gun has no adjustment for air flow. My predecessor used the same gun with excellent results. Thank you, Rick

This is one of the hardest things, sounds like you are on the right track. Orange peel is normally caused by the paint not having time to flow out completely, so you need it to stay wet longer. This can be achieved by,1. Wetter coats, 2. More or less thinner, 3. A slower/warmer temp thinner 4. Cooler booth temps. Like I said, orange peel is hard and almost always present. Most of the time when I know I need a glass finish I know I’m gonna be wet sanding and polishing. Hope this helps! Good luck

Great stuff Tom! As an oil base airless painter I've seen and exchanged some of these tricks with fellow painters but having them all condensed like this makes me excited to get back into the game. This time I'll be playing with an HVLP on cabinets and furniture. Totally new process for me to only have a dinky little cup of material! Please do more of these. In particular, mixing and materials. There's a whole universe of product out there and I think it would be interesting to run through the gamut of them

Tom Stringham Thanks so much for the really Great tips Tom!. This commenter and another asked if you would share your expertise regarding mixing and proper techniques for us woodworkers. If you already did one I missed it so perhaps you have a link to it? I usually like to wipe on my finishes but those nooks and crannies might better be finished with a spray gun. I have seen your great videos about the HF pro gun, using and cleaning, but I would think the little touch sprayer HF sells might be better (and cheaper for me). Do you have one, what do you think of it and would you recommend it for woodworking? Thank you again!

Hello Tom. I wanted to ask, in 0:43 you refer to a cause of an orange peel problem. You say you've got "too light of paint"? Do you mean the paint is too thin? Or what does it mean exactly? Thanks for your great and helpful videos.
@imagineform
@imagineform 5 жыл бұрын
Correct, too thin/not enough paint. What happens is, if the paint is too thin it will dry before it has a chance to flow out properly.

I got mini fisheyes...I just ultrafine sanded to the point where basecoat is exposing the sealer. I'll wipe with thinner and reapply base coat in light coats. Yes?

Correct, you may want to put a filter in your airline, might be coming form oil from your compressor

Well I just tried to repaint the hood of the car with primer, base coat and clear coat but there is a lot of bugs and dust trapped here. Would you recommend waiting 24h for the clear coat to cure then wetsanding with a 2000 grit?
@imagineform
@imagineform 5 жыл бұрын
My suggestion would be to sand it with 600 lightly, then apply another cost of clear, if you then need to use 2000 and buff

Hey mate I've got a drama with getting a over spray line either end of my fan pattern.. Played with the set up and nothing really changes it. It's always there leaving a tiger stripe.. I've tried 50% over lap even 75 and nearly got a run but it's still blowing dry paint and leaving a line. Is it gun set up or could it be something else?
@imagineform
@imagineform 6 жыл бұрын
This is one of the things that will happen less with higher end guns. But check that the fan air holes are really clean and not mucked up. You can also try opening your paint volume up some more. Also turn down the fan all the way and just back it off a little until you get the width you want.

@@imagineform thanks mate, I haven't been able to get a pattern out of it but I'll try again... It's only acrylic, could the paint need more or a better thinner? Other than that it was a cheap gun might just be rubbish.

I have a question I am new to painting a car, I have been getting specs of like what looks like sand in my paint jobs. I tried wet sanding it out but when I paint over it I only get a creator in the spot. do you know what is causing this?
@imagineform
@imagineform 6 жыл бұрын
It could be a lot of things, most contaminants come from the thing you are spraying, so make sure its really clean, event the parts you arn't painting. it sounds like what ever the specks are the are oily, thats why they are causing the craters. So after sanding wipe down with a solvent to remove any oil. if that doesn't work doing a few really light coats and letting them flash over can cover up those dimples. then a heavier coat to smooth things out. This contaminate could also be coming from your compressor or lines, a last chance filter at the gun air inlet will solve this. amzn.to/2Nu5Ev3 (affiliate link)
