Tom, I am confused…. Am I suppose to leave the cap open or closed on the paint container when I am spraying?
@imagineform2 ай бұрын
You can leave it on, but there should be a vent to let air in, this needs to be open and clean.

I'm a muralist usually working with very large brushes. I am transitioning to more abstract and using this HVLP gravity feed sprayer is going to make my work much easier. I have been searching how to do a soft splatter, but never understood the workings of the gun and pressure. With your easy to understand video now I think I can do this. Thank you again for your help, and if I get this abstract job I'll send you a picture. Even if I don't, I will continue refining my spray tech. to achieve the final result.

I'm sorry guy, you explained it wrong. Paint doesn't mix inside the gun. It mixes in the air. You pull the trigger and Paint comes out the needle hole. It does use some air to force the paint out, but for the most part; the paint coming out is not atomized. The other holes along with your air horns causing atomization. You have air blowing straight; from the left and right side of the gun towards the middle. Which meets and pushes into the fan pattern.

if i want to set 70 to 80 PSI with air compressor tank, then set 2.5 to 30 PSI air regular pressure if i keep running so long for spray or do i have to wait 30 sec then waiting fill up air or ? just want to make sure. thanks
@imagineform2 ай бұрын
You only need to wait if the pressure at you gun drops below where you want it

I am just learning how to use these tools. I also wanted to ask what the minimum air compressor needed is and if a tankless compressor is able to be used. I want to paint small projects which are about 1-2ft cube. Also, what types of paints can be used? What are the smallest compressors that can be used and are tankless compressors able to be used?

Check out my video on compressors. As far as paints go they need to be pretty thin. Like stain or automotive paints

Excellent summary. I wondered if this was the case and you answered perfectly. p.s. I have no idea why people are complaining about the volume. It is perfectly adequate as far as I am concerned even with my volume on low. People are strange though.

I have the same gun, after putting down the primer and base and cleaning the gun with acetone in between applications I noticed it dripping from the trigger onto my hand when applying the clear. I had accidently pulled out some little rubber washers from where the needle goes in with my small bristle brush. Do you know where I can buy these to replace them, I may have lost one, as it still drips even after tightening the screw down hard.

Great video, thanks! What would cause siphon HVLPs to stop spraying entirely? I have two HF cheapies yhat have crapped out on me despite being cleaned. Air comes out but no paint or solvent will come through. 2. Also noticing on my turbine that the fan pattern seems to be getting more narrow but the cap, tip and needle are CLEAN. ???
@imagineform5 ай бұрын
The siphon one could be clogged on the air intake causing a vacuum. I would double check the tip on the turbine gun, depending what you are spraying they can wear over time
@studioGEEZ5 ай бұрын
@imagineform fixed the turbine gun. Seemed to be a clog where the makeup air enters the siphon cup. Sprays well now. On my other hvlp guns that are not spraying anything but air, would air still come out the cap if this was the case (clogged at air intake)? The air hole on the cup is not clogged. The gun has only been used a handful of times, once with auto primer and base, and the rest of the time solvent based acrylic lacquer so I don't think wear is the issue. You're probably right about a clog but i dont know where to look. The parts diagram calls the "air intake" the fitting where my pneumatic hose connects (not talking about my turbine hvlp, just the Harbor Freight cheapies I hook up to a small compressor.) I'm guessing the air intake your talking about is something else. Thx.

Hi, if your spraying water based fence paints does anyone know if you need to thin them down first? And can you use water to thin it?
@imagineform4 ай бұрын
Water based coatings can be thinned with water or sometimes isopropyl alcohol. Usually no more than 10%

3:28 Is there a way of calculating that 45 second run time using maths? Boyle's law states that "as the pressure on a gas increases, the volume of the gas decreases because the gas particles are forced closer together. Conversely, as the pressure on a gas decreases, the gas volume increases because the gas particles can now move farther apart." P1V1 = P2V2 Which means that as you start spraying, and the pressure in the tank starts to drop, you gain volume which helps you sustain the spray. It's a dynamic situation which makes the static equation above challenging to apply.
@Hereford16424 ай бұрын
You are misunderstanding Boyle's law. PV is a constant only for a closed system. For example a bicycle pump with your finger over the end to stop air escaping. Then, as you push the pump in the volume of the air in the pump decreases and the pressure increases. If you then release the pump the volume of the air in the pump increases and the pressure decreases. In the case of the air compressor tank feeding a spray gun it is not a closed system. Air is being lost as the spray gun is being used. There is no 'gain in volume' as the pressure in the tank drops. The consequence of this is that if the spray gun is using air at a constant rate then the pressure in the compressor tank will drop in a linear fashion (if we ignore the compressor kicking in to try and replace air when the pressure drops sufficiently).

Thanks for this really informative and compressed video! I've had another really really frustrating problem, where the paint would come out in big blobs instead of a nice mist like expected. I've tried everything - air pressure lower/higher, fan adjustment tighter/bigger, adding thinner etc. but nothing would solve it. In the end, the small holes in the air cap on either side of the nozzle were plugged with old paint. After soaking in thinner and blowing out with 6 bars of compressed air, it works like a charm again. This wasn't mentioned in any of the troubleshooting videos, probably because it's so easy? So I'm leaving this here for others who might have the same problem... TL;DR when the gun doesn't work like it's supposed to, first thing is to really really clean it well including all the small holes.

Hey Tom you nailed my problem with your video. My vent was totally clogged . It looked clean till I push a wire through it and a coil of paint came out.
