*-How can the old Hyakkimaru speak?* Both Hyakkimaru have extrasensory perception, what means they perceive information without using the physical senses, it's just that in both it works differently (with some exceptions, like the fact both can "see" without eyes). The original Hyakkimaru doesn't speak, you could say that he talks telepathically and to pretend he's actually speaking he just moves his lips. As far as I remember, this is explained in a different way in the manga xD but that's pretty much it Anyway, I've seen a few comments saying that the new Hyakkimaru doesn't have emotions. Sadness and anger are emotions too, besides he doesn't need to smile to feel happiness, he's just an inexpresive guy for now

The 2019 one is more deep and has more feeling to it cause he couldnt talk in it and His rage felt more real, also his first word was mio so it makes the scene even better
The 2019 added more storyline and did a great job of making us sympatize the main characters Mio included, while the 1969's version felt like despair and depicted grief instead of rage. The 1969 scene was a bit more scary than the 2019 scene (probably because of the music and it's dark themes) It was a tad more darker than 2019 tbh, but I think both years did a really good job.

I think the thing is that 1969 didn't have animation techniques and easy-of-use as today does. Technological and the overall evolution of anime as an art medium allowed Dororo to get the few bits of edge it was lacking in its original incarnations. I literally got into the franchise today with the remake, but I have mad respect for Tezuka's work, knowing how influential he is as a mangaka. Besides overall new insights in how the story is pulled off - such as making Hyakkimaru completely unaware to the world outside him save for a special vision. It allows for adding in tidbits of character development through metaphors conveyed by his physical improvement, which I find simply genius. Totally hyped to see what the show has in its sleeve for me.

Dororo is a pioneer in the youkai genre and Japanese anime in general, and it just makes me really happy to see interest in this wonderful series revived in the wake of the incredibly well made 2019 version :3 the first adaptation is very much a swashbuckling samurai adventure with demons whereas the remake is a grim representation of humanity, emotions and the actual horrors of the Sengoku era. For those who don't know, Tezuka had to change a lot of things about Dororo in the 60s because people thought it was too dark for its intended audience (young-preteen boys), but the 2019 adaptation clearly was allowed a bit more freedom on that front, because anime isn't just made for kids anymore, and thus was able to bring back some of those darker scenes and show them on screen which just make it amazing and way more appealing to a modern audience. I'm actually writing an essay about this series currently for my Japanese Literature and Arts course and how it's changed over 50 years~

This scene is the perfect example of why I like the 2019 version better, it portrays hyakkimaru more animalistic than human because he was robbed of most experience that would make him human, his brain also works more like an animal as well “kill red get body back” as he doesn’t know more because he didn’t have the means to understand.

The old version's scenes were all about the atmosphere. This one is a good example

I like that even though Hyakkimaru doesn't say a word and simply roars with rage as if he'd become a beast made a much bigger impact on me than all the questioning and flashbacks he did in the 1969 version and when he finally did speak only to say Mio's name, it broke my heart. Really. :'(

Explanation as to why Hyakki can talk in the old one, basically, Jukai taught him how to speak with his stomach. It’s like a weird combination of how it moves, and growls, I read the og manga years a go so I don’t remember the specifics, but the demons didn’t take his stomach so yeah. Plus, in the old one, Mio was from his backstory, we never actually got to meet her personally in the original version.

Both great moments. For me while I think the emotion is a bit stronger in the original (between the change in style and some story changes to alter its impact) there is something truly beautiful in Hyakkimaru’s rage during the original. Particularly the music and the cuts, especially the part where Mio’s image is sliced up.

I never watched the old version but the new one is so impactful. Hyakkimaru is experiencing all this new things; touch, physical pain, hearing, his voice. He's never really interacted with people other than the man who raised him and Dororo. So to see this pure uncontrolled reaction, after feeling that tender care of a human like mio, that raw grief and rage is so much more powerful... This whole anime!!!

Man, that moment when I heard Dororo screamed seeing Mio dying and Hyyakimaru’s reaction of seeing Mio’s soul slowly fading heat me really hard, I cried a bit. And all that raging ughhh... 😭😭😭 liked the new one

Good god they're not even remotely the same guy... I like the new hyaku better as a character, and as a concept. But they're so damn different. Like I see people comparing them and honestly you just can't.

"Dororo Screech fits with everything " . im just waiting for a video like that
The new version of this scene is far more thematic, and also flows far better story-wise.

the song for the 1969 version is haunting.... i think if the 2019 version had given a few more episodes for mio and hyakkimaru to fall in love and draw out their relationship more, the death scene could've had that kind of music and dramatic imagery that the 1969 had. but i think the 2019 didn't have music because they wanted to highlight hyakkimaru's screams... ahhh so sad

I really like how in the 2019 version they make the actions of hyakkimaru realistic with the fact of him not being able to smell see and feel while in the 1969 version when he is looking for mio he looks like he can see and hear everything good job 2019 and also 1969 for being the OG

2:43 in the 2019 version you can see hyakkimaru's face reflected in the blade. I had to slow the video down to .25 playback speed and even then pause and unpause quickly in order to catch it. It's seriously a blink a you'll miss it detail but damn it's awesome
