Hybrid FPV Cinelifter - 'HORIZON' Behind The Scenes // Panasonic BS1H, Atomos Ninja V

This is the drone section from the Behind The Scenes & Breakdown of the latest Rowe Films short film 'Horizon', which Tom produced in collaboration with Atomos & LUMIX.
Great to hear Tommy's perspective on Hybrid FPV, allowing him to use the BS1H and Ninja V in the air as well as on the ground.
We were seriously hindered by a poor video downlink as we didn't use the Vaxis 3000 that we normally run on the hybrid drones. This limited our shot options but credit to Tom and Chris who managed to frame and focus some beautiful footage through the latency and breakup.

This is so cool. Maybe we can also take those huge Agro DJI Drones and customise them to shoot with probably a bigger camera like SONY Burano with an Angenieux zoom lens. Zooming in from the skies. it would look like those helicopter shots.

you've taken the FPV platform and morphed it into an Inspire 2.

Sort of : ) You can fly this with much lower latency and with much more precision/closer proximity. Also it allows a DP to use their ground camera and glass in the air. Horses for courses! The Inspire would be a better choice for some shots and vice versa.

Nice job guys. We’re can I find info on how to setup the rs2 with a transmitter and all the other technical stuff? What mounting and power setup do you use? What’s the range of the nucleus?

The Nucleus nano range is pretty poor - the M is better. RS2 you can use any sbus rc controller. The Siccario build and tune took a huge amount of work. I also have a Swol now for faster applications.

Great setup, would love to fly something like this myself. Am curious to know what flight firmware you chose for it, Betaflgiht for the flight dynamics, or Inav so you can have a panic button or was it something else?

Thanks! I use iNav for everything these days, even my smaller drones. I don't believe there is a huge performance difference between the two, you just need to be comfortable adjusting the settings. Having said that I don't think a panic button would be much help in a lot of situations. It's good to have the option of RTH or baro controlled landing though.

I think panic button was probably the wrong term (iNav noob) I know a few people who use position hold for occasions where say your goggle battery is low, or something enters your airspace, being able to just let it hover on its own while you sort your stuff out sounds kinda handy, espcially when its something so expensive. I will be moving over to iNav on my 7 inch for that exact reason after having someone plug in on the same frequency causing my video signal to lock up and resulted in an expensive crash :D

Amazing stuff man - some gold nuggets! You should make a video about different camera lens setups for cinelifters. Surely the questions about global shutters are substantiaI, but I have noooo clue why everyone has sworn to the Laowa 7.5mm??

thanks Luis! I have been planning that video for a while : ) When the camera is hard mounted to the drone tighter lenses look far too rushed, everything is speeding past too much for the footage to be nice to watch. 7.5 gives a nice perspective on MFT and allows some room for stabilisation! 7.5 on MFT is wide but it isn't as wide as it sounds if you are thinking of a 35mm sensor.

Hey again Alex - new question - what was your experience with the remote focus control, what brand was your choice and how did you connect it to the gimbal? I already have my rx setup to Sbus on the Dji focus wheel controlling the pan/tilt/roll so how do I connect the remote focus control system? From my understanding you would have to connect the focus control to Can bus, right? :)

Very impressive, great job. Bgh1 is a great camera, integrating the RS2 is awesome... But to be honest the shots aren't very crazy, I guess there are more limitations than with an inspire with FPV mod.

​@@mcronfpv8736 The aim here was to get some aerial shots for Tommy with his BS1H and Ninja - no BGH1 in sight. The Inspire is a great tool and would be a better choice for some shots but has nowhere near the precision of this setup and obviously it can't carry the required camera.. horses for courses. If you would like to see hybrid footage where we are pushing the limits then you will have to wait for the feature film we used this setup on to come out : ) I have no interest in proving you wrong, completing this response has used up all the effort I feel like putting into this interaction. Footage looks awesome and with such a setup we want to see it fly super fast, but I know the first test flights are not what it is about :-) I actually landed on your video because I'm wanting to do the same thing and was wondering about the actual limits of the RS2... If you go crazy on the flying, RS2 hits it's angle limits and I'm afraid it will act crazy and make the flight super hard. I had questions about how you power the whole thing, and how to use crossfire via s-bus to control the RS2 but we didn't start on the right foot :-)) i will look more carefully at your video and do so experiments on my side. Anyway I'm stoked to see you are happy with this setup and used it on a feature film !

It's running 6s, the build and tune have to be perfect, it's a big ask! I have a 12s Swol for faster stuff

These shots were awesome angles to get. What an incredible setup. I think that setup is the best for a team of creators. Have you used SteadXP for your Siccario setup?

Thanks! I don't use steadXP on the Cinelifters as it is a big hassle trying to use it with productions. They need to be able to take the card and ingest/secure format on set. All my conventional FPV systems are tuned as smooth as possible so they can use the raw footage and stabilise a little bit in post if needed.

None of the drone footage looks like 4K or more and there is so much glare, is that an autofocus issue with vibrations causing the resolution to go down the pipe? Most sub 2000$ off the shelf drones would have handled that better. Sure it is noble to experiment with this and it may be the future if refined properly, but this first result could have been taken with a 500$ drone, only that would be so light that it would not ruin the images by giving you a view off a leaf blower.

not really.. this goes faster, is way more nimble, has full power redundancy and gps failsafes. There are loads of shots you can get with this that you can't get with an alta and vice versa. This has already been put to use on a couple of feature films and it went down really well. We have access to several Alta platforms.. horses for courses.
