Brightstorm don't get full of yourself. The video was mediocre as hell. Your tripping over ur own words. Are you making a rap video or a chemistry video? Get off the internet and come back when u learn how to teach. If u need inspiration go watch Tyler Dewitt. The best and only decent chemistry youtuber.

Nice explained. No need to breathe, I am far, far away from native English and I understood all of it. Usually those professors who gave me a lot of knowledge did the right thing - explained it well and told me as much as they could... In that way you get used to do more things or have deeper discussion about the topics for a shorter time. Thank you very much! For those who do not understand well, I think there is always some literature on-line and/or open course and one of the most common languages is a must-have, whatever that you are studying, as well as a good book. Grown-ups must be independent and capable to solve problems by themselves at the university, at work... I am so grateful to the people who just want to help like this professor is.

Unless you're a machine like the closed captioning feature that mis-transcribes as ammonia as "somalia" and other hilarious tripups, her manner of speaking is just fine. A complete 180 from my chem teacher who is booooring and talks tooooo slow. She on the other hand is clear, interesting, and fast. Thank you! These tutorials are a lifesaver!

This was amazing. First video that really talked about why denoting hybridization is necessary and went into more detail about the theory behind hybridization. The speed was fine for me; I had to rewind twice during the video but this is so much better than sitting through a 20 minute video and having to skip around constantly for them to get to the point. The speaker seemed well prepared. Thanks for the great upload!

+Nyanna Ross I've already changed degrees haha. I did some reading and actually spent time on this and I think I finally understand it. It is soo confusing though. You really have to take your time to understand where all the electrons are and then what orbitals hybridise, and then what shape the hybridised orbitals are and then try and relate that to the bond shapes. Thankfully I understand all of it now haha

All you have to do is count the number of lone pair e- and the # of atoms that are bonded to the central atom and then count them! You can see it in the first example, CCl4, Carbon is bonded to four Chlorine atoms so you count to four! sp3. Another example would be PCl5, it has five bonds and no lone pairs, so sp3d. It isn't necessary to do what she did!
@20yrsofgreatness
@20yrsofgreatness 11 жыл бұрын
She actually explains it (kinda) in her video. It has to do with the spin quantum number. I'm not a chemist, but as far as I know the highest you can go is up to sp3d5.

***** Remember that the orbital s only has 1 slot, orbital p has 3 slots, orbital d has 5 slots, and orbital f has 7 slots. Each slot CAN contain up to two electron, and up and a down arrow. For hybridization though, we want each orbital slot to only contain the up arrow. So for p, which has 3 slots, we can only go up to p3. After that we have to go to d.

For anyone wondering, in the carbon tetrachloride example, carbon normally has 2 electrons in the 2p orbital, but when preparing to form a bond with another atom it becomes excited and an electron from the 2s orbital jumps up to the 2p. So now we have 2s^1 and 2p^3, which is why the hybridized result is sp^3!

I dont't understand the concept at all but form this video, I figured out how to determine the hybrid orbital by looking at a Lewis dot structure: If there are 2 things (pair of electrons or any bond) around the atom, its sp. If there are 3 things, its sp2. If there are 4 things, its sp3. If there are 5 things, its dsp3. If there are 6 things, its d2sp3. That's I really need to know for the test I will have soon and this helped immensely. Thanks!

at 4:11 in the video, she says she is going to "save" two of the P orbitals....but does not explain why? or why she is hybridizing one S and one P (???)

Wow that was really well done! I was skeptical at first since it was a shorter video but you answered questions I didn't even know I had!

SLOOOOOW DOWN! I understand this concept already, so I could (barely) follow along. If I were trying to learn this concept for the first time, however, I would have stopped the video about 10 seconds into it. Sure, I can pause, rewind, etc., but that takes more time and energy than finding a superior video in the first place ... they're just a click away.

Whats with the horrible comments? Don't watch her videos if you don't like her. My exam is in a few hours and I find her videos very helpful.
