We've had both incredible success and disappointing fails with our hydrangeas, and we're not afraid to share what we've learned.
Watch to learn more... and to reveal our HYDRANGEA FAIL.
We can recommend 10 to 25 gallon grow bags, consistent watering, spraying for deer early in the season, regular fertilizing with the RIGHT kind of food, and late fall pruning (or very early spring).
10+ gallon Grow Bag by Smart Potz (bigger is usually better, but smaller is easier to manage)
You can bury the bag or mound them with mulch
Consistent moisture
Plant Skydd Deer Repellant
Sluggo Plus for snails, slugs, and earwigs
Fertilize monthly in May, June, July, and sometimes August - make sure it has a bloom-boosting, time-release fertilizer

A grow bag may also be good for renters. I don't rent but can see that being something handy for someone who rents their home

What grow bag brand do you prefer for your hydrangeas? What brand for the hydrangea food? Thank you for sharing this video. I have an area I wanted to put a limelight hydrangea but the clay soil was not ideal. I will definitely try with a grow bag!

We've been using Smart Potz, but there are other brands... Bloom makes some very attractive ones in various colors. For fertilizer, we mix our own combination of time-release and instant-feed fertilizers. We found with our panicle hydrangeas, that if you only do one fertilizer, use a time-release that emphasizes it is bloom-boosting -- apply when leaves first appear in the spring, then reapply 30 and 60 days after the initial feeding (we often give another dose after 90 days too). Apply around the "drip-line" which is the area under the branches (you don't have to put the fertilizer very close to the trunk).

Either a 14-14-14 Osmocote (or another variety with a higher middle number) + 14-14-14 Woodace for instant-release.

Wow your strawberry Sunday looks amazing. I have vanilla strawberry standard but it does not turn pink, just white then turn brown. I am in zone 7A in NY full sun and plenty of water, in my garden 1 year (5gallons). Any tips would be really appreciate? Love your videos, can’t wait for the next one.

Sometimes they don't turn as pink depending on conditions... especially with some of the younger plants. That Strawberry Sundae was in it's second season in the grow bag, so it was comfortable in there. We are lucky in Michigan because many of the most popular panicle hydrangeas are developed here and we have three ideal climate for them. We are very diligent with monthly time-release fertilizer May-early August (that kind of fertilizer degrades fast when the temperature is high). Hopefully, you'll get the whole range of color next year 👍
@UpNorthGardenMI
@UpNorthGardenMI 2 жыл бұрын
Should also note that the color change is mostly dependent on nighttime temperatures (best color when nights get below 70 degrees) and a decent amount of water. If they're turning brown quickly, a little more water might be just the thing.

Those Hydrangeas are just so lovely! What size grow bags do you use? I just ordered the 10 gallon bag and was contemplating whether the 20gallons would be better.

Do you have any recommendations on how to plant a very very small hydrangea? I bought a couple of the little tiny Court pot hydrangeas from proven winners and they're no more than three inches tall some of them are just a stick and I'm not sure how to go about putting them in the ground.
@truthofthematter9409
@truthofthematter9409 2 жыл бұрын
I personally would do them just like i would any size of hydrangea. Plant them where they get plenty of sunshine if they're panicle hydrangeas and keep them watered often but never soggy soil. i bought 2 bare root that had no leaves or stems and put them straight in the ground and really gave them no special treatment besides watered plenty. I"ve also rooted many cuttings and did the same at the end of summer... planted them and kept them watered. Good luck

Why do you put hydrangea in so much sun? They can be perfectly happy anywhere with part sun and you can cut back a lot on water. This beautiful sunny place can be used for so many other sun loving plants. Just a suggestion.

In our area, panicle hydrangeas get the biggest and most abundant blooms in full sun… and for us, there are few flowering shrubs with blooms that last as long as hydrangeas… so they’re a favorite choice for full sun.
